Chapter Text
Obi Wan felt lighter the closer he got to Cody’s place. He pulled up to the house and was surprised to see the door open and Cody’s silhouette haloed by the light within. The rain continued, thick black clouds hovered overhead as Obi Wan dived up the path, rummaging through his bag.
“You’re not going to fucking believe who I just…” He paused, halfway up the path, realizing too late that Cody wasn’t alone. Cody smiled wildly at him. “I’m so sorry. I can come back later…”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” Cody said, stepping out into the rain to pull him under the cover of the porch. “This is my brother Wolffe. Wolffe, Obi Wan.”
Obi Wan smiled in surprise but held out his hand all the same. “It’s lovely to meet you.”
Wolffe took his hand and gave it one pump before dropping it. “You too.” His voice was gruff, not warm like Cody’s. Obi Wan hadn’t been close enough before to notice a scar over his right eye that made the eyelid look like it had fallen slightly. His dark hair, so much like Cody’s was shaved on the sides and thick on top, making him look a little taller than he probably was. The mutton chops he had noticed a few days ago were gone, replaced with a thick layer of stubble. His steely eyes looked Obi Wan up and down as his mouth rested into a distinct scowl.
“I can, um…leave you to it if you’d like.” Obi Wan said, crossing in front of Wolffe and making for the door.
“Hang on.” Cody said, grabbing him by the shoulder and pressing him into the doorframe as he kissed him deeply. Obi Wan heard Wolffe scoff but didn’t care as Cody’s arms wrapped around him tighter.
“Jesus Cody.” Wolffe grumbled.
Cody pulled away and grinned. “I think we’ve made Wolffe blush.” He said to Obi Wan triumphantly.
“Yes, well happy to be a prop for your brotherly feud, I suppose.” He replied with a pat to Cody’s cheek. “Tell him how you’re gunna fuck me up the ass later if you really want to make him mad.” Obi Wan said with a wink before he walked past Cody and into the house.
“He was the one you were…”
Obi Wan heard Cody sigh, “how many men do you think I go through in a week, Wolffe?”
“I thought your kind were pretty slutty.” Obi Wan heard him mutter.
It was Obi Wan’s turn to roll his eyes as he pulled the papers and laptop out of his bag. He knew this was a date. Likely his last date with Cody, at least for a while. But they needed to put some pieces together or…he didn’t even want to know what would happen.
The volume of the conversation had dropped now, but Obi Wan could still hear Cody’s tense voice and Wolffe’s grumbling. After another few minutes, the door closed and Cody found him in the kitchen.
“Hey, everything okay? I…”
Cody collided with him, holding his face in his hands as he kissed him ferociously. Obi Wan was breathless as he reciprocated, the piece of paper in his hand dropping to the floor as he threw his arms around Cody’s neck and pulled him closer. He tasted amazing. He smelled amazing. And suddenly all the stuff with Anakin and Palpatine didn’t seem nearly as important.
When Cody finally slowed his kisses and started to pull away, Obi Wan felt well and truly caught in his gaze. “Sorry.” He said softly. “The other kiss just…wasn’t good enough.”
Obi Wan chuckled, “bet it was enough to stress your brother out though.”
Cody laughed and nodded, leaning forward again slowly and capturing his lips like they were gilded. “Yes. But that wasn’t why I did it. I just…always want to kiss you.”
Obi Wan couldn’t help but smile. He always wanted to kiss Cody too. It was like a need instead of a want. Honestly he wondered if he’d be content to stay wrapped in Cody’s arms with his lips resting on his for eternity. But of course, it was too soon, too much, too everything for that.
“Well, it’s certainly the most pleasant part of my day.” Obi Wan mused as he went back to straightening his papers.
Cody nodded and fetched a couple of bottles of beer from the fridge, “How’d things go with Quin? Or dare I ask?”
Obi Wan chuckled and shook his head. “No, no. We sorted it out. As much as we can, anyway.”
“Did he manage to keep his hands off you this time?” Cody asked with thinly veiled disgust.
“You’re starting to sound like Satine. She always had distrust when it came to Quin.”
“Unfounded?” Cody asked with a raised eyebrow.
