Summary
“Nah, it’s just been a bit since I’ve stopped by, wanted to see what was new with you guys,” Beau says with a shrug. “I brought over food and stuff.”
Beau does not miss how the two wizards subtly exchange a glance. Caleb says, “Nothing of note.”
Neither of them says anything more, so Beau rolls her eyes. “You guys need to get out more.”
“I get out pretty regularly,” Essek says defensively. “In fact, I was recently in Ank’harel.”
“Being a fugitive doesn’t count,” says Beau. Beau reaches for the bottle of wine that she had set out on the counter. “Where do you two keep your glasses?”

Summary
Caleb dismisses the tower early so that Essek won’t be caught up on reading and miss the timing, only to be thrust out onto the street. He offers to recast the tower, of course, but Essek declines; there’s something he likes about the little house on occasion. It’s quaint and small and homey in the way that things weren’t back in the Dynasty nor in the various safehouses he lives in these days. There is also the fact that everything about the home just speaks of Caleb; the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, the various pieces of cat furniture that Yasha helped construct, the little shelve of small trinkets that Essek himself brought for him on his travels… Essek does not explain any of this to Caleb, but the human just smiles and plants a kiss on his forehead, telling him what time he will be home in the evening.

“I wouldn’t want anything big,” says Essek quickly, “but otherwise that sounds lovely.”

Summary
Deirta Thelyss, upon Essek’s entering the office, did not greet her son. She merely waved one elegant hand toward the small sitting area. Without a word, Essek obeyed and moved to sit down in one of the armchairs next to the fireplace. She sat down across from him and reached for the teaset. She poured them each a cup; the tea had a somewhat smokey flavor but Essek could also detect bergamot, cornflower petals, and lavender among the flavors.
“When I was in my first life,” his mother began, “I had a partner and three children. Things were different in the Underdark, of course. Everything was dictated by the clergy of Lolth, even who you were wed to.”

The hand that is not holding onto Caleb’s shirt reaches for one of the closest ones, the amber from the globule shining against the pinkish purple of her skin.
