Chapter Text
Power came easily to Hermione now but wielding it required finesse.
A week had passed since her arrival, and already the dynamics of Slytherin House had begun to shift. Her presence graceful and aloof, poised yet dangerous unsettled the social hierarchy like a sharp knife under silk.
The older students didn’t know what to make of her. She wasn’t vying for attention. She didn’t flirt, didn’t boast, didn’t align herself with any of the traditional Slytherin cliques. And yet, she was everywhere.
She was seen correcting sixth-year Arithmancy equations with quiet precision. Advising the younger Slytherins in the common room. Quoting blood magic theory in class that even Professor Slughorn had to cross-check.
She wasn’t trying to take control of Slytherin House.
She simply was.

The common room glowed dimly one evening, green light casting ripples across the carved stone walls. The air was rich with murmured spells and firewhisky laughter from the older students.
Hermione sat beside Regulus on a velvet chaise, parchment spread across their laps. Her tone was calm, like a tutor mid-lecture.
“This symbol,” she murmured, tapping an ancient rune etched into the Black family grimoire, “means devotion. It’s used in blood-binding oaths. I found it again in the margins of a ritual Voldemort uses to brand his followers.”
Regulus stiffened beside her. His quill still.
“You’ve seen it?” she asked softly.
He hesitated.
Then, with the kind of honesty that cost boys their futures in Slytherin, he nodded. “He showed it to us. Yaxley, Rosier, and I said it was only a matter of time before we were ‘worthy’.”
Hermione's hand curled into a fist.
“You don’t have to be marked,” she said. “You have a choice.”
Regulus looked at her then truly looked at her. “Do I? Our father wants me to serve. My friends expect it. And Voldemort, he doesn’t forget a face.”
“I know,” she said quietly. “But you forget who I am. I’ve seen how this ends.”
His brow furrowed. “What?”
She rose, gathering the scrolls. “Don’t follow a madman into hell, Regulus. There’s more power in saving your soul than in selling it.”
He didn’t reply. But his eyes followed her long after she left the room.

Later that night, she found herself in the Astronomy Tower, alone.
The stars above were pinpricks of frost across a velvet sky, cold and ancient. She whispered a spell under her breath, and a spectral parchment appeared of her own creation, inked in invisible runes, pulsing with soft light.
It was a map of connections. Names. Power. Loyalties. She had begun tracking them already.
Lucius Malfoy – Ambition
Severus Snape – Uncommitted
Regulus Black – At risk
Bellatrix Lestrange – Already gone
Rodolphus Lestrange – Dangerous
Narcissa Black – Watchful
She tapped Malfoy’s name and watched a ripple move across the map.
Lucius had taken notice of her.

She didn’t have to wait long.
The next evening, he cornered her in the library in an elegant ambush.
“Hermione,” he drawled, the corners of his mouth lifted in the kind of smile meant for duels, not friendships.
“Lucius,” she returned coolly, not looking up from her book on magical lineage reconstruction.
“I hear you’ve taken quite the interest in blood magic,” he said, voice soft and poisonous.
“I’m a Black. Of course I have.”
He stepped closer. “You’ve caused quite the ripple since your return. Regulus hangs on your every word. Severus defends you in class. Even Potter seems….intrigued.”
Hermione closed the book slowly.
“If you’re implying I’m building a court, I assure you I don’t need one.”
Lucius leaned in, his pale eyes gleaming. “Oh, but you are. Whether you intend it or not. And in Slytherin, power attracts enemies. I’d watch my back.”
She met his gaze without flinching. “You first.”

The next day, a message arrived. Not by owl but by an enchanted ring.
A single whisper in her mind: He’s watching you. He knows you’re not one of them.
No name. No signature.
Hermione stared at the ring a Black heirloom with protective enchantments and tightened it on her finger.
So Voldemort was aware.
Good. Let him watch.
She would make him afraid of the Black name.

That night, Hermione unlocked a hidden passage in the dungeons using a charm only found in the oldest version of The Secrets of Salazar Slytherin. The air was cold, laced with damp magic. She walked until the corridor opened into a hidden chamber lined with silver script and buried spells.
There, she began her work.
A ritual to restore the original protections on the Black family line stripped away by generations of bloodlust and arrogance. A spell to shield Regulus. A charm to sever magical compulsion. She worked until dawn, her hands bleeding, her magic humming like a thunderstorm in her ve ,ins.
And when she emerged, the first stone had shifted.
Regulus would not wear the Dark Mark.
And the war, this time, would start differently.