Obi Wan looked down at the floor. “No. I suppose not. Knowing what I know now.”
“What did she do about it?” Cody asked jovially.
“She dumped me.” Obi Wan replied plainly. “But it’s neither here nor there…I feel we spend way too much time talking about my ex’s. What about yours?”
“What about them?”
Obi Wan chuckled, “there was something about a firefighter, no?”
Cody chewed on his lip. “It’s not the same…”
“What isn’t?”
Cody crossed his arms over his chest. “My ex. Yours is still very much in the picture.”
“As a friend.”
Cody huffed. “Fine. His name was Gerrard. He works for the Yavin fire department. We were together for a year and a half. Broke up in February.”
“And?” Obi Wan asked, trying to mask his amusement.
Cody laughed, “and what?”
Obi Wan shrugged, “you know all the intimate and sordid details of my Exes’.”
“Some of your ex’s.” Cody corrected.
“Fine. Some. Now come on. Your turn, Chief.”
“There isn’t much to tell. We got on well. Met at an emergency preparedness event between four counties. He ended up being assigned to me as a victim. I had to pretend to give him mouth to mouth.”
“Oh?”
Cody’s lips twisted into a smile at the memory. “He pulled me into him when we were done pretending. Kissed me for real. Asked for my number.”
Obi Wan rested on the table and crossed his arms over his chest. “And what was he like?”
“What?”
“You know what my…”
Cody rolled his eyes. “It’s not the same. Quin’s been walking around this town like a wanton sex god since he was eighteen.”
Obi Wan laughed, “So, what was Gerrard like? Hansome, I assume? And fit? He’d have to be with that job, right?”
“You’re being ridiculous, Kenobi.” Obi Wan simply smiled at him and raised his eyebrows. “Yes, okay. He was fit. Amazing body, very handsome, brown eyes and blonde hair. He had something of an addictive personality. He was constantly getting a new hobby, obsessing over it for a few months and then dropping it. Fishing, hiking, biking, video games, he went through all of them…” Cody paused, suddenly looking bitter, “and then his last hobby was Kyle. A new guy at the station. We broke up when I found out.”
Obi Wan felt his brows creased with sudden concern. “I’m sorry. He was an idiot.”
“Yeah, well. It is what it is. And none of this answers my question.”
“Which was what?”
“Did your friend,” Cody put the word in air quotes, “decide to grope you again?”
Obi Wan chuckled and shook his head, coming over to Cody as he rested by the stove and brushing the front of his shirt. “No. But in the name of full disclosure, I did let him kiss me.” Cody had been sinking towards him when he paused and pulled back. Obi Wan took his eyes off of Cody’s shirt and tracked his gaze up to his eyes. “I know my relationship with Quin is…borderline codependent at worst and unusual at best…”
“Why would you let him kiss you after what he did? What he said?” Cody asked
Obi Wan huffed out a sigh, “It’s complicated and he’s my oldest friend…”
“He's still in love with you.” Cody asked incredulously.
Obi Wan took a step back, noticing the tension in the room. “Does it bother you that he is?”
“Of course it does, considering we’re…” Cody trailed off, his voice, once firm suddenly sounding timid.
“Considering we’re what?” Obi Wan asked as gently as he could.
Cody suddenly looked uncomfortable and moved to escape to the other side of the kitchen. “It doesn’t matter.” He mumbled as he busied himself with some papers on the counter that had a thin layer of dust on them.
“I think it does matter if this is your reaction.”
Cody glared at him. “Well, if your initial thought was to make out with him, maybe I’m a little off the mark. Why would you do that?”
“It was a goodbye of sorts, Cody. That’s all.” Obi Wan looked up, nervous to meet Cody’s eyes.
“And how was it?” Cody asked as if commenting on the weather.
Obi Wan rolled his eyes, “Cody…”
“I’m just asking…” Cody replied with an air of trying to be casual and failing.
Obi Wan stepped over to meet him, his hand moving from Cody’s shoulder to his jaw. “It was enlightening.” He muttered, his eyes flitting from Cody lips to his dark eyes.
“How so?” the Chief breathed softly.
