Summary
Clive was someone who knew who he was, for good and for ill. He knew what he liked, what his skills were, and where he excelled. He was someone who craved efficiency of action. He was most useful in his research lab, working towards advancements in astral magic. The next best use of his time was taking care of his administrative duties as assistant to the deputy director, a position mainly created because both people in charge of actually overseeing the day-to-day management of the branch preferred to spend their time on… *other* activities. They were not people who craved efficiency of action.
By far, the least productive thing Clive could do was travel out to the delta and spend multiple days hunting down mangrove snatchers. That was something any adventurer could manage. They were slow, unintelligent, and not particularly dangerous to someone with essences. Clive *hated* using his time unproductively.

She didn’t seem at all angry anymore, but was still holding the collar of Clive’s robes, albeit in a much looser grip. He looked down at her hand and debated whether he should ask her to let go. On the one hand, looming over her like this made him feel like a delta heron snagged on a fishing net. On the other hand, he didn’t exactly mind the proximity. Now that she wasn’t shouting at him, anyways.
Her eyes followed his, and she did not let go, but her expression shifted as she adjusted her hold on him. Her hand slid upwards to the side of his neck, and her fingertips began playing with the ends of his hair.
“You know,” she said, “you’re the first iron ranker around here I’ve met who would stand up to a Bronze like that.”

Sophie was initially suspicious of Clive. He seemed like an easy mark, but that could all be an act. For one thing, he was friends with Asano. Anyone who could tolerate that manipulative liar for an extended period of time had to have something in common with the guy. For another, she had never once caught him checking her out. Everyone she had ever met got hung up on the way she looked. It wasn’t something she enjoyed, but she had come to expect it. Even Jory, who was so in love with Belinda it made her want to gag, had an occasional case of wandering eyes. The fact that she had never seen even a hint of that from the nerd raised a few alarm bells. And, most unsettling of all, he was taking up all Belinda’s time.

Contrary to popular belief, Clive did have an interest in intimacy. He just always figured he would wait until gold rank, when the process was an exchange of energies, rather than one of viscous fluids. He had tried it the usual way, just enough times to come to the conclusion that if he enjoyed handling slimy objects, he would never have bothered leaving the farm. He barely even tolerated his own secretions, treating them as the unfortunate side effect of a useful method for getting to sleep. But as he looked at the walls filled with definitive proof that he wasn’t alone in his passion, he was struck by the desire to throw the man responsible up against them and repeat every failed sexual experiment he had ever attempted until they finally yielded a favorable result.
