Chapter Text
The moonlight filtering through the window was weak, a sliver of pallid light that did nothing to warm the chill spreading through Claire's veins. She sat on the edge of their bed, the silk sheets a familiar comfort that now felt like a shroud. The air in the room, once scented with lavender and their shared affection, was thick, heavy with a wrongness that clung to the back of her throat.
Rei stood before her, a silhouette carved from shadows and malevolence. The lamplight caught the sharp angles of her face, the glint in her dark eyes that was no longer the warm, loving look Claire knew, but something predatory, foreign. It was the magic, the black magic she had summoned to bring Mei back, a corrupting tide that had washed away the woman she loved and left this stranger in her place.
"Look at me, Claire," Rei's voice was a low murmur, yet it sliced through the silence. It lacked its usual melody, replaced by a flat, demanding tone.
Claire lifted her head, her own blue eyes wide with a mixture of fear and desperate hope. "Rei... please. Fight it. This isn't you."
A cruel smile twisted Rei's lips. "Oh, but it is. This is the stronger me. The me who understands what I want. And what I want," she paused, stepping closer, her hand rising to hover just above Claire's cheek, close enough to feel the heat radiating from her skin, "is you. Completely."
When Claire tried to summon a flicker of her fire magic, a warming flame in her palm, it sputtered and died instantly. An unseen pressure clamped down on her, a cold, oppressive weight from Rei. The dark magic coiled around her like a serpent, squeezing the very breath from her lungs and snuffing out her power. Panic, cold and sharp, lanced through her.
"You won't be needing that," Rei said, her smile widening as she watched Claire's failed attempt. "From now on, your only purpose is to please me. You will be my toy, my plaything. You will learn a new set of rules, and you will obey them without question."
Her fingers finally made contact, tracing the line of Claire's jaw with a touch that was both possessive and devoid of affection. "If you defy me, even in the smallest way, I will strip you naked and parade you in front of our daughters and your father. I will make you tell them every depraved thing I've done to you. Your life will become an unending performance of humiliation."
The threat hung in the air, a tangible horror. Claire's stomach churned, bile rising in her throat. The image of her father's face, of Aleah and Mei's confusion and fear, was a weapon more potent than any physical blow.
"Listen, Claire" Rei continued, her voice dropping to a husky whisper. "No money, no worries, no magic—I've crushed that pathetic flame of yours for good. You exist now for one reason: to serve me. You'll crawl, you'll fetch, you'll keep your eyes down, and if I so much as catch a flicker of defiance, I'll make your life a living misery. Remember when you ruled over me? That's the joke. The punchline? Today, every breath you take is mine to permit or cut short. So kneel, and pray I find you useful. Because useless things? I dispose of them. Do you understand?"
Claire's lips trembled. She wanted to scream, to fight, to run. But the image of her family, the suffocating pressure of the dark magic, held her captive. A single, hot tear escaped and traced a path down her cheek. She gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.
"Good," Rei purred, the sound a dark purr of satisfaction. "Let's begin."
Rei pushed Claire back onto the bed, the motion sudden and forceful. The silk sheets rustled as Claire landed, her body bouncing slightly. Before she could even process the movement, Rei was on her, straddling her hips, her weight pinning her down. The look in her eyes was one of pure, unadulterated ownership.
"No," Claire choked out, her hands coming up to push against Rei's shoulders.
Rei caught her wrists easily, her grip like iron. She slammed them down on either side of Claire's head, pinning them to the mattress. "No?" she mocked, leaning down until their faces were inches apart. "That word is no longer in your vocabulary. You will learn to beg, not to refuse."
With her free hand, Rei ripped open Claire's nightgown, the sound of tearing fabric sharp in the quiet room. The cool night air hit Claire's skin, and she shivered, but it was from fear, not cold. Rei's gaze raked over her exposed body, an assessment that made Claire feel like an object, a piece of meat.
"Beautiful," Rei breathed, though the compliment was devoid of any warmth. "All this fire, just waiting to be extinguished."
She lowered her head, and her mouth was a violation. She didn't kiss; she consumed. Her teeth nipped at Claire's lips, hard enough to make her gasp in pain, her tongue forcing its way in, claiming and dominating. It wasn't an act of passion, but of conquest.
Claire squeezed her eyes shut, trying to retreat somewhere inside herself, to find a corner of her mind that was still her own.
Rei's mouth left Claire's lips, trailing a wet, deliberate path down her neck, across her collarbone, pausing only to bite hard enough to leave a mark. Claire gasped, her body arching involuntarily—a betrayal she despised. Then Rei's lips found her breast, and without ceremony, she took the nipple into her mouth, sucking hard, greedily, as if she were nursing on Claire's very essence.
Claire's hands shot up, fingers threading into Rei's hair—not to pull her away, but to push, to resist, to find some leverage. She didn't want this. She didn't want to feel the shameful heat pooling low in her belly, the traitorous way her spine curved upward, offering more of herself to that relentless mouth. But her body, oblivious to her will, responded with obscene eagerness. Her nipples hardened under the wet, punishing suction, and a soft, mortifying moan escaped her throat before she could bite it back.