“It didn’t feel the same.” Obi Wan replied, finding it impossible to look away from Cody’s handsome face. “Not as before.”
“Why’s that, do you think?” Cody asked.
Obi Wan leaned a little closer and looked up, reveling in Cody’s breath on his lips. “I think you know.”
“Tell me.” He said desperately.
Obi Wan chuckled and felt a tingle of desire go through him. “You’ve fucked me up so badly, Fett.” Obi Wan heard himself mutter.
“Oh? And how have I done that, Kenobi?” Cody asked, his warm hands reaching under Obi Wan’s shirt while he nuzzled his neck.
Obi Wan huffed out a breath and closed his eyes at the touch. “If it’s not you, I don’t want it.” He whispered.
Obi Wan expected Cody to surge forward, to push him into something, lay him on the table and fuck him. He expected the primal Chief to be released, he would have almost banked on it, but that didn’t happen.
When he opened his eyes, Cody was gazing up at him with an unbridled look of shock on his face. Obi Wan was suddenly aware that maybe he’d said too much, given too much away. This was a situationship, at best, and he’d allowed a crack in the visage, a glimpse of his soul, and God, what if it was too much? What if it was unwanted?
Obi Wan opened his mouth to negate it, to find a way to take it back somehow, although even with his verbose vocabulary he couldn’t think of a single thing that would undo what he’d just done.
“I…” he started, having no idea how the sentence would end. But before he could, Cody leaned forward and captured his lips. Obi Wan still didn’t know how he felt, hadn’t be able to read Cody enough to know. Cody’s hands went to his face, kissing him ferociously as he held him in place, kissing him faster and faster until he could barely breathe.
He felt the Chief’s hands wrap around his back, slipping down to his ass. Their lips broke apart and before he could think of anything to say, Cody had lowered himself to his chest, grabbed Obi Wan around the ass and thrown him over his left shoulder.
“What the fuck, Fett?” Obi Wan asked with a laugh.
“If you think you can say shit like that to me and not have me give you the best fuck of your life, you’ve got another thing coming, Kenobi.”
Obi Wan laughed as Cody practically ran up the stairs, charged into his bedroom and threw Obi Wan on the bed. He landed in the comfort of the soft sheets that smelled like Cody in the most intoxicating way.
Obi Wan’s heart was pulsing in his neck. He felt light, and happy, and as usual when in Cody’s presence, immeasurably turned on. Cody unbuttoned his pants before crawling up Obi Wan like a tiger stalking his prey. His shoulders looked broad, his face hungry.
Obi Wan propped himself up on his elbows. He just liked to watch. By all rights, Cody should have moved like most cops, jerky and ridged, but he moved like a dancer, everything was fluid. Obi Wan wasn’t sure if there was some kind of transformation that Cody endured when he moved over the threshold of the bedroom, but whatever the reason, he enjoyed the outcome no end. Cody rolled his hips when he climbed on top of him and cupped his face gently, like he was a precious thing, an idol, a talisman.
“What are you thinking about?” Cody asked as he pressed his weight into Obi Wan’s chest, his lips digging into his jugular.
God, Obi Wan was so tempted to spill his guts. To say all the things he never thought he could say to another living being, not even Quinlan. But he couldn’t do that, not now. It felt too much somehow, too vulnerable, too intense. He knew Cody felt something for him. He could feel it in the way he looked at him, in the way he had pined for him when they were young. It almost felt wrong, to rip away the idealized version of himself and give him what truly existed, the mess, the trauma. How could he ever want that when the fantasy was so much better.
“Nothing.” Obi Wan said, shaking his overwhelming thoughts away for a time when he was alone in darkness. “Just you.”
Cody pounced on him, pulling him up off the bed just enough to get his arms underneath him. His grip was tight as he held him, almost painful until he released him enough to move his hands under his clothes.
Obi Wan worked on the buttons of Cody’s shirt while Cody pushed into him, giving him a challenge well worth winning. He pulled away enough to take a breath.
“Breathless already, Kenobi?” Cody challenged with a chuckle.
