Chapter Text
The heavy wooden doors of the Yamamoto mansion slid open with a soft groan as the Commander stepped inside, carrying the sleeping form of the young boy securely in his arms. Shigeya's head rested softly against Yamamoto's broad shoulder, his dark hair tipped with gold rising and falling with slow, steady breaths.
Attendants rushing down the candlelit corridor froze mid-step at the sight. Before anyone could utter a word of inquiry, Yamamoto raised a single, commanding hand.
"His name is Shigeya Yamamoto," the commander stated, his deep voice echoing authoritatively through the halls. "He is my son. He will be treated as the heir of this house, and a proper bedchamber is to be prepared for him by tomorrow morning."
The attendants bowed deeply, their eyes wide with quiet astonishment, scrambling to obey. Yamamoto carried the boy down the dimly lit hallway, laying him gently onto the quilted pallet of a guest suite. He lingered for a moment, watching the peaceful expression of the newly named heir, before turning away.
Yamamoto knew the truth. The localized tremor of Shigeya's arrival had sent shockwaves rippling through every squad barracks in the Seireitei. The only reason a battalion of Soul Reapers hadn't swarmed the central garden was because he had been standing directly in the epicenter to intercept them. But ignoring Central 46 was impossible. If he did not officially report the anomaly, the bureaucratic council would label the boy an existential threat and order his immediate execution.
Moments later, Yamamoto stood inside the austere, semi-circular chamber of Central 46. The masked, robed sages sat tier upon tier above him in the shadows, their voices already murmuring in agitated consensus.
Before Yamamoto could even draw breath to deliver his report, a chorus of reprimands rained down upon him.
"Commander Yamamoto!" shouted one voice from the upper tiers, dripping with condescension and outrage. "What is the meaning of this unprecedented security failure? A foreign spiritual anomaly drops out of the sky into the heart of the Seireitei, and you handle it with utter complacency!"
"Insubordinate silence!" another hissed. "An unvetted power of unknown origin—you harbor a disaster in your own home! Explain yourself at once, or face charges of gross negligence!"
Yamamoto's jaw tightened. A dark, furious heat flared in his chest, and he began to channel his massive Reiatsu, ready to crush the arrogant councilmen into terrified silence.
Clap. Clap.
A sharp, rhythmic sound cut through the oppressive atmosphere. From the grand archway behind the council chambers, a flamboyant figure stepped into the light. Oetsu Nimaya strode forward, wearing tinted glasses and a flashy grin, carrying himself with the effortless swagger of a man who owned the dimensions.
"Whoa, hold your horses, folks," Oetsu interrupted, flashing a bright smile as he raised a hand. "Put the pitchforks down. This is an issue that directly involves the Royal Guard."
Yamamoto froze, his hand pulling back from his zanpakuto hilt as he stared at the inventor of the Asauchi in profound shock.
Before the council could protest, Oetsu raised his voice to address the room. "The Soul King himself has formally acknowledged and approved the adoption of the soul that descended into the Seireitei by Shigekuni Yamamoto."
An audible gasp swept through the tiers of Central 46. The robed sages erupted into chaotic murmurs of disbelief. Even Yamamoto stood motionless, his amber eyes narrowing as he processed the revelation.
Oetsu chuckled, reaching into his cloak and pulling out a long, slender object wrapped in cloth. With a flick of his wrist, he tossed a straight-bladed, immaculate zanpakuto straight through the air toward Yamamoto.
Yamamoto caught the hilt with practiced ease, looking down at the weapon.
"Consider it a housewarming present for the new Yamamoto heir," Oetsu said smoothly, keeping his grin wide. "Crafted using some personally requested souls straight from the inventory of the Soul King himself."
Yamamoto's grip tightened on the hilt. He raised his gaze, locking onto Oetsu with sharp, piercing eyes. "What plans do the Royal Guard have for Shigeya?"
Oetsu let out an exaggerated sigh, shrugging his shoulders. "Beats me, man. The King just said it was made with souls 'leftover from the war'—whatever that's supposed to mean." Oetsu's smile sharpened into something harder as he turned to face the upper tiers of Central 46. "And let me make this crystal clear to the wise men up top: the Royal Guard has their eyes on this boy. The Soul King is watching. If any of you try to interfere with the new Yamamoto heir... well, let's just say my blades have a habit of finding the wrong necks."
