"It reminds me of your eyes." He slides the ring on my finger. "And to mark our hand-fast."
I spin it slowly, admiring the stone’s lustrous vortices of color: translucent layers of gold, brown, and green, veined with black and glowing as if lit from within. I’ve never seen anything like it.
"Ben, it’s— I—"
His fingers catch my chin and tilt my head until I’m staring straight into the soft intensity of his eyes. My cheeks burn. I try to look aside, but he maintains his gentle hold.
"It was your eyes that caught me first. Alight with innocence and goodness. And hope. You awakened hope in my soul when I had known nothing but hopelessness for a long, long time."

He shouldn’t read it. Even if their bond afforded him insight to her thoughts and feelings, he should allow her this privacy. But his eyes betrayed him, sliding back to the words of their own accord. He caught “I love you” and prickly heat speared his chest. What was this, a farewell note to some amour? The defector perhaps?
He crooked his fingers to call the pages to hand, then reconsidered using the Force, and slipped them from under her arm, slowly and with utmost care to avoid waking her. Maybe he shouldn’t read it, shouldn’t violate her trust like that, but intel was intel. And she was still the enemy.
He shuffled the sheets into order and began at the top.

Kylo flicked a hand in dismissal. “You keep Christmas your way and I’ll keep it mine, which is to say I have more important things to do than indulge in an obsolete festival.” That shower, for starters.
Rey cast a furtive glance over her shoulder, stood on tiptoe, and addressed his ear in a conspiratorial whisper. “You should come. We’re having a party tomorrow. It would mean the world to your mother. It’d be the best Christmas present ever. Will you at least consider it?”
Was she serious? Did she have too much spiked eggnog or mulled wine? “You think General Organa of the Resistance will welcome a visit from the Supreme Leader of the First Order, hmm?”
“Well, no, not when you put it that way, but she’d love to see Ben Solo.” She settled back onto her feet and held his gaze with that soft smile and those rosy cheeks. “For that matter, so would I.”

“I’m fine,” he says, barely loud enough to be heard over the spray. It may well be the first time he’s lied to her, because he’s not fine. Nothing about this situation is fine. “I think the bond will hold as long as you want it to, so don’t hurry on my account. I’m fine, really. I won’t melt.”
At least not from the water.

“It’s okay,” she murmured as if calming a skittish animal. “It’s okay. Don’t go. I’ve—I’ve already told her everything.” She stole a glance at Leia, lower lip caught between her teeth. “Well, almost everything.”