“You fucking wish, Fett.” He muttered as he got the last button undone and wrenched off his shirt over his thick shoulders and arms. He licked Cody’s tattoo from his pectoral to his clavicle and heard the Chief of police start to come undone. Obi Wan liked this part. The push and pull, the dominance and submission they both wielded to get the other off. Cody, for all his decisiveness and power to start with, didn’t always want to be in charge at the end, at least in Obi Wan’s experience, and there was something immensely sexy about that.
Obi Wan pushed Cody off of him slowly, gradually moving into a sitting position so Cody was hovering at the end of the bed. When he opened his mouth to question him, Obi Wan grinned.
“You’re wearing too many clothes, Chief.”
Cody chuckled. “I’m not sure how I feel about you using my title in bed.”
“No?” Obi Wan asked, running his hands over Cody’s bare chest and tracing his fingers gingerly under his waistband. “Why’s that, Chief?”
Cody’s eyes were fluttering at the contact, his lips wet and parted as he tried to form a coherent thought. “I…I dunno…I just…”
Obi Wan’s fingers moved lower, dancing through the happy trail that led to his target. Cody moaned, his erection straining at his jeans. Even with his button undone, he needed more space and Obi Wan was determined to make him wait until he was aching for it.
There was a small part of him, buried so deep he was barely conscious of it, that knew he was using sex, particularly sex that he was in charge of, to shove away his discomfort about his feelings. Because he’d already come so close to confessing, to telling Cody what he was feeling, and to Obi Wan, a man who couldn’t even admit his feelings to himself, that was terrifying, and so he did what he had always done, he initiated sex in which he was in control. Because if he was in control, his mask couldn’t slip.
He moved an inch lower with the fingers of his right hand while his left reach around, into Cody’s jeans and boxers and cupped a large portion of his ass. Cody hissed this time and Obi Wan was thoroughly enjoying his front row seat to the show.
“What are you doing?” Cody asked with a shuddering breath.
“I’m gunna make you wait for it, Chief. Until you’re screaming my name and begging to fuck me. And then, and only then, will you get me out of my pants.”
Cody chuckled and ran his hands through Obi Wan’s hair, “I could just scream your name now…”
Obi Wan unzipped Cody’s jeans, refusing to make eye contact to draw out the desperation. “I suppose you could but…I’ll know…”
Cody half scoffed until Obi Wan’s fingers moved lower.
“Do you want something, Chief?” Obi Wan asked cooly.
“Obi Wan…”
“I’m sorry, Chief, I can’t hear you.”
“God, I want to fuck you.” Cody growled impatiently.
Obi Wan slowly peeled Cody’s jeans down but left his boxers in place. “How many rounds do you have in you tonight?” Obi Wan asked, starting to lose patience with his own line of questioning. He leaned forward and mouthed Cody’s package through his shorts.
“Holy shit.” Cody muttered as his hand reached into Obi Wan’s hair with the perfect level of grip. “I’ll go as many times as you’ll let me.” Cody sighed as his legs started to wobble.
Obi Wan knew it was now or never, if he took Cody much longer he might miss the show entirely given the way his eyes were squeezed shut, his head tilted back to the ceiling, his hand tugging at Obi Wan’s scalp in waves. Obi Wan finally pulled off Cody’s boxer and smiled.
“What’s got you turned on so much this evening, Chief.” Obi Wan threw out with a chuckle.
“You’re such a fucking asshole, Kenobi.”
“Oh?” he asked as he gently licked his tip.
“Fuck…okay, okay, you…God, Obi Wan…you want me…you want me more than Vos…” Cody groaned.
Obi Wan noticed a little drizzle escape Cody and was oddly charmed by it. Instead of a reply, because honestly, he wasn’t sure what he would have said, he took Cody in his mouth and slid slowly down his shaft.
Cody let out a garbled groan at the contact and Obi Wan smiled. God he loved this part, the power he had to make a man come completely undone. He cupped Cody’s ass with one hand while the other traced little circles on his inner thigh, the hypnotic motion mirrored in the faint movement of Cody’s hips.
As turned on as he knew Cody was, he was almost there himself. There was something about the anticipation, the building up of the intimacy. The banter, the cursing, all of it made the hair on the back of Obi Wan’s neck stand on end, and when Cody finally let out an earth-shattering scream that echoed through the house, it was Obi Wan’s name he called as he slumped over on top of him, cocooning him between his hard body and softening cock.