The silence in the chamber was absolute. Central 46 swallowed hard, the terrifying reality setting in: the boy was untouchable.
Yamamoto turned on his heel, walking out of the chamber with Oetsu matching his stride.
Once they stepped outside into the quiet stone courtyard away from prying ears, Yamamoto didn't waste a second. He held out the straight-bladed zanpakuto. "Oetsu. Tell me the truth about this blade. Now that we are away from the council."
Oetsu's flashy smile vanished instantly, replaced by a grave, dead-eyed seriousness. He stopped walking and crossed his arms.
"Normally, to forge a proper Asauchi and shape a Zanpakuto, it takes ordinary Soul Reaper souls," Oetsu said quietly, his voice dropping an octave. "But the Soul King... he insisted on using very specific souls. Souls that just... arrived in the palace archives right when I was ordered to forge this. It's why the blade is straight—unyielding, perfectly balanced, completely unlike a standard Shinigami sword."
Oetsu reached out, placing a heavy, solemn hand on Yamamoto's shoulder and staring deep into his eyes.
"Yamamoto... your new boy is a monster," Oetsu whispered. "The Soul King looked into him and declared it impossible for that child to ever turn against the Soul Society. That's the only reason he authorized this weapon. I don't have a damn clue what that kid did when he was alive, but the Soul King has seen him—or something very much like him—before."
Yamamoto absorbed every single word, locking the terrifying implications into his memory. For a fraction of a second, he considered telling Oetsu the truth about Shigeya—about the dual souls that made up the boy's core. But something held him back. He kept his council.
"Thank you, Oetsu," Yamamoto said gravely, bowing his head in acknowledgment.
Oetsu offered a faint, tight-lipped nod and turned to leave. As Yamamoto walked away toward his estate, Oetsu stood in the courtyard, looking up at the pale sky, muttering softly to the empty air.
"I look forward to seeing how the boy grows with that blade," Oetsu murmured to himself, his mind racing. The very first Zanpakuto housing a soul fragment equivalent to the Soul King... Is he the new anchor for this fracturing world? Or is he the anchor's chosen guardian?
Back within the quiet walls of the Yamamoto mansion, the boy slept soundly, completely unaware of the cosmic gears he had set into motion.
The morning sun filtered through the intricate paper screens of the Yamamoto mansion, casting warm patterns across the wooden floors of Shigeya's new bedchamber.
A gentle, polite rap sounded against the door before it slid open. An attendant stepped into the room, bowing low. "Shigeya-sama," the servant spoke respectfully. "Yamamoto-sama is downstairs, waiting to partake in the morning meal with you."
With that, the attendant bowed once more and quietly withdrew, sliding the door shut.
Shigeya blinked, sitting up on his futon as he processed the title. Inside the shared expanse of their mindscape, Naruto's jaw dropped.
"Did he just call you 'sama'?!" Naruto hollered, his spirit form throwing his hands up in disbelief. "We've got maids and butlers now?! Man, I must've had a seriously crappy past life if I never had anyone serving me breakfast!"
Sasuke stood nearby, arms crossed, offering a dry, unamused deadpan. "We both had a shitty life, dobe."
Naruto froze, blinking twice before rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, a red tint dusting his cheeks. "Oh. Yeah. Heh. Right... totally forgot about that part for a second."
Shigeya let out a quiet, internal chuckle at their bickering, shaking his head.
"Go on," Sasuke urged mentally, his dark eyes sharp. "Go meet our new foster father."
Stepping out of the room, Shigeya navigated the polished corridors until he reached the primary dining hall. Sitting cross-legged at a low wooden table was Shigekuni, looking up from a steaming bowl of rice. The commander offered a brief, welcoming wave, gesturing to the seat opposite him.
Shigeya slid onto the mat, settling in. Before he could touch his chopsticks, Shigekuni narrowed his eyes slightly, a thoughtful look crossing his scarred face. "Tell me, Shigeya... have you ever heard of Soul Reapers or the Soul Society before today?"
Shigeya shook his head slowly.