Rei chuckled against her skin, the vibration a cruel tease. "There she is," she murmured, her tongue flicking and circling, her teeth grazing just enough to make Claire tremble. "Your body knows who owns it, even if your mind is too stubborn to admit it."
Claire squeezed her eyes shut, her fingers tightening in Rei's dark hair, trying to anchor herself to defiance. But the sounds—the wet, obscene sounds of sucking and licking—filled the room, drowning every thought. Slurp. Click. Swallow. Each noise was a hammer against her resistance. Her hips began to move, shallow, helpless grinds against Rei's thigh, and she hated herself for it.
Rei switched to the other breast, giving it the same ruthless attention, her free hand kneading the first, twisting the tender peak until Claire bit her lip so hard she tasted blood. The pleasure was a wildfire she couldn't contain, spreading through her limbs, turning her bones to liquid. She felt her mind slipping, the edges of her consciousness blurring.
Minutes—or hours—passed. Claire lost count. The only reality was Rei's mouth, never ceasing, consuming her like she was a feast. The threat of humiliation, her daughters, her father—all faded into a distant, muffled noise. Her body surrendered completely, trembling, weeping with unwanted ecstasy.
And then, exhaustion took her. Her hands fell limp from Rei's head, her breathing slowed, and her eyes fluttered closed. She was too drained to fight, too shattered to even think. In the haze between waking and sleep, she felt Rei's lips still latched, still suckling, still taking—even as Claire drifted into unconsciousness, the wet sounds continued, relentless, as if Rei would never stop, as if she intended to devour Claire whole even in her dreams.
The last thing Claire heard, muffled and distant, was Rei's whisper against her skin: "Sleep, little toy. I'm not done with you yet."
---
The dawn light, thin as watered milk, seeped through the curtains. Claire stirred, a familiar heaviness in her limbs not from sleep but from exhaustion. Before her eyes could fully focus, a wet, insistent heat pressed between her legs. Rei. Her tongue, a practiced and cruel instrument, worked against Claire’s most sensitive flesh, lapping and swirling with a precision that bypassed pleasure and landed squarely in the realm of choreography. Claire squeezed her eyes shut, her body a vessel she no longer controlled. Her hands fisted in the sheets, knuckles white. She was not allowed to move, not allowed to make a sound beyond the soft whimpers Rei found amusing. A tremor ran through her, a raw, overstimulated response.
“Good morning, my pretty little toy,” Rei’s voice was a low purr against her thigh, the vibrations a fresh assault. “Did you sleep well? Or were you dreaming of my tongue inside you?”
Claire said nothing, her jaw tight. Rei’s fingers dug into her hips, holding her in place. The licking continued, relentless, for what felt like an eternity, until Claire’s body was a taut wire, slick with sweat and Rei’s saliva, trembling with an agonizing, forced release that left her feeling hollowed out, boneless. Rei finally lifted her head, her dark eyes gleaming with a satisfaction that curdled Claire’s stomach. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand.
“Get up,” Rei commanded, swinging her legs out of bed. “Breakfast. Don’t you dare look tired in front of the girls.”
Claire pushed herself up, every muscle protesting. She moved like an old woman to the bathroom, splashing cold water on her face, trying to wash away the lingering sensation of Rei’s mouth and the sting of humiliation. Her reflection was a stranger—pale, haunted, her blue eyes dull.
Downstairs, the smell of sizzling eggs and toast filled the kitchen. Mei and Aleah were already in their high chairs, babbling happily. Dole sat at the table, a newspaper in front of him. Rei moved with an unnerving domestic grace, flipping an egg. She glanced at Claire, a sharp, silent reminder. Claire slid into her seat, her gaze fixed on her plate. She forced a small smile when Mei gurgled and held out a piece of toast.
“Eat, Claire,” Rei said, placing a plate in front of her. The tone was light, almost sweet, but the underlying command was steel. “You’ll need your energy for later.”
The afternoon light was softer, golden. The house was quiet, the girls napping. In their bedroom, Rei sat on the edge of the bed, patting the space above her. Claire’s stomach dropped. She knew the position. She lay down on top of Rei, her body aligning with her wife’s, her breasts level with Rei’s face. It was the second performance of the day.
Rei’s hands roamed her back possessively before one came up to cup a breast, thumb brushing over the nipple until it pebbled. Then, her mouth closed over it, hot and greedy. The suckling was hard, demanding, her teeth grazing the sensitive skin just enough to make Claire flinch. Rei’s other hand slid down Claire’s stomach, pushing between her legs. Three fingers, then a fourth, forced their way inside her, a sudden, brutal stretch. Claire gasped, her body arching involuntarily.
“Still so tight for me,” Rei murmured against her breast, her voice muffled. She sucked harder, her tongue swirling, while her fingers pumped inside, curling, scraping. “I love how you fight it. That little clench. It’s like your body is begging for more.”
