Summary
Ambition, the desire to be better than you are, is only ever as good as its cause. Motivated by pride, selfishly seeking power for one's own personal gain is a dangerous game considered evil more often than it's considered good. But it isn't inherently evil. After all, if you're at the bottom, where else do you have to go but up? And why should you help those that pushed you down there on your climb up?
Dillion Lux had just wanted to expand his skills, to learn something not often mastered. There was no ulterior intent beyond a desire to learn for his own personal gain. But, apparently, even just studying the dark arts tainted him. In a second, after one small slip up, Dillion Lux lost everything.
Tom Riddle has always had nothing. The only thing that's ever been his is his own power, the one that kept him safe when he had to defend himself against the muggle bullies. So it should be reasonable that he would want to grow it, that he would want to have it all. But it is not.
The Dark Arts aren't inherently evil, just as Tom and Dillion aren't. But it's hard to remember that when everyone around them seems to think the opposite.

Harry Potter seeks meaning when his life ends far too soon and he is reborn in the past as the daughter of Walburga and Orion Black. He has big goals for changes he wants to achieve in the wizarding world but it is easier said than done when your mind rebels against being in a girl's body and your body rebels against the terrifying parents you are being brought up by.
Harry had always thought being an orphan was the worst fate he could have had but after having Sirius' parents as his own, he can now safely say that he would much prefer to be an orphan again, thank you very much!

When school starts back up again, however, it seems like this year is going to be worst than the last. Their Defense Professor is somehow worse than Quirrell, Harry now has a sort of stalker, and a terrified voice floods his mind on the regular, begging for help before switching to a sinister, murderous tone.

Lan Wangji is lying face down on the bloody array, barely able to lift his head, and so the first thing he sees emerging from the coalesced darkness of resentful energy is a booted foot. It appears hazily in his flickering vision, takes a half step forward and comes to an abrupt stop just before it can step on Lan Wangji’s hand.
“What the hell!?” The voice comes from above him, sharp and alarmed and a little angry, and it’s the most beautiful thing Lan Wangji has ever heard.
OR Lan Wangji tries to find a way to bring Wei Wuxian back, no matter the cost

Whoa. lwj is kidnapped after being struck with a wasting curse, and wwx goes yiling laozu on the salt merchants who took and hurt him. He's hurt and dripping blood the whole time, yet still manages to have a philosophical discussion about the universe and meaning of nothing before laying down a metaphysical retribution that nearly kills him. It's delicious.
The writing is simply beautiful, which is a funny thing to say about a story that evokes such visceral horror.

“Correctly done, your ritual probably would not kill a cultivator,” Wei Wuxian allows. His voice is very cold, very academic. He sounds like Wen Qing, as well he should. He cut his teeth in the finer depths of demonic cultivation first at his shijie’s kitchen table after the war, then at Wen Qing’s elbow. He feels like a creation of the dead women he has known — Madam Yu, shijie, Wen Qing, all of their aborted scorn, their recalled injuries, the way even shijie’s eyes could sometimes look like two dry river stones.
Lan Wangji, there on the floor, once had a mother who was kept locked away. Perhaps her qi was bound with a curse like this one; perhaps Lan Wangji has been used before now as a different sort of hostage. Wei Wuxian will try to do right by her. Wei Wuxian would have wanted her as a mother-in-law even if she were as formidable as Madam Yu.