"It is a Soul Reaper's job, honor, and responsibility to tend to the cycle of life and death," Shigekuni explained, his deep voice carrying a steady, rhythmic authority. "We guide lost souls to the Soul Society—the afterlife—destroy monsters known as Hollows that attempt to corrupt and devour those souls, and protect the reincarnation cycle from collapsing."
Shigeya's midnight-blue eyes lit up, a sudden burst of recognition crossing his features. "It's just like the Shinigami!"
Shigekuni let out a low chuckle. "While I am certain you are referring to something else entirely, here in the Soul Society, Shinigami and Soul Reapers are one and the same. The terms mean identical things."
Deep in the mindscape, Naruto let out an involuntary shiver, crossing his arms. "Brrr... I really hope those bony, sword-carrying Shinigami from our world aren't just wandering around out here."
Aloud, Shigeya tilted his head, voicing the thought. "Are those evil Shinigami made of bones and blood wandering around the Soul Society, too?"
Shigekuni studied the boy for a long, silent minute, measuring the strange question. He shook his head. "Soul Reapers do not look like bony demons. In truth, that description sounds closer to a Hollow than a Soul Reaper. But I assure you, whatever ghosts or spirits you recall from your past, here we are simply the guardians of the balance."
In the mindscape, Sasuke raised an eyebrow. "Perhaps our world's Shinigami got lazy and finally outsourced his job to us, since we couldn't get into the Pure Lands."
Naruto hummed thoughtfully, leaning his chin on his hand. "Protecting souls and getting stronger? Honestly, sounds like a pretty decent gig."
Shigekuni cleared his throat, bringing Shigeya back to the present. "I myself am a Soul Reaper—and a rather strong one at that."
Shigeya's eyes widened, a bright, eager smile breaking across his face. "Can you teach me how to be a Soul Reaper, Tou-sama?" He added the honorific smoothly, leaning heavily into the innocent charm of a child trying to butter up his guardian.
Deep in the physical world, a phantom twitch rippled across Shigekuni's stoic face. A jolt of unexpected warmth hit his chest at the direct use of Tou-sama combined with the child's earnest expression—a nearly lethal dose of the cute factor for a hardened general. But more importantly, through his spiritual peripheral vision, Shigekuni caught a brief glimpse of the boy's inner soul core: the two distinct spiritual currents, looping together like a perfect Yin-Yang symbol, suddenly flared and pulsed in absolute synchronization. Fascinating, the commander noted internally, filing the anomaly away.
Shigekuni chuckled, a rumbling sound of surrender. "Of course. Even if you did not wish it, as a member of my family, you would be expected to walk this path."
Shigeya's head bobbed up and down so fast it looked like he was performing a high-speed Shunpo.
Seeing the boy's enthusiasm, Shigekuni clapped his hands twice. Several attendants hurried into the dining hall, carrying heavy stacks of ancient, leather-bound texts. They set them down in a towering pile directly in front of Shigeya.
Shigeya stared at the stack, his expression shifting into a comical mix of sheer exasperation and overwhelming excitement.
"These volumes cover the foundational principles of Reiatsu, the history of the Soul Society, the Noble Clans, and the layout of the Seireitei," Shigekuni stated, his tone turning instructional. "This is basic education you will need if you are to have any success as a Soul Reaper."
Yamamoto's expression then darkened, a grave seriousness bleeding into the room. "There is one more thing you must understand. While Soul Reapers preserve the balance by purifying even corrupted souls and returning them to the cycle... there are humans who seek to disrupt and eradicate these souls entirely, denying them any chance at peace."
Inside the mindscape, the Naruto half bristled, an instinctive wave of deep offense washing over the boy's features.
"Who are they?" Shigeya asked, his voice dropping into a sharp, hardened register.
"They are the Quincy," Shigekuni answered flatly. "They cannot be reasoned with, and they are power-hungry fanatics."
Shigeya sat in absolute silence, letting the gravity of the declaration sink in. Internally, the two halves of his consciousness weighed the reality: Naruto's innate desire to talk things out and seek understanding warred with Sasuke's cold, pragmatic certainty. We'll try to talk to them first, Naruto conceded mentally. If they don't listen... Sasuke finished the thought with grim finality: Then we do what we must.
Shigeya looked up, locking his midnight-blue eyes onto his adoptive father with absolute conviction. "If that's the case, I'll do whatever it takes to stop them."