Pain lanced through Claire, sharp and deep. She bit her lip, tasting blood, trying to silence the cry building in her throat. Tears pricked her eyes, blurring Rei’s face, the sight of her dark head latched onto her breast a grotesque parody of intimacy. This went on for hours, the rhythmic sucking, the relentless intrusion, until Claire was dizzy with pain and a strange, sickening pleasure she loathed herself for feeling. When Rei finally released her, Claire’s breasts were tender, marked with faint red circles, and she ached between her legs.
“Go rest,” Rei said, pushing Claire off her with a casual shove. “You look exhausted. I’ll tell the girls their mommy isn’t feeling well.”
Night fell like a shroud. The house was asleep, but the bedroom was wide awake with terror. Rei’s magic, a dark, slick presence, coiled in the room, suppressing Claire’s fire until it was just a dying ember in her soul. The light from the lamp cast long, distorted shadows.
“On your hands and knees,” Rei’s voice was a whip-crack in the silence.
Claire obeyed, her body trembling. This was the worst part. The true torture. She heard Rei move behind her, then felt the slick, cool lubricant being poured over her, a perverted form of preparation. Then, a pressure at her entrance. Not fingers, but Rei’s entire hand. Claire choked on a sob, her whole body tensing.
“Relax, you stupid slut,” Rei snarled, her hand forcing its way inside, a slow, agonizing invasion. “Or this will hurt more.”
It hurt anyway. A blinding, tearing pain that stole her breath. Rei’s fist was inside her, moving now, twisting, a claim of ownership that was absolute. A light slap landed on her buttock, then another, the stinging blows a counterpoint to the deep, internal ache.
“Look at you,” Rei’s voice was a venomous whisper, her breath hot against Claire’s ear. “My beautiful fire magic user, on her knees like a bitch in heat. Taking my fist. You’re nothing but a hole for me to use. A toy. My toy.”
Claire’s arms gave out, her face pressing into the mattress, her screams muffled by the fabric. She could feel Rei’s cruel gaze on her back, on the way her body convulsed with each thrust. The degradation was worse than the pain, the words like acid, dissolving what little was left of her pride. She was a vessel, a thing, being used and broken. The cruelty radiating from Rei wasn’t just her own; it was a stench, a tangible aura of the black magic that had hollowed her out and filled the space with this monstrous hunger. It was selfish, greedy, taking without any thought of giving, finding satisfaction only in Claire’s complete and utter destruction.
When Rei was finally done, she pulled out with a wet, obscene sound. Claire didn’t move, couldn’t. She lay there, a broken doll, feeling the sticky wetness between her legs, the deep, throbbing pain, and the vast, empty coldness where her spirit used to be.
---
The household had become a place of quiet decay.
Dole noticed it first. Claire had always been slender, but now she was gaunt—her cheekbones sharp, her collarbones protruding, her wrists thin as twigs. She moved through the house like a ghost, her eyes hollow, her steps silent. She would spend hours in the bathroom, the water running, and when she emerged, her skin was red and raw from scrubbing.
She barely spoke. When she did, her voice was distant, as if she were speaking from far away. She would sit at the dinner table, pushing food around her plate, taking tiny bites that seemed to pain her. The twins would try to show her their drawings, and she would smile—a weak, broken smile—and murmur something soft before retreating to her room.
Dole's heart ached. He had seen many things in his long life, but he had never seen his daughter like this. She was fading, disappearing into herself.
Rei, on the other hand, seemed to be thriving.
She was always busy now—cooking, cleaning, tending to the house. But she was also doing something else. Dole had noticed the money. Rei would return from brief outings with envelopes of cash, and she had begun paying for things without explanation. He had asked her once, and she had simply smiled and said, "I'm helping some merchants with their books. They pay well."
But it was more than that. Dole had begun to realize just how much Rei was earning. It was more than both her and Claire's teaching salaries combined—far more. She had taken over all the household expenses, paying for everything without a word. The groceries, the bills, the girls' school fees—all of it came from Rei's pockets.
And then the school had sent word.
The headmistress had written a formal letter, then sent a messenger, then come in person. She wanted to know why Claire and Rei had not returned to their teaching positions. The students missed them. The administration was concerned.
Rei had handled it beautifully.
She had invited the headmistress in, her smile warm, her voice smooth. "We've been dealing with a family crisis," she said, her tone perfectly measured. "But I've made arrangements. I've hired two excellent substitute teachers to cover our classes—experienced, qualified, wonderful with children. I'm covering half their salaries myself, so the school won't be burdened. Claire and I will return when we're ready."
The headmistress had been impressed. "That's extraordinarily generous of you," she had said. "And the substitutes are wonderful. The children love them."
Rei had smiled, her violet eyes gleaming. "I want to make sure everything runs smoothly until we're back. Claire needs time to recover."
Dole had watched from the kitchen, his unease growing. He had seen the cold calculation in Rei's eyes, the subtle satisfaction. She wasn't doing this for the school. She wasn't doing this for Claire. She was making a point.
Later, he had tried to talk to Rei about it. "Maybe it would be good for you both to go back to teaching," he said, his voice cautious. "Teaching is noble work. It gives you purpose. It might help you both heal."
Rei had laughed—a cold, hollow sound. "Purpose? I have purpose. I'm keeping this family together. And the substitutes are doing a fine job. Better than Claire could right now."
