“Oh,” Temeraire said, drooping. He darted a glance at Laurence, as if shy of his reaction. “So I will not grow much more after all?”
“You will still grow some,” Sir Edward answered, laughing. “I have never met an Imperial, as they are certainly too valuable to be flying around outside of China, but to my understanding you may grow up to four tons yet, if you continue eating well.”

“What an incredible creature you will be,” he said quietly, “and what a boon for England.” An old hurt panged in his chest; bringing the egg up from the shore was likely the greatest thing he would ever do for his country, and it had only been dumb luck that brought him such a chance. For a moment, he thought of the ships sailing past down the channel, towards Gibraltar or Africa or India, and had to swallow that long-held longing. The chance for such a path was passed, and not only passed, but passed by twenty years. He ought to have released such foolish childhood dreams by now, and yet even a pastor must be allowed an occasional harmless indulgence, he hoped.
“You will go very many exciting places, I expect,” he told the egg. “I hope you do not mind the sea, after the tumble it has given you.” He patted the egg and, to his astonishment, it made an audible gurgling sound beneath his hand, as if in answer.

As if Laurence had voiced an objection, he said, “I cannot spare the other lieutenants, nor can I let a midshipman leap so high in position, even if it is to an inferior service. You will harness the beast.”
Laurence found his voice and said, with steadiness that surprised even him, “I am perfectly willing to try. However, I have not been trained in any of the methods used in the Corps.”
“You’d best figure them out, then,” Barstowe said. He smiled, revealing his yellowed teeth. Laurence felt his mouth tighten, and refused to drop his gaze. “After all, failing to harness such a valuable beast could only be called a betrayal to his Majesty, and you’d have to face the consequences.”
