Peter immediately regretted his words when he saw the hurt flash across MJ’s usual stoic expression. Ned’s eyes were wide beside him, and for a moment, none of them moved except for Peter. His chest was heaving with the effort to keep his emotions in, furious tears once again burning in his eyelids.

If Peter were more coherent watching his father die on the battlefield, that would have been the moment he realised his place in life had changed. If he hadn’t been hyperventilating and inconsolable, listening to Tony’s heartbeat dwindle, he would have realised the implications of Pepper’s actions.
She had pulled him aside. Pushed him away from his dad. She had more of a right to his last moments than Peter, he'd come to realise. Maybe there wasn't a place for him in his father's life anymore.

Tony and Pepper asked Peter to watch Morgan for the afternoon and he nervously agreed. However, once he’d gotten into the swing of things, it didn’t seem that bad- until Morgan wandered off while they were out getting ice cream. He’s relieved when he finds her quickly and unharmed, but he’s also terrified that Tony and Pepper are going to be furious with him when they find out. Or maybe worse- no longer trust him.

While working with Tony in the garage at the Stark's cabin Peter sees a tattoo peeking out from under his mentor's sleeve. He's seen it before, back when the man was recovering in Wakanda but he'd forgotten about it until that moment. When he decides to ask about it, he finds out that there is more to the design than he'd thought, leading to some confusing feelings and a late-night conversation.
Tony talks to Peter about the five years that he was gone and does his best to help Peter understand how much he was missed and how much he is loved.

peter knew that everyone had moved on. it had been 5 years, it was inevitable. but when was someone going to notice that he hadn't?It would be like old times where Tony would come say goodnight to him and give him kisses on the forehead. He had said that it would keep the nightmares away and Peter truly believed it. He didn't want another nightmare of Ben and May. He couldn't.
Peter waited and waited, but the doorknob never opened. Tony never came to tuck him in and kiss him goodnight.
Peter fell asleep like that, looking at the door that would never open, and listened to a lullaby that came from the other room.

“You’re sick.” She mustered up something like bravery, using it to straighten her back and plaster a very grown-up look on her face. “I’ll get Daddy!”
“No!” Morgan jumped, eyes wide. Peter fought to calm his voice. He offered her a smile that couldn’t have been convincing, not even to a five year old. “No, you don’t have to. I feel better now. You don’t have to tell him.”
Morgan’s lips wobbled. Peter knew what her fake pout looked like well enough to know this wasn’t it. “Petey…”
Peter had a lot of reasons to feel guilty. He felt guilty for scaring her. He felt guilty for forgetting to lock his bedroom door, for making scaring her a possibility. He kind of, in a way, felt guilty for doing it in the first place, though not nearly enough to stop.
But more than anything, he felt guilty for this: “Morgan, promise me you won’t tell him. He…he won’t let us swim anymore if you do. And I’m not sick, my tummy just hurt a little bit, but I’m all better now. Promise me you won’t tell him, okay?”
“But…”
“Morgan. Promise.”

“You know,” his Dad mused when they were halfway through the bread and the ducks were all swimming around them. “I used to come here during the 5 years when you were . . . gone.”
Peter didn’t know what to say, he’d half expected his Dad to of brought Morgan.
“I never brought any bread,” Tony sighed. “I just sat on that park bench for hours. I thought about bringing Morgan one year but . . . i wanted this place to be ours and ours only.”
Peter couldn’t even say how much that meant to him.
“You’ve changed,” Peter admitted. His Dad had created a whole new life for himself, one that Peter wasn’t really sure where he fit. All of his stuff had been thrown out and the Tower was sold.
“I know,” Tony sighed, ducking his head down to kiss Peter’s crown. “But i’ll always be your Dad."
Peter tries to find his place in the world after the Avengers defeated Thanos. As much as he knows he's loved, he can't shake the feelings of being replaced when he comes into a new world where his father is now married and had another child.

Peter doesn’t like soft things, but this isn’t soft. It’s solid and steady and strong and feels like a truth he can believe in. It feels like presence.