Dole had opened his mouth to argue, but Rei's violet eyes had stopped him cold. There was something there—something ancient and cruel—that made his blood run cold.
---
He tried to explain everything to Misha and Yuu when they visited.
They sat in the living room, their faces grave, as Dole spoke. "Claire is wasting away," he said, his voice heavy. "She barely eats. She barely sleeps. She spends hours in the bathroom, scrubbing herself raw. And Rei—Rei is different. She's too focused. Too sharp. Too cold. She's handling everything—the house, the money, the school. She's even hired substitutes to take over their teaching positions. She's paying half their salaries."
Misha's brow furrowed. "But why would she do that?"
Dole shook his head. "I think... I think she's showing Claire that she's replaceable. That she doesn't need Claire. That anyone can do her job, take her place." His voice broke. "She's breaking her down. Slowly. Methodically."
Yuu leaned forward, her voice gentle. "Have you spoken to Claire? Asked her what's happening?"
"I've tried," Dole said, his voice shaking. "She won't tell me anything. She just shakes her head and looks away. It's like she's terrified of something. Terrified of Rei."
Misha and Yuu exchanged a worried glance. They had seen this before—the slow erosion of a person's spirit, the hollowing out of their will. It was the work of the darkness. They just didn't know how to stop it.
"There must be something we can do," Yuu said.
Dole shook his head, his eyes filling with tears. "I don't know. I've never felt so helpless. So powerless. I failed her. I failed all of them."
---
The twins had returned to school.
Dole had insisted. "They need normalcy," he had told Rei. "They need to be around other children. They need to laugh and play and forget about all of this."
Rei had agreed, her smile pleasant, her violet eyes gleaming. "Of course. You're right. They need to be children."
So Dole had taken them to school every morning and picked them up every afternoon. They would chatter in the carriage, their voices bright, their laughter filling the air. But when they returned home, their voices would quiet. They would look at their mothers with worried eyes.
"Mommy Claire looks so tired," Mei would whisper to Aleah.
"I know," Aleah would whisper back. "I heard Grandpa Dole say she's sick."
"What about Mommy Rei? She seems busy all the time."
Aleah would shrug, her small face troubled. "I don't know. But Mommy Claire is the one who scares me."
---
In the bedroom, Claire lay on the bed, her body aching. Rei was beside her, her hand tracing lazy patterns on her stomach.
"You've been crying again," Rei observed, her voice cold. "I can always tell. Your eyes are so red."
Claire didn't respond. She had stopped responding. It was easier that way.
Rei's hand moved lower, and Claire tensed. "Please," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Not tonight. I'm so tired."
Rei's violet eyes gleamed. "You're always tired. That's what happens when you're useless. When anyone can do your job. When you're replaceable."
Claire's tears spilled over. She knew what Rei was doing. She was reminding her, every day, that she had no value. That she could be discarded. That she was nothing.
"Say it," Rei commanded. "Say you're replaceable."
Claire's voice was broken, her spirit shattered. "I'm replaceable. I'm nothing."
Rei smiled, her violet eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "Good girl."
---
Later that night, Dole sat in the kitchen, staring at a glass of whiskey. Misha and Yuu had left, their faces grave. He had no answers. He had no solutions.
He only had the image of his daughter's hollow eyes, her fragile frame, her broken spirit. He had failed her. They had all failed her.
He heard a soft footstep and looked up. Claire was standing in the doorway, her nightgown hanging loosely on her thin frame.
"Papa," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Please don't worry about me. I'm fine."
Dole's heart ached. "You're not fine, Claire. I can see that. Please, talk to me. Let me help you."
Claire shook her head, a sad smile on her face. "No one can help me. I just have to... I just have to endure."
She turned and walked away, her steps silent, her spirit broken.
Dole watched her go, his eyes filling with tears. He had never felt so helpless. So powerless. So utterly defeated.
---
Something strange began to happen in the house.
Packages started arriving—elegant boxes wrapped in silk ribbons, delivered by couriers in fine livery. Rei would bring them inside with a bright smile, her violet eyes gleaming with satisfaction. She would set them on the table and call for Claire.
"Come, love. I have something for you."
Claire would emerge from the bedroom, her steps hesitant, her eyes hollow. She would watch as Rei opened the boxes, revealing exquisite dresses made of fine silk and velvet—the kind of clothing she hadn't worn since before the darkness took hold. There were jewelry boxes containing delicate necklaces and earrings, their gemstones catching the light. There were cosmetics—creams and powders and perfumes in beautiful glass bottles.
"You deserve beautiful things," Rei would say, her voice warm and sweet. "You've been through so much. I want to see you smile again."
Claire would stare at the gifts, her expression unreadable. She would force a smile—a weak, trembling thing—and whisper, "Thank you."
Rei would kiss her forehead, her violet eyes never leaving Claire's face. "My pleasure, my love."
---
Dole watched it all with cautious hope.
He had been so worried about Claire—her thinness, her hollow eyes, her silence. But perhaps Rei had turned a corner. Perhaps she was trying to heal their marriage, to bring Claire back to herself.