A satisfied smirk crossed Shigekuni's face. "Excellent conviction." He leaned forward slightly. "The sooner you finish these texts, the sooner I will enroll you in the Genji School—an academy dedicated to forging elite Soul Reapers, where I serve as both Headmaster and lead instructor."
Shigekuni tapped a finger against the stack of books. "Because we are actively at war with the Quincy, the academy curriculum is grueling, focusing almost entirely on combat and tactical strategy. These foundational texts will not be covered in class. You are receiving advanced material well before adults are even admitted to my school."
Even Naruto, having lived through the crucible of a world war, readily understood the tactical necessity. Shigeya nodded firmly.
Without wasting another second, Shigeya reached out, grabbed the top book on Reiatsu, and immediately flipped it open, his eyes scanning the pages with blistering speed.
In the mindscape, Naruto groaned, leaning back. "Man, reading is a drag. This would be way better if we could learn actual techniques right away."
Sasuke's eyes lit up at the thought. "He's right. Ask him about techniques."
Shigeya looked up from the page, blinking at his foster father. "Tou-sama? Are there types of techniques we can learn? Like... spitting fire or blowing things up?"
Yamamoto was half a second away from laughing out loud at the childish simplicity of the question, but stopped when he caught the unusual, terrifying clarity behind the boy's eyes.
"Indeed," Shigekuni replied smoothly. "They are called Kidō—incantation spells. They are divided into Hadō for destructive force, Bakudō for support and binding, and Kaidō for healing."
Shigeya's eyes shone with absolute fervor. "I want to learn all of them. So I can kick anyone's ass who gets in our way."
Yamamoto let out a genuine, hearty laugh that echoed off the wooden beams of the hall. "A bold ambition! Prove your aptitude for it once you enter the school, and I will personally provide you with the master texts to study."
A wide, confident grin spread across Shigeya's face. He snapped his attention back to the book, devouring the text with a terrifying, hyper-focused vigor designed to absorb and retain every single word as fast as humanly possible.
Shigekuni nodded in deep approval, rising from the table. "Make sure you take breaks to rest your eyes, young one," he advised, offering a parting wave.
Shigeya merely waved a hand dismissively without looking up from the page, prompting another low, amused chuckle from the old commander as he walked out of the room.
For the past three months, Shigekuni had watched his adopted son through the lens of quiet, unblinking fascination.
It had taken barely a week for the boy to completely consume the foundational text on Reiatsu. What followed was a masterclass in unnerving discipline. On multiple occasions, Shigekuni had observed Shigeya sitting out in the mansion's sprawling rock gardens, locked in deep meditation—a level of mental stillness he would never have expected from a child. Then, without warning, the boy's overflowing spiritual pressure would completely vanish, dropping to absolute zero as if he did not possess a single drop of Reiatsu in his entire body.
Yet, when Shigekuni tested him from afar, Shigeya would casually open his eyes, look directly at his father's hidden observation point across the courtyard, and flash a bright, cheerful wave. Not only could the boy suppress his power with terrifying perfection, but he could maintain active sensory awareness of his surroundings without leaving a trace of his own presence.
Abilities and practical combat principles were absorbed like water into dry sand. General Seireitei politics and aristocratic structure took marginally longer, but even those dry bureaucratic texts were consumed at a blinding pace.
When the three months finally elapsed, Shigekuni sent an attendant to collect his heir and direct him to the primary dojo.
Shigekuni sat on the raised wooden dais, his posture rigid and composed as the sliding shoji door parted. Shigeya stepped inside, stepping lightly before dropping into a formal, flawless bow.
"You requested my presence, Tou-sama?" the boy asked, his voice steady.
Shigekuni paused for a fraction of a second, deciding on absolute candor. "Tell me, Shigeya... have you ever learned of how certain souls come to the Soul Society with their memories entirely intact? It is a rare occurrence, but it happens." The commander's amber eyes fixed on the boy. "Are you one of those souls?"
Silence stretched heavily across the dojo. Shigeya went completely still, his jaw tightening slightly as a storm of complex emotions flashed behind his midnight-blue eyes.
