Chapter 1: The Water Picker Uppers

Chapter Text

0500, the alarm clock set off, ripping Nene from a peaceful sleep. She mumbled, still half asleep.

You know how sometimes you have a great dream, then forget it right after you wake up? That happened to Nene today.

She rubbed her eyes open. She tried to remember something from her dream. It was wonderful, like being in Wonderland, being happy, and having no regrets. Just living in the present, not the past.

While trying to remember, a pair of bright, playful amber eyes that seemed to flashed in her eyes. But no matter how she tried, nothing about who they belonged to came to her mind. Maybe she would find them when she went to the tryout.

The tryout was tomorrow. Nene got giddy and feeling of throwing up at the same time when she thought of it.

She wondered who would be there.

Nene’s day went pretty normal, she did her chores and headed to school. There was no homework today because it was the last week of school. She went out with Aoi, her best friend to celebrate making it to the tryouts.

It was normal until she checked her emails, because Aoi and Akane had to do something. Nene knew something was going on between them, but she didn’t want to interfere in her friends life. They had been arguing a bit lately, Nene hoped that they might have gone away to talk it out.

She was deleting some junk mail, when a new message popped up, it was from the school. Nene clicked on it to see what it said, it was probably something about the last week of school. She opened it and almost screamed.

A new student was joining their school! Bring in a small suburban, close to urban town, that no one came to for some reason, getting a new student was rare. She had to tell Aoi about this.

Just then the waiter came with their order, spilling a bit of water on her.

Nene jumped up, leaving her wet seat to get less water on her. The waiter immediately apologized. Nene met the waiter’s eyes and time seemed to stop for a moment, something about his eyes just made her try to remember something long gone. He had bright amber eyes that seemed to jump around the restaurant looking for an escape route.

Just then Aoi returned. She stopped to process what she was seeing. Nene standing in front of a waiter that seemed ready to escape and a wet table, the water was dripping onto the bench. They were doing nothing. Just standing there.

The boy had to be a new waiter he looked young, maybe around nene’s age. A bit older perhaps.

Aoi rushed over to the table, grabbing a handkerchief out of her purse.

“ What are you doing?” Aoi asked the boy slightly astonished, “Get a tablecloth and help me with this.”

“ A tablecloth?” He said it like he was genuinely confused.

Aoi looked up at the little restaurant’s ceiling, as if she was rethinking her life choices.

“ Mother fuq. “ She whispered, then turned to him, “ You know what I mean.”

“ Oh.” He said as if he finally figured out how to think. “ Oh my god I’m so sorry” He ran to the storage cabinet.

Why had he stopped, just because those red eyes reminded him of something, was not something to get fired over.

Suddenly a voice came from behind him. “ Can you get a table- wait no a napkin… ugh.” She groaned. “ The water picker upper.”

Ruby red eyes was behind him. He stopped suddenly.

“ Water picker uppers?” He laughed, his amber eyes glowing with amusement.

Nene’s faced flushed with embarrassment.

He opened the door to the cabinet and grabbed a towel.

“ Here you go.”

He handed her a towel.

“ Thanks.”

She ran back to the table and started helping Aoi clean up the spill. They were doing that for barely a minute when someone showed up. It was store manager.

The old man bowed and apologized, “ We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience to your meal, so in apologies we have fired the employee who injured you.”

What he hadn’t injured me? Maybe they thought it was the water? She was going to say something, but something about the old man’s expression told her she had to accept this.

She parted ways with Aoi and Akane kun. The tryout was tomorrow and she was going to get in, she was going to find so many other girls with cankles and give them hope that they sent aline. She’s going to make it big.