He mentioned it to Misha and Yuu during one of their visits. "I'm not sure what's happening," he admitted, "but Rei seems... different. She's buying Claire beautiful things. Dresses, jewelry, perfumes. She's being so gentle with her. Almost like she was before."
Misha raised an eyebrow. "That does sound promising. Perhaps the darkness is receding."
Yuu nodded, her expression thoughtful. "It's possible. Love can be a powerful force against darkness."
But Dole saw something else, too. The way Claire would flinch when Rei touched her. The way her smile never reached her eyes. The way she seemed to be playing a part—acting happy when she was clearly not.
He pushed the thought aside. He wanted to believe. He needed to believe.
---
The twins were delighted.
Rei came home one afternoon with two small boxes, wrapped in bright paper. She knelt down and handed them to Mei and Aleah, her smile warm and maternal.
"These are for my beautiful girls," she said, her voice sweet. "Open them."
Mei tore the paper off first, revealing a beautiful porcelain doll with golden hair and a delicate dress. She gasped, her eyes wide with joy. "Mommy Rei! She's beautiful!"
Aleah's box held a small music box that played a soft, tinkling melody when opened. She turned the little key, listening to the music, her face lighting up with delight.
"Thank you, Mommy Rei!" they both cried, throwing their arms around her.
Rei hugged them back, her violet eyes gleaming. "You deserve the world. Both of you."
Dole's heart swelled. This was the Rei he remembered—generous, loving, devoted to her family. He had been foolish to doubt her. People could change. They could heal.
He didn't see the way Claire's face fell when she saw the girls' joy. He didn't see the way her hands trembled as she watched Rei embrace them. He didn't see the fear in her eyes—the knowledge that this was a performance. A mask.
---
But in the bedroom, the mask slipped.
Claire had refused to eat dinner again. She had pushed the food around her plate, taking tiny bites, her appetite long since gone. Rei had watched her with a pleasant smile, saying nothing—until they were alone.
The door clicked shut behind them, and Rei's face changed.
"You didn't eat," she said, her voice cold and flat. "I worked hard on that meal. The girls ate. Dole ate. Only you couldn't manage a few bites?"
Claire backed away, her hands trembling. "I'm sorry—I tried—I just—"
"You try nothing," Rei snarled, advancing on her. "You starve yourself. You waste away. And you make me look like I'm not taking care of you."
She grabbed Claire's arm, her grip bruising. Claire gasped, her body tensing.
"Please," she whispered. "Please, I'll eat tomorrow. I promise."
Rei's violet eyes blazed. "You'll eat now."
She pushed Claire onto the bed, her body pressing down on her. Claire's dress was yanked up, exposing her thin thighs. Rei's hand found its way between her legs, her fingers rough and punishing.
"Every time you refuse to eat," Rei hissed, "I'm going to take what I want. And I won't be gentle."
Claire sobbed, her body trembling. She felt Rei's fingers inside her, felt the pleasure building despite everything. She squeezed her eyes shut, her tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Please—please—" she begged, her voice breaking.
"Please what?" Rei's voice was cold and cruel. "Please stop? Or please keep going?"
Claire couldn't speak. She could only lie there, her body limp, as Rei used her. The pleasure was unwanted, unstoppable. She felt herself building toward release, her body betraying her.
"Come for me," Rei commanded. "Come right now."
Claire shattered, her body convulsing, her cries muffled by her hand. She collapsed on the bed, her body shaking, her tears soaking the pillow.
Rei pulled back, wiping her hand on the sheets. She stood over Claire, her violet eyes cold.
"Now eat," she said. "Or next time, I won't stop until you're begging me to let you die."
---
The gifts continued to arrive. Every day, something new for Claire—silks, jewels, perfumes that cost more than most families earned in a month. Rei would present them with a warm smile, her violet eyes soft and loving.
"You deserve this," she would say, kissing Claire's cheek. "You've been so strong."
Claire would nod, her face pale, her eyes hollow. She would take the gifts and set them aside, her hands trembling. She knew what they were. Bandages. Masks. Distractions.
The family, however, saw only the surface. Dole watched Rei's generosity with cautious hope. The twins delighted in the gifts their mother brought them—new dresses, beautiful dolls, books filled with colorful pictures. Even Dole himself received small tokens: aged whiskey, a new leather-bound journal, a warm scarf for the coming winter.
"She's trying so hard," Dole said to Misha during one of her visits. "I was so worried, but she's really making an effort."
Misha nodded, though her eyes were thoughtful. "It's good that she's taking care of Claire. But..." She paused, unsure how to voice her unease.
"But what?" Dole asked.
Misha shook her head. "Nothing. I'm just happy to see things improving."
---
But things were not improving.
In the bedroom, the mask slipped every night.
Claire sat at the vanity, brushing her hair. Her reflection stared back at her—gaunt, hollow, a ghost of the woman she had once been. The expensive creams Rei had bought sat untouched on the table.
The door opened, and Rei entered. Her violet eyes were soft, her smile warm.
"Still getting ready?" she asked, her voice sweet. "I thought you'd be in bed by now."