Shigekuni let out a soft sigh, raising a placating hand. "Do not mistake my question for interrogation. It is not frowned upon here. But for the lessons I intend to impart next, this knowledge is critical."
After a long moment of intense internal contemplation, Shigeya's shoulders dropped. He looked up, his face hardening into a stern, resolute nod.
Before the boy could speak, Shigekuni raised a palm to stop him. "You do not need to voice your memories. What you lived through before is your private burden. I only hope that, in time, I earn your trust enough for you to share your story freely."
A visible wave of relief washed over Shigeya. The tense lines of his face melted away, replaced by a genuine, unguarded smile. "Thank you, Tou-sama."
"Now," Shigekuni continued, shifting gears into tactical assessment. "Do you have any prior experience wielding a blade from your past life? This is vital so we do not compromise whatever foundation you have already built."
Shigeya nodded firmly. "I have extensive experience. Mostly with straight blades—ninjātō and chōkatō."
Shigekuni had to consciously suppress the shock that threatened to break his stoic mask. He thought back to the straight-bladed zanpakuto Oetsu had delivered three months prior—a sword forged to hyper-specific parameters directly requested by the Soul King. Somehow, Shigekuni realized with a jolt of certainty, this boy possesses a direct, undeniable connection to the Soul King, whether he realizes it or not.
Rising to his feet, Shigekuni stepped down from the dais, closing the distance between them until he towered over the child.
"A blade is the lifeblood of every great Soul Reaper," Shigekuni stated, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Even those who specialize in other arts will find their Zanpakuto is always better suited to them than anything else—surpassing even Hakuda unarmed combat and Kidō spells. When one masters the blade, one masters oneself. Do you understand?"
Shigeya nodded without hesitation. "I understand."
Satisfied, Shigekuni turned, walking over to an ornate wooden rack against the back wall. He lifted a long, cloth-wrapped package and turned back, holding the straight-bladed zanpakuto horizontally toward his son.
"Take it," Shigekuni commanded quietly. "This weapon was crafted specifically with you in mind. But you will have to grow much stronger if you ever wish to discover who authored it."
With a sharp, serious nod, Shigeya reached out and wrapped his small hands around the hilt.
The moment his skin made contact with the weapon, the boy's breath hitched. A rapid, violent succession of expressions swept across Shigeya's face: sheer shock, a flash of deep-seated fear, a spike of cold anger, instant disapproval, shock once more, a long stretch of profound confusion, and finally, a deep, shuddering sigh that seemed to drain all the tension from his bones.
Shigekuni watched the internal emotional tempest with extreme intrigue. "Shigeya?"
Shaken out of his stupor, the boy blinked, looking up at his father.
"Were you able to communicate with your blade already?" Shigekuni asked, stepping closer. "Given that it was forged explicitly for your soul, a bond was inevitable, but to achieve communion instantly..."
Shigeya let out another long sigh, running a hand through his raven-black hair. "When I read the texts on Shikai, I learned that a blade's spirit is supposed to reflect the soul of its wielder. I won't speak of my past, but... I am almost positive this blade was never a standard Asauchi. Yet, it is deeply linked to every part of who I am." He looked down at the weapon, a faint, complex smile touching his lips. "And honestly? There could be no spirit better suited to bridge what I was and what I am now."
Shigekuni stared at the boy, a mixture of profound awe and disbelief settling in his chest. He recovered quickly, waving toward the exit. "Show me your release."
Stepping out into the private stone garden behind the dojo, the crisp morning air caught their cloaks.
"Do not suppress your Reiatsu," Shigekuni instructed, standing a few paces back. "Perform a full release so I can properly analyze and guide your output."
Shigeya nodded. He planted his feet, closed his eyes, and held the sheathed zanpakuto horizontally before his chest.
For a heartbeat, the garden was dead silent.
Then, the atmospheric pressure violently inverted.
A crushing, overwhelming wave of spiritual pressure detonated outward from Shigeya's small frame, slamming against the stone walls of the courtyard with the force of a tidal wave. Yamamoto's eyes widened as the sheer density of the Reiatsu rattled his own seasoned defenses.
Suddenly, a voice—crisp and clear, as if whispered directly into the ear of everyone present—cut through the wind.
"Reclaim, Kaguya-hime."
