God's Game

Summary:

The lands of Elysium has always been a chaotic mosaic of magics and monsters. However, mankind eventually tamed the wilds and used magic to stave off danger and make their lives comfortable. The accumulation of human hope eventually coalesced into the Lalocian Empire who ruled Elysium uncontested for centuries. Then, as sudden as a lightning strike, it all fell into ruin and left Rayln Hearthsinger to fill the void his father left in his lands. Luckily for him, a nascent infant god, Rhaeous, had chosen him and his closest ally as his heralds in a game between all the other gods in the lands.

Chapter 1: After all this time

Chapter Text

For a mortal, the thoughts of gods would be so incomprehensible that the physical limitations of their meat-brains stops them from even coming close to attaining such thinking. So suddenly being one after what I would assume having an inferior existence would probably render anyone into shock.

I woke up to what seemed like the inside of a galaxy windows pc wallpaper. The last thing I remember was passing out after I had a gaming session with Morgan. Before I managed to orient myself, an all-encompassing voice boomed out to me.

“Rhaeus, the Comforting and Punishing One. Welcome to godhood.”

Suddenly, a white hot light flashes in front of me. It revealed a lush vibrant planet with a few continents that look wildly different from each other. Each landmass had differently coloured foliage with unique fauna. Though, some of animals looked too big to be supported by the size of the planet or the density of oxygen in it's atmosphere. To my left was a blueish gray planetoid acting as the planet’s moon, lightly attracting the ocean and driving the planet's weather. Further away from the planet was a sun-like star, so bright that it lit up half of the planet. Though, either I had shades on or it was a fake sun, but this sun didn't hurt my eyes like they did before. Looking at it more closely, it was a bright bird on fire in a fetal position either sleeping or dead.

“Behold. Elysium. Where you and your fellow gods will determine who will replace me.” I look towards where the voice comes from, only to see a cloak concealing tiny bright stars that look like teardrops from a crying night. “I am Aeon, the Over-god of Elysium."

What was an Over-god? Based on the lore of this dream, maybe he's like Yahweh or Jesus.

"Try to make your godly form.”. He commands, still as a statue.

Instinctively, I focused on feeling my body that didn't feel like it was even there. This feeling of dissociation was getting uncomfortable. There was nothing underneath me but the endless expanse of the galaxy. No body, no face, nothing. It was like being in one of those sensory-deprivation tanks but I'm sensing someone else. How could I even start at such a task as making my form?

“Just imagine forming your body with the universe.” Aeon said, materializing an arm made out of stars.

The fuck does that even mean. I look to the being with a confused face, only remembering a moment later that without a face, he probably didn't see it. As a first attempt, my mind tried to imagine a general nebulous energy covering my hand. Funnily enough, the golden light from the stars clump together like plasma to form the shape of a hand, then the rest of my body. The brightness hurt my eyes, like as if I was staring into the sun when I was on Earth.

“Yeesh, can I change what I’m made of? It’s so bright.”. I wasn’t sure if i kept that in my head or said it out loud. Looking back up at the cloak didn’t give me an answer.

“Maybe, I’m glad you figured out how to use your voice.” Aeon floats down to the lands of Elysium, pulling me with him.

We touch down on a soft green meadow with towering trees and blanketing shrubbery. A variety of animals, fictional and not, surround us, acting more peaceful than what their fangs and claws would suggest.

“Right now, you are too new to directly interact with the world. So you have to use a domain. Think of it as hands and legs, you interact with the world indirectly through your domain. It will be your eyes and ears to this world.” Aeon produces an arm made with stars. “Since I still rule this world, my domain is creation and destruction itself.”.

“So am I like a pixie or an elemental or something?”

“You are a deity. I am lending you the light of the celestials.” Aeon circles around me, inspecting the nature around us. “You can see wherever your light touches."

The animals around us don’t react to our presence at all, even when the starry cloak closely inspected an animal’s face. When it was satisfied, it looked back up at me.

“Become the ruler of Elysium and you can have it all. Be omnipotent, change the laws that govern this world to your whim, have an entire universe worship your existence.” This sounds like a lot of work and too grandiose. Even if it's a dream, being a god does not sound enticing.

“I don’t want that though. I don’t want to be a god.” This might end the tracks of the dream if I lucidly say no. Hopefully I can wake up or move on to the next dreamscape.

“That’s not what you said before you ascended.”

Before I ascended? What does he mean by that?

“As a god, you exist as long as your domain has not been subsumed by or given to  another and you have at least one follower.” He continued, dismissing my rejection and moving o to the next subject. The stars twinkle as Aeon speaks, almost as if it’s using the stars as his mouth. “Lose your last domain or last follower and your essence will be dragged into the House of the Divine and be a mindless spirit. As the god of my celestial light, you were made the most powerful god out of all the gods that exist save for me. Because of that, the previous pantheon and the former holder of your domain decided to seal most of your power in human faith.”

“But worry about that later. Pick your herald and go do as you will. I wish you the best of luck, Rhaeous.” Aeon spirits away, pushing me back to float at an eagle eyes’ view of the world.

“What the fuck?”