Claire didn't respond. She kept brushing her hair, her movements mechanical.
Rei's smile didn't waver. She walked over and took the brush from Claire's hand, setting it down gently. Her hands settled on Claire's shoulders, kneading the tense muscles.
"You're so tense," she murmured. "You need to relax more."
Claire flinched, just slightly. Rei noticed. Her grip tightened.
"I said you need to relax," Rei repeated, her voice still sweet, but with an edge now. "You've been so stressed lately. It's not good for you."
Claire opened her mouth to speak, but no words came. She had stopped fighting. She had stopped hoping. It was easier to just accept.
Rei's hands moved to her neck, squeezing gently at first, then harder. Claire gasped, her eyes flying open.
"I want you to smile," Rei said, her voice soft and dangerous. "I want you to look happy. When you're with the family, when you're with the girls, when you're with Dole—you will smile. Do you understand?"
Claire nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Say it," Rei commanded. "Say 'I understand.'"
"I understand," Claire whispered, her voice broken.
Rei released her, stepping back. She smiled, warm and loving.
"Good girl," she said. "Now come to bed. We have a long day tomorrow."
---
The next day, Claire smiled.
She forced herself to smile through breakfast, through lunch, through dinner. She played with the girls, her voice soft and gentle. She helped Dole with the dishes, her hands steady despite the trembling in her heart.
But behind her eyes, there was nothing. She had learned to empty herself, to become a shell. It was the only way to survive.
Dole watched her with a mixture of relief and unease. She looked better—she was eating, she was smiling, she was engaging with the family. But there was something hollow about it, something rehearsed.
He pushed the thought aside. He wanted to believe.
---
The illusion held for weeks.
Rei continued to shower Claire with gifts, to show the family her "love." She hosted dinners, invited Misha and Yuu over, played the devoted wife.
But at night, the mask came off.
Claire would kneel on the bedroom floor, her body shaking, as Rei stood over her. The violet eyes blazed with cold amusement.
"You're doing so well," Rei would say, her voice soft and cruel. "The family is so happy. Dole has stopped worrying. The girls think I'm the best mother in the world."
She would reach down, grabbing Claire's chin, forcing her to look up.
"But we know the truth, don't we?" she would whisper. "We know what you really are. A toy. A plaything. Nothing more."
Claire's eyes were empty, her body limp.
"Yes," she would whisper. "I know."
Rei would smile, her fingers tracing Claire's cheek. "Good girl."
---
The cracks began to show.
One evening, Yuu noticed something. Claire was sitting on the couch, her smile in place, but her hands were trembling. She was gripping her own wrist, her nails digging into her skin.
Yuu sat down beside her, her voice gentle. "Claire, are you all right?"
Claire's smile wavered. "I'm fine. Just tired."
Yuu studied her for a moment, then reached out and touched her hand. Claire flinched, pulling away.
"I'm sorry," Claire said quickly. "I didn't mean—I'm just—"
"It's okay," Yuu said softly. "You don't have to explain."
But she noticed. She noticed the way Claire's eyes darted toward the door, the way she tensed whenever Rei entered the room. She noticed the masks, the smiles, the hollow laughter.
She said nothing. But she stored it away, waiting.
---
The gifts continued. The smiles continued. The lies continued.
And Claire continued to shatter, piece by piece, in the silence of the bedroom.
One night, she lay on the bed, her body aching, her mind numb. Rei was beside her, her hand stroking Claire's hair.
"You're so beautiful when you're broken," Rei murmured. "I could keep you like this forever."
Claire closed her eyes, her tears slipping down her cheeks. She had no strength left to fight. No hope left to hold onto.
She was nothing.
She was Rei's.
And she would never escape.
---
The mask had worked.
Dole had finally relaxed. He watched Rei prepare breakfast, her movements light, her smile genuine. He watched Claire sit at the table, eating her meal without complaint. He watched the twins laugh at their mother's jokes, their small faces bright with joy.
"I think they're going to be okay," he told Misha during his final visit before returning home. "Rei has really stepped up. Claire is looking better. The girls are happy."
Misha nodded, though her eyes were distant. "I'm glad to hear that."
Dole packed his things, his heart lighter than it had been in months. He hugged his daughter, kissing her forehead. "Take care of yourself, Claire. I'll be back to visit soon."
Claire smiled—a perfect, practiced smile. "I will, Papa. I promise."
He didn't see the way her hands trembled. He didn't see the way her eyes followed his back, pleading silently for him to stay. He didn't see the way Rei's hand tightened on Claire's waist, possessive and cold.
The door closed behind him, and Claire's smile faded.
---
The rules changed after Dole left.
Rei had been patient, playing the devoted wife, but now there was no one to perform for. The twins were still there, but they were children—easily distracted, easily placated.
"You're going to stay naked from now on," Rei announced one morning, her voice calm and matter-of-fact. "In the house, when it's just us, you will wear nothing."
Claire's face went pale. "Rei—please—the girls—"
"The girls will be at school," Rei said, cutting her off. "And when they're home, you'll dress. But the rest of the time, you'll be exactly as I want you."