The spiritual pressure multiplied tenfold in an instant. The wooden handle and scabbard of the zanpakuto violently transformed, turning a stark, bleached white, resembling polished bone. Down the length of the sheath, nine dark magatama markings materialized in a neat row, mirrored by a single magatama stamped onto each side of the hilt.
Shigeya snapped his eyes open and drew the blade.
The moment cleared steel met the air, it absorbed every photon of light around it, shining with a terrifying, absolute darkness. He swung the blade down to his side, and the raging storm of Reiatsu instantly ceased its chaotic swirl, settling heavily into the air like water filling a subterranean chamber.
Yamamoto stared, absolutely transfixed.
Shigeya's eyes were no longer midnight blue. They had turned a pale, milky-white, giving the illusion of blindness—though Yamamoto knew with absolute certainty that the boy could see far more than any mortal eye ever could.
A web of prominent veins bulged fiercely around the corners of Shigeya's eyes. The boy let out a sharp, breathless intake of air, his gaze darting around the garden with sudden, hyper-spatial clarity.
"Incredible..." Shigeya whispered aloud, tracking the invisible flow of spiritual currents pulsing through the distant trees and stone. "This... this is what the Byakugan feels like."
With a conscious mental shift, Shigeya reeled his power back inward. The oppressive spiritual pressure evaporated, vanishing completely from the senses as the boy suppressed his aura once more, though the bone-white Shikai remained active in his grip.
"The Shikai itself is not Reiatsu-intensive," Shigeya explained calmly, adjusting his grip on the dark blade. "I won't need to keep it released unless I require intimidation or active sensory range."
Shigekuni stood in stunned silence. He had expected prodigy; he had not expected a child who instantly grasped complex battle mechanics and energy conservation on his very first release.
A slow, proud smile broke across the commander's face. I didn't just adopt an heir, Shigekuni realized with a thrill of anticipation. I adopted a legend.
While the external world paused in breathless awe at the physical manifestation of his Shikai, Shigeya's consciousness plummeted inward.
The grey mist of their shared mindscape had completely transformed. Gone was the barren expanse; in its place stood a sprawling, magnificent Edo-style temple framed by deep, rustling forests. Carved into the polished wooden beams of the architecture were the interwoven crests of the Ōtsutsuki clan, the Uchiha fan, and the Uzumaki spiral.
In the center of the temple courtyard, a young woman was kneeling on the wooden planks, looking thoroughly bewildered. She possessed the delicate, teenage-like features of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, but her expression lacked the chilling, god-like apathy of the tyrant they once fought. Instead, she looked like a confused girl trapped in a room with two overly aggressive interrogators.
For the entire duration of Shigeya's conversation with Yamamoto outside, Naruto and Sasuke had been aggressively cross-examining the poor spirit.
"I'm telling you, you've got horns! Well, you had horns! And a third eye!" Naruto was shouting, pacing back and forth with his hands thrown up in exasperation. "How do you not remember trying to turn the whole world into a giant tree?! Are you pulling our legs?!"
Kaguya let out a long, scolded sigh, shrinking back slightly. "I... I told you both already," she murmured, her voice soft and entirely devoid of malice. "I know we share a deep connection—I can feel that we are bound to this vessel. But I swear to you, I have never done anything worthy of being treated like a criminal!"
Sasuke crossed his arms, staring down at her with a critical gaze. He let out a low sigh, turning to Naruto. "Stop yelling, dobe. Look at her. This is a purified echo of Kaguya—stripped of the God Tree's corruption, with no knowledge of the atrocities committed in our past."
Kaguya blinked up at Sasuke, looking both concerned and apologetic. "What... what did I do to you? Master?"
Naruto scratched the back of his head, his aggressive posture instantly melting into sheepish confusion. He let out an awkward laugh. "Yeah... okay, definitely not the same person. I can't picture the old Kaguya calling anyone master."
At that moment, Shigeya's mental projection manifested beside them. He let out an exhausted sigh, walking over and gently patting the young spirit on the head. "It's alright. We're all different people now anyway. Part of a Soul Reaper's job is purification and granting second chances. What happened in the past stays in the past."
Kaguya looked up, startled by the casual warmth. Shigeya offered her a hand to help her up. As she rose, Shigeya caught sight of their relative heights and immediately let out an indignant huff. Just like everyone else in this new world, she towered over him.