“Holy fucking shit.” Cody babbled as Obi Wan finally released him.
“Hmm.” Obi Wan murmured as he fell back onto the bed and licked his lips lasciviously.
Cody took a few deep breaths and pulled his clothes from his ankles before resting next to him completely naked. He leaned over and kissed his forcefully, his limp dick warm against Obi Wan’s thigh. “Give me five minutes and I’m gunna make you pay for that.”
“Pay for that? I was doing you a service, wasn’t I?” he replied with a chuckle.
Cody turned on his side and cupped Obi Wan’s face in his hands. His eyes searched his face, his thumbs brushing the soft hair of Obi Wan’s beard. “Did you mean it?” Cody asked meekly.
“The blow job? Yes, it was very deliberate.” Obi Wan said with a chuckle.
Cody shook his head, his features set and serious. “You know what I mean. Did you…”
Obi Wan felt himself blush under Cody’s intense gaze and leaned forward. “I’m afraid so.” He muttered into Cody’s lips.
Cody laughed in disbelief. “I’ve never wanted anyone more than you.” Cody said with startling honesty.
“Not even your firefighter?” Obi Wan suggested.
Cody shook his head, “No. Just you.”
Obi Wan kissed him gently and brushed his fingers over his lips. “This has disaster written all over it. Doesn’t it?”
Cody rolled his eyes, “What makes you say that?”
“Experience. Chance. Fate.”
Cody nuzzled into his neck, “We make our own fate, Obi Wan.”
“I live in a different city…”
“It’s only four hours away…”
“Five.” Obi Wan corrected.
“You’re worth a ten hour drive, Obi Wan. But we can talk about this later.”
Now it was Obi Wan’s turn to roll his eyes. “Later? I leave tomorrow.”
“For the time being. Stop trying to sabotage it and just relax.” Cody replied, his hand tracing down Obi Wan’s back and lifting his shirt up and over his head.
“Smooth, Chief.”
Cody chuckled, “Yeah, still not sure how I feel about that. I think I prefer Fett.”
“Really?” Obi Wan replied with a raised eyebrow.
“Hmm…the way you say it, anyway.”
Obi Wan chuckled and rolled on top of him. “You want to fuck me, Fett?”
“Absolutely.” Cody replied, his erection refreshed and blatant beneath Obi Wan as his hands went to pull down his pants.
“Well, you’re gunna have to wait.” Obi Wan said with a grin as he sat up and scootched to the end of the bed.
“What?” Cody asked in disbelief.
“If my clothes come off they won’t go back on until morning and we still have a shit ton of work to do. I need to share with you what I found out, and I can’t do that if your cock is staring at me.” Obi Wan picked up Cody’s discarded boxers and threw them at him.
Cody clasped the underwear to his chest and flopped back onto the bed. “You can’t be serious.”
“As a heart attack. Come on, Chief. Duty calls.” Obi Wan said with aplomb.
Cody groaned as he got off the bed. “Fine.” He muttered sourly.
Obi Wan hurried downstairs, grinning in triumph as Cody murmured under his breath. He went back over to his files and finished pulling them out of his bag. His laptop had timed out and he had to restart it.
“You know it’s funny we…” he looked up to find Cody wandering around the kitchen in his boxers and nothing else. “Oh, come on, Fett. How is that fair?”
Cody looked down at himself and grinned, “my cock’s not staring at you, right?”
Obi Wan’s eyes lingered at the front of Cody’s boxers and noticed a twitch. “You did that on purpose.”
Cody chuckled, “would I?”
“You’d probably crack walnut with your thighs if you thought it would get me naked, Fett.”
Cody grinned and Obi Wan knew he liked that he was getting a reaction. “Now, that’s a good idea. I think I have some walnuts around here somewhere.” He said, diving into one of the cupboards.
Obi Wan rolled his eyes and turned away, stripping off pants and proudly standing in the kitchen in his underwear as well. When Cody turned around he froze. “It works both ways, Fett.” Obi Wan said with a grin as he deliberately reached over the table to grab something.