Claire opened her mouth to argue, but Rei's violet eyes silenced her. There was no point. There was never any point.
She undressed slowly, her hands trembling, and stood before her wife, naked and vulnerable. Rei circled her, her eyes cold and appraising.
"Beautiful," she murmured. "You're so beautiful when you're obedient."
She reached into a drawer and pulled out a thin leather collar. Before Claire could react, she fastened it around her neck, the cold leather pressing against her skin.
"There," Rei said, her voice soft and cruel. "Now you look like what you are. My property. My pet."
---
The collar became Claire's constant companion.
She wore it every day, a thin strip of leather that marked her as Rei's possession. When she moved through the house, she felt its weight against her throat, a constant reminder of her place.
Rei would lead her around the house, a leather leash attached to the collar, pulling her from room to room. "Come, pet," she would say, her voice sweet and mocking. "Time to clean the kitchen."
Claire would crawl on her hands and knees, her body bare, her face burning with shame. The floor was cold against her skin, her breasts swinging as she moved. She would scrub the floors, the counters, the windows—anything Rei commanded.
"Faster," Rei would say, tapping her with the end of the leash. "You're so slow today. Are you tired?"
Claire would nod, her eyes fixed on the floor. "Yes."
Rei would smile, crouching beside her. "Then I'll give you something to wake you up."
She would press her fingers inside Claire, rough and demanding, her smile never faltering. Claire would gasp, her body arching, the pleasure unwanted and unstoppable.
"Don't stop cleaning," Rei would command. "Keep scrubbing."
Claire would obey, her body trembling, her tears streaming down her cheeks.
---
Rei began to blindfold her.
"I don't want you to see," she would say, her voice soft and cruel, as she fastened the silk over Claire's eyes. "I want you to feel. Only feel."
Claire would sit in the darkness, her body exposed, her other senses heightened. She could hear Rei's footsteps, could feel her breath on her skin, could sense her presence even when she was silent.
Sometimes, Rei would circle her, her fingers trailing over Claire's skin, never quite touching. Claire would tremble, her body aching for contact, for release.
"Please," she would whisper. "Please—"
"Please what?" Rei would ask, her voice cold. "Please touch you? Please use you?"
Claire would nod, her cheeks burning with shame.
Rei would smile, even though Claire couldn't see it. "Good girl."
Her fingers would find Claire's most intimate place, pressing inside her, moving with deliberate slowness. Claire would gasp, her body arching, the pleasure building despite everything.
And then Rei would stop.
"Not yet," she would say, pulling away. "You haven't earned it."
Claire would sob, her body trembling, the need aching within her. She would beg, her voice broken, her pride shattered.
"Please—please—"
"Beg harder," Rei would command.
Claire would beg, her voice desperate, her tears soaking the blindfold.
---
Rei found new ways to torment her.
Late at night, when Claire was finally allowed to sleep, Rei would light a candle. She would let the wax drip onto Claire's bare skin—her stomach, her thighs, her breasts. The heat was sharp, biting, a shock that jolted Claire awake.
"Wake up, pet," Rei would murmur, her voice soft and cruel. "I'm not done with you yet."
Claire would cry out, her body arching away from the heat. But Rei would hold her down, her grip bruising.
"Stay still," she would command. "Don't move."
The wax would drip again, and Claire would bite down on her lip, struggling to stay silent. The pain was sharp, but it was nothing compared to the shame.
"Please—" she would whisper, her voice breaking.
"Please what?" Rei would ask, her violet eyes gleaming.
"Please stop."
Rei would smile, letting another drop fall. "No. I don't think I will."
---
Claire learned to silence herself.
She stopped begging. She stopped crying. She stopped reacting at all. It was the only way to survive—to empty herself completely, to become a shell that Rei could use without breaking.
Rei noticed, of course. She didn't like it.
"You're so quiet," she would say, her fingers tracing Claire's cheek. "I liked it better when you begged."
Claire would not respond. She had learned that silence was her only defense.
Rei's hand would tighten on her chin, forcing her to look up. "I said I liked it better when you begged."
Claire's voice was hollow. "Please."
"Please what?"
"Please don't hurt me."
Rei would smile, her violet eyes cold and cruel. "That's better. But I'm not done with you yet."
---
To the outside world, everything was perfect.
When Rei took Claire and the twins to the market, they were a picture of domestic bliss. Rei would hold Claire's hand, her smile warm, her voice soft. Claire would smile back, her face serene, her body hidden beneath beautiful clothes.
The neighbors would comment on how lovely they looked. "You're so lucky," they would say to Rei. "Your wife is so beautiful."
Rei would smile, her arm around Claire's waist. "I know. I'm so blessed."
Claire would stand there, her smile fixed, her eyes empty. She knew what would happen when they got home. She knew what awaited her behind closed doors.
But no one else could see it.
No one else knew.
---
Claire had become a doll.
Beautiful. Silent. Empty.
She moved through the motions of her life, but there was nothing inside her—no hope, no desire, no will. She had given up. She had surrendered.
Rei was pleased.
"You're perfect now," she would say, her fingers tracing Claire's cheek. "My beautiful, broken doll."