Damn it, Shigeya thought, a mild psychological trauma echoing straight from Naruto's lifelong complex about height. Why am I always the short one?
Kaguya noticed his childish pout, misinterpreting the source of his frustration. A soft, gentle smile touched her lips, and she reached out, affectionately patting the top of his head in return. "Do not worry, little one. As your blade, I will help you grow strong."
Naruto snorted, bursting into loud laughter. "Don't sweat it, kid! I used to be a total shrimp too." He threw a heavy arm around Sasuke's shoulders, both of them offering matching, smug grins. "Look at the teme here. Took him forever to hit a growth spurt. You'll be big and strong in no time."
Sasuke shot Naruto a murderous glare, but didn't argue.
Shigeya rolled his eyes, cutting the mental link and snapping his awareness back to the physical world.
The garden of the Yamamoto mansion rushed back into focus. Shigekuni was standing just a few paces away, his single eye sharp with analytical interest.
"Are you finished communing with your sword?" Yamamoto asked.
Shigeya nodded, taking a breath as a flood of innate knowledge—encoded directly into his mind upon the Shikai's release—settled into his understanding. "I am. The weapon's capabilities are... extensive."
He raised the bone-white hilt slightly, breaking down the mechanics for his foster father. "When I damage an opponent with the blade, I can manipulate their Reiatsu. I can flood their internal pathways with their own energy to disrupt their balance, or completely sever and shut out Reiatsu from any area I slash. Furthermore, the blade absorbs excess spiritual pressure leaking from a target's body to bolster my own. However..." Shigeya frowned slightly, "if I absorb too much, it becomes volatile. I'll need a reliable way to vent it—like through Kidō."
Shigekuni listened intently, his expression a mask of stone.
Shigeya then pointed two fingers toward his pale, veined eyes. "And these are the Byakugan. It grants a complete three-hundred-and-sixty-degree field of vision, allows me to perceive spiritual pressure flowing through the air and within a living body, and helps me precisely isolate the exact points of Reiatsu I want to target or sever."
Yamamoto let out a low, gravelly hum, studying the boy. "A formidable array of abilities. But it is entirely useless if you absorb more than your vessel can handle, or if you simply fail to land a strike on a superior opponent." Yamamoto's gaze hardened constructively. "That is why, alongside sword combat, Kidō and Shunpo will be the primary targets of your focus when you begin attending the Genji School tomorrow."
Shigeya blinked, his eyes going comically wide—a striking, bizarre sight with the veined Byakugan active. "Wait... I'm actually going to the academy?"
Yamamoto let out a rare, rumbling chuckle. "It would be the height of foolishness to keep a talent like yours locked away. Most Soul Reapers require years of grueling meditation merely to catch a glimpse of their Shikai. You have achieved it on day one. Because of that, your curriculum will be far more rigorous than that of ordinary recruits."
A fierce, eager smile spread across Shigeya's face. He nodded firmly. "I accept. I don't care how hellish the training is, as long as it makes me stronger."
With a conscious mental command, Shigeya deactivated his Shikai.
The oppressive, dense aura evaporated. The pale, milky-white of his eyes shifted back into the deep, mesmerizing midnight blue of his natural iris, and the bulging veins around his temples smoothed away. In his grip, the blade's light-absorbing void-black steel settled into a simple, polished, reflective black, while the bone-white hilt and scabbard lost the glowing intensity of the nine black magatama marks, leaving them etched as subtle, permanent dark seals along the scabbard.
Shigekuni offered a final, approving nod at the boy's effortless control over his power.
"A commendable display," Yamamoto said, turning toward the mansion. "Rest well tonight, Shigeya. Tomorrow, your true trials begin."
---
The morning sun hung low over the sprawling training grounds of the Genji Academy, casting long, sharp shadows across the packed dirt yards. Rows of aspiring Soul Reapers—young adults, hardened veterans of the early Rukongai skirmishes, and eager young prodigies—stood rigidly at attention, their murmurs instantly dying the moment the heavy double doors of the central dojo slid open.
Stepping out onto the raised wooden veranda was Shigekuni Yamamoto. His towering, muscular frame radiated an oppressive, scorching authority, and behind him walked a child who immediately drew every pair of eyes in the yard.