“Fuck…” he heard Cody whisper.
“Of course, we could call a truce and put our clothes back on…”
“You think I want to lose this view?” Cody asked with a grin.
Obi Wan shrugged and settled into a seat at the table, the wood chair was cold on his thighs, and his nipples were hard enough to cut glass, but there was no way he was going to give up the challenge.
Cody settled into the seat opposite and smirked at him. “You wanna tell me what’s so important that I don’t get to have my way with you immediately.”
Obi Wan smiled and lowered the top of his laptop. “I did quite a lot of research on our friend, Palpatine yesterday. But what is more interesting is that when I got home from Quin’s, both Anakin and Palpatine were in my father’s house having a hushed conversation.”
“What?” Cody asked, suddenly serious. The dichotomy of his ‘Chief’ face while he was practically naked wasn’t lost on Obi Wan. “What the fuck was he doing there?”
Obi Wan shrugged, “I didn’t hang around to ask the question, but my notes were spread out on the dining table…”
Obi Wan noticed Cody’s face drain of color. “Fuck.”
“Don’t worry, none of it could have been linked back to you, even if he did read it…” Obi Wan said quickly, reaching across the table and taking hold of Cody’s hand. The Chief tilted his head to the side softly and smiled. “Thanks.”
Obi Wan nodded. “It makes sense that if there’s someone he can come after, it’s me.”
Cody rolled his eyes. “I still doubt he’s involved. He’s a septuagenarian for God’s sake. He probably spends his evenings falling asleep in a rocking chair.”
“The more I find out about him, the less I know. More importantly, my dad was involved in protests for the bypass…”
“Obi Wan, that was almost eight years ago. Why would someone wait until now to kill him. He certainly wasn’t the only one opposed.”
“I dunno. I definitely think this is the reason though. The proposed route would have meant my father’s house and most of the places on our street would be demolished.”
Cody scratched at the stubble on his chin, “well if that’s the case there must be some kind of letter. The process didn’t get far but I think most residents got a letter asking if they’d be willing to sell their house. Maybe your father got one too.”
“Hmm…I’ll have to check when I get back.” Cody looked over at him, opened his mouth to speak before closing it again. “What is it?” Obi Wan chuckled.
“No. Nothing.” Cody said as he got up and found the rest of his beer on the counter. He threw his head back and chugged it, slamming the empty bottle on the side with a sigh. Obi Wan blinked at him.
Cody looked around the room evasively before his eyes finally found their way back to Obi Wan. “You know, you can put a clause in a real estate contract that the house can’t be pulled down or sold for industrial use. We ended up doing that for Jango’s home when we all finally left.”
Obi Wan stood up without realizing, “Holy shit. That’s it.”
Cody looked alarmed and stepped forward as Obi Wan dived on his computer and searched through his email.
“What the fuck are you doing?”
Obi Wan shook his head until he came upon the email. “I met with my father’s lawyer. I’m still in his will…”
“So?”
“So, Anakin expected to be the executor of the will. Thought everything would go to him and Soka…”
“I’m still not following.” Cody said, standing closer than even and smelling intoxicatingly of sex, sweat, and a cologne Obi Wan hadn’t been able to place yet.
“Anakin asked about the house. Is mad that I’m responsible for the division of assets and the…”
“Holy shit. You think he was going to sell it?”
“To Palpatine. Yes, yes I do. And then he’ll get his government job and nice new place and…”
“Fuck, that’s dark. If Palpatine was involved do you think Anakin is aware?”
Obi Wan shook his head automatically and then paused. In all honestly did he wasn't sure he knew his brother well enough to make that judgement call? “I’m…No, I’m sure he’s not.” He said slowly.
Cody was wandering out of the kitchen to the stairs.
“Where are you going?” Obi Wan asked.
“I’m gunna make a call. Have the boys dig into this…”
“Wait.” Obi Wan said, skidding into the living room, “maybe we should look into it first, just in case.”
Cody paused on the stairs. “Obi Wan, it’s a good theory, we have to…”
“This was supposed to help my brother get out of trouble, not get him into more.” Obi Wan replied exasperated.