Claire would not respond. She had nothing left to say.
---
The enchantments had been placed weeks ago, woven into Claire's skin like invisible chains. Rei had whispered the words while Claire slept, binding her magic, sealing it away. Claire had woken the next morning feeling hollow—a void where her power used to be.
"Your magic is mine now," Rei had said, her violet eyes gleaming. "You can't use it. You can't even feel it. You're completely powerless."
Claire had tried to summon a spark of fire, a flicker of wind—nothing. The emptiness inside her was absolute. She was trapped, not just physically, but magically. A bird with clipped wings.
---
The children noticed the changes.
Mei had always been perceptive. She watched her mothers with growing unease, her small brow furrowed. She had seen the way Mommy Claire flinched when Rei touched her. The way her smiles never reached her eyes. The way she would sometimes stare at her own hands, as if waiting for something that would never come.
And then there was the collar.
Mei had seen it—the thin strip of leather that appeared around her mother's neck when the adults thought no one was watching. It wasn't there all the time, but when it was, Mommy Claire's eyes looked even emptier than usual.
"What is that thing around Mommy Claire's neck?" Mei asked Aleah one night, her voice hushed.
Aleah's face was pale. "I don't know. But I don't like it."
Mei bit her lip. "Do you think Mommy Rei is hurting her?"
Aleah was silent for a long moment. Then she said, her voice barely a whisper, "I think Mommy Rei is the reason Mommy Claire looks so sad all the time."
---
The bruises were harder to hide.
Rei used her healing magic on Claire every night, smoothing away the marks, erasing the evidence. But sometimes, when Claire moved in the wrong light, the faint shadows would appear—purple smudges on her wrists, her arms, her neck.
Mei noticed one afternoon. Claire was reaching for a glass in the kitchen, her sleeve slipping down to reveal a faint bruise on her forearm. Mei's eyes widened, her breath catching.
"Mommy Claire, what happened to your arm?"
Claire's face went pale. She pulled her sleeve down quickly, forcing a smile. "Nothing, sweetheart. I just bumped it."
Mei didn't believe her. She could see the fear in her mother's eyes, the way her hands trembled.
"Did Mommy Rei do that to you?" Mei asked, her voice small and trembling.
Claire's smile faltered. "Of course not. Mommy Rei loves me. She would never hurt me."
But even as she said the words, her eyes filled with tears. Mei saw them. She said nothing, but she filed it away, tucked it deep in her heart.
---
The isolation grew worse.
Claire was allowed to see the twins only at specific times—dinner, bedtime, always under Rei's watchful eye. The rest of the time, she was confined to the bedroom, her body bare, her collar a constant weight against her throat.
"Mommy Claire is resting," Rei would say, her voice warm and soothing. "She needs her strength. She'll be better soon."
The twins would nod, their small faces troubled but obedient. But Mei couldn't forget the look in her mother's eyes. She couldn't forget the bruises. She couldn't forget the collar.
---
Claire lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling. She could hear the girls' voices drifting up from downstairs—their laughter, their chatter. She could hear Rei's voice, smooth and controlled, guiding the conversation.
She missed them. She missed them so much it hurt.
But more than that, she missed Rei.
The real Rei. The woman who had saved her from execution, who had risked everything to protect her. The woman who used to make her laugh, who used to tease her with playful jokes, who used to hold her and whisper sweet things in the dark.
Rei had loved her. She had loved her with a fierceness that had amazed Claire, that had made her feel safe and cherished and adored.
And now that woman was gone.
Claire reached up and touched the collar around her neck. It was a constant reminder of what she had become—a pet, a toy, a thing to be used.
But in her heart, she held onto a tiny spark of hope. Somewhere, deep inside Rei, the woman she loved was still there. She had to be.
Claire closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek. She remembered Rei's laugh—bright and free, the sound that had first made her fall in love. She remembered the way Rei would tease her, calling her silly names just to make her smile. She remembered the way Rei would hold her, her arms warm and strong, her voice soft with love.
"Please," she whispered into the darkness. "Please come back to me."
---
The bruises healed, but the fear lingered.
Mei couldn't stop thinking about what she had seen. She tried to talk to Aleah about it, tried to share her fears, but Aleah was unable to understand it —she still wanted to believe that everything was okay.
"Maybe Mommy Claire really did just bump her arm," Aleah said, her voice uncertain.
Mei shook her head. "No. I saw her face. She was scared. She's always scared now."
Aleah's eyes filled with tears. "What are we going to do?"
Mei was silent for a long moment. Then she said, her voice fierce and determined, "We're going to find a way to help her. We're going to find a way to bring back the old Mommy Rei."
---
Claire never told anyone about the bruises. She never told anyone about the collar. She never told anyone about the enchantments that had stolen her magic.
She kept it all locked inside, buried deep beneath layers of silence and submission. It was the only way to survive.
But in her heart, she held onto that tiny spark of hope. The hope that one day, Rei would come back to her. The hope that one day, she would be free.
Until then, she would endure. She would wait. She would hope.
Because that was what love did. It endured. It waited. It hoped against all hope.