Shigeya walked with a measured, silent tread. Dressed in standard, pristine black academy robes that fit his small, seven-year-old frame perfectly, the white-sheathed, magatama-marked zanpakuto rested at his hip. His raven-black hair, tipped with brilliant golden-yellow, caught the morning light, framing a face set with the cold, calculating composure of a seasoned veteran.
A wave of low, incredulous whispers rippled through the ranks.
"Is that... a kid?" "He looks barely seven years old! What is he doing in the primary combat corps?" "Wait... look at who's walking in front of him. That's the Commander himself."
Yamamoto stopped at the edge of the veranda, casting a heavy, sweeping glare over the assembled students until complete, suffocating silence took hold.
"Silence," Yamamoto commanded, his deep voice carrying the weight of thunder. He gestured to the boy beside him. "This is Shigeya Yamamoto. He is my adopted son, and he has been enrolled as a student starting today."
The whispers flared up instantly, turning into a stunned uproar.
"The Commander's son?!" "Adopted? He brought a child into the academy during a war?!" "Is he a mascot, or does the Commander actually expect him to fight?"
Ignoring the chaos of the courtyard, Shigeya let out a slow, quiet breath. Deep within the mindscape, Naruto crossed his arms with a confident smirk, while Sasuke's eyes scanned the crowd, instantly picking out the strongest fighters and potential rivals in the ranks.
"Heh, look at all these chumps staring," Naruto chuckled mentally. "They have no idea what they're looking at."
"Let them underestimate us," Sasuke replied coolly. "It will make the lesson faster."
Back in the physical world, Shigekuni raised a single hand, cutting off the murmurs before they could grow. But before the commander could continue, a broad-shouldered, older student with a jagged scar across his cheek stepped half a pace out of the front row, a cynical grin plastered across his face.
"Commander," the trainee called out, his voice loud enough to echo across the entire yard. "With all due respect, the Genji School is a crucible for those who bleed for the Soul Society. A child of that size—even if he shares your name—will be a liability on the field. How are we expected to take training seriously when we're babysitting?"
A tense, breathless hush fell over the courtyard. Several instructors winced, waiting for the commander's fiery wrath to incinerate the insolent student.
Instead, a heavy, deadpan silence hung in the air.
Yamamoto didn't even blink. He slowly turned his single-eyed gaze down toward Shigeya, offering a faint, almost imperceptible twitch of his lips. "He asks a fair question. Show them why you are here, Shigeya."
Shigeya stepped forward, his midnight-blue eyes locking onto the older trainee with an eerie, flat stillness. Without a word of hesitation, his hand dropped to the white hilt at his waist.
"Reclaim, Kaguya-hime."
The quiet, crisp whisper barely left his lips, but the atmospheric pressure shifted violently. A blinding wave of bone-white and absolute, light-absorbing darkness surged outward in a fraction of a second. The white scabbard and hilt bloomed with their dark magatama seals, and the air around Shigeya grew heavy and water-logged as his overwhelming Reiatsu filled the space.
Shigeya's eyes shifted in an instant to a milky-white, the prominent veins bulging around his temples as the Byakugan's terrifying 360-degree spatial awareness locked onto every single person in the yard.
The older trainee who had spoken out gasped, stumbling backward a full step as the crushing, suffocating weight of the boy's spiritual pressure slammed directly into his chest, cutting off his breath. The entire courtyard stared in absolute, paralyzing horror. The bone-white Shikai gleamed with terrifying clarity, an undeniable proof of mastery that seasoned adults spent decades failing to achieve.
Shigeya didn't draw the blade. He simply held it at his side, letting the sheer, oppressive magnitude of his power speak for itself.
The silence in the courtyard was absolute.
With a mental command, Shigeya reeled his Reiatsu back in, the pressure vanishing as quickly as it had appeared. His eyes shifted back to deep midnight blue, and the veins faded away. He stood straight, looking up at the wide-eyed, pale-faced student who had just questioned him.
Yamamoto turned back to the frozen ranks of the academy, a deep, satisfied smirk hidden beneath his fierce mustache.
"Class is in session," Yamamoto rumbled, stepping back into the dojo. "Do not expect him to pull his punches."