Cody looked up the stairs before turning around and coming back to Obi Wan. He brushed his hair off his face and wrapped his arms around his waist. “I know how much this means to you. And how hard you’ve worked. But…what if you don’t like the answer, would you tell me?”
Obi Wan stepped back like Cody had slapped him. “I’m here aren’t I?”
“You’re trying to find an alibi for your brother.”
“He’s not guilty.”
“Obi Wan…you…you don’t know that. You don’t know him. Just like you didn’t know your father in the end.” Cody clapped his hand over his mouth as soon as he said it, but the damage was already done.
Obi Wan turned around and stormed to the kitchen, slamming his laptop shut, throwing it and all his evidence in his bag. He pulled on his pants and almost collided with Cody as he walked through the threshold and pounded up the stairs.
“What are you doing?” he heard Cody call from below.
Obi Wan could feel bile in the back of his throat and tears prickling in his eyes and if he didn’t get out of the house now, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to before all the emotions he was feeling overwhelmed him.
He picked his shirt off the end of the bed and threw it on, looking around at Cody’s room longingly but knowing he couldn’t stay. Not now.
He huffed as he pulled his bag over his shoulder again and this time collided with Cody in the bedroom doorway.
“I’m sorry.” Cody said in a rush and Obi Wan touched his chest to push him away and felt an ache. “Obi Wan, I’m sorry. I was an asshole, I shouldn’t have…”
“It’s fine.” Obi Wan said, his voice hollow, devoid of the emotions that were swirling inside of him. “I’m gunna go.”
“Obi Wan, no. Come on.” Obi Wan heard Cody charge down the stairs after him and reached for the door as Cody pushed it closed. “Please don’t do this. Please. I’m so sorry. It was a horrible thing to say. I was just…in cop mode and I…”
“It’s fine, Fett.” Obi Wan replied, finally risking a final look at Cody. “Maybe I’ll see you around.”
He pulled open the door and walked to his car. It had started raining again, that light rain that doesn’t look like much until you’re caught in it and then you’re half drowned. Obi Wan threw his bag on the passenger seat and started the engine, seeing the silhouette of Cody in his boxers staring from the door.
Obi Wan felt his lip wobble and shook his head. Nodded to himself in affirmation and reversed onto the dark road.
He wanted to go and see Quin, but after their earlier conversation he wasn’t sure that was right. Lumi’s store would be open for another hour and a half. Maybe he could go there. It was peaceful and he could update her on things with Quin and try and distract himself from this gnawing hole inside of him.
He turned right to get to Mainstreet and flinched as he saw a bright yellow car run the stop sign, knowing what was going to happen before it did. The driver plowed into his driver’s side. Obi Wan hit his head on the steering wheel and groaned as he tasted blood. His lip was bleeding along with a deep gash on his forehead. He reached for his phone to call…someone. He blinked into the darkness and felt his stomach drop as he heard a car’s engines rev again. The yellow car had turned around. He yelped as he tried to move, but he was stuck between the mangled plastic of the instrument panel. A heavily tattooed man leered at him through the windshield as the car sped at him again. The hit this time rocked the whole vehicle onto two wheels and forced the airbags to deploy, knocking his head back into the headrest. He heard the yellow car’s engine roar as it took off, while his teetered on the edge of a ravine that fed the river that went through the main park in town.
Obi Wan’s phone had fallen into the footwell. He unbuckled, trying to reach it when the car started to creek. He tensed as he felt the car lose its battle with gravity. It rolled, with Obi Wan hitting the ceiling and instrument panel in quick succession, over and over again until it finally came to rest and the car settled with a hiss and squeal of crushed metal. There was pain radiating through his whole body. He could feel his arm sticking out at an odd angle and couldn’t move his knee which seemed to be wedged.
The blood was flowing into his eye. While his vision became blotchy. He reached for his phone once more but couldn’t keep his eyes open and he slowly lost consciousness to the sound of his cars wheel squeaking as they rotated in the air, the dribble of water that was trickling through the broken windows, and the sound of his own pounding heartbeat.
I wonder if this is how my father felt, Obi Wan thought as blackness took him.
