A Badly Kept Secret

Summary:

Written for Sambastian Week Day 1: Band Practice

Abigail is pretty sure her best friends are in a relationship together. After all, they're doing a really bad job of keeping it a secret.

*~*

Abigail had a headache.

It wasn't the kind that would warrant a trip to the doctor's, thank the Yoba. She hated going to the doctor, even though the clinic was literally next door to her home. No, this headache was borne from the fact that her two best friends were very clearly dating, and really trying to hide it, and it grew more and more painful as the days went on because of the fact that they were both really bad at hiding things.

Notes:

Happy Sambastian Sunday and Happy Sambastian Week!

After months of planning, Sambastian Week 2026 is finally here! This fic was written for the day one prompt: Band Practice

I have a new one shot to post each day this week, and I hope you enjoy my first offering.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A Badly Kept Secret

Abigail had a headache.

It wasn't the kind that would warrant a trip to the doctor's, thank the Yoba. She hated going to the doctor, even though the clinic was literally next door to her home. No, this headache was borne from the fact that her two best friends were very clearly dating, and really trying to hide it, and it grew more and more painful as the days went on because of the fact that they were both really bad at hiding things.

Take today's band practice, for instance. The first half of the practice had been dedicated to rehearsing their existing catalogue, which had gone pretty well. Abigail had dropped her drumsticks just twice (three times fewer than their last practice), and Sam had only broken one guitar string. Sebastian had played perfectly, as usual, but he was the only one of the three of them who had any formal music training, so that wasn't surprising (even if it was a little annoying). The second half, though? The second half was devoted to workshopping new songs, and her friends had been arguing for the last half hour about what the details of the ambiguous love interest in the song should look like.

Case in point:

"I think the eyes should be green," Sebastian said, staring into Sam's grassy green eyes. "So many things rhyme with green."

"Like what?" Sam countered, looking unconvinced.

"Well," Sebastian began, clearly not having expected to have to come up with a list, even though in Abigail's opinion, he should have. "There's 'screen', 'seen'..." he hesitated, obviously drawing a blank. He looked at Abigail helplessly, but she just shrugged in spite of the fact that she had a half dozen other rhymes, so Sebastian looked back at Sam, his eyes dropping to his pants. "Um.. 'peen'."

"Peen's not a word!" Sam protested, turning red as he realized where Sebastian was looking. He didn't look mad, though.

"It is, too!" Sebastian insisted. "Like a peen hammer."

"What the fuck is a peen hammer?" Abigail asked in spite of herself.

"It's used for metalworking." Sebastian explained. "Mom owns a couple of them."

"Well it sounds like you're saying 'dick'," Sam interjected. "We aren't singing about dick, Seb."

Well not with that attitude, Abigail thought. She was about to make a joke, but Sam spoke again. "Besides the eyes are gonna be grey."

Abigail rolled her eyes. Of course Sam would say that. Sebastian's eyes were grey, after all. She zoned out as her friends continued arguing about eye colour, only vaguely hearing Sam saying words that rhymed with 'grey' in a voice that got louder with each new rhyme ("cliché, exposée, oh, I know! Macramé!"), wondering when they would finally come out to her.

She had to assume they wouldn't be worried about her rejecting them. After all, they'd been incredibly supportive when she had come out to them. So she could only guess that they wanted to keep their relationship secret for other reasons. Maybe they were afraid about how others would react? She knew Sam's mom was pretty conservative, but Jodi had pulled Abigail aside and given her a rainbow pin at the last Egg Festival. Come to think of that, Abigail had never told Sam that. Maybe she should. Maybe that would hurry things along.

"Abby, should the hair be blonde or black?" Sam interrupted her thoughts.

"Oh my Yoba, I don't carrrre," Abby whined. "Guys you've been working on this for an hour and you've gotten nowhere!"

Sebastian shot her an annoyed look. "What are you even talking about?" he said. "We have lyrics."

"Yeah, Abby," Sam bristled. "'Your skin glows like it's been kissed by the moon' is a perfectly decent line."

"I still think it should say sun instead of moon," Sebastian muttered.

"Ughhhhh!" Abigail let out a groan of frustration as she stood up. Maybe if I leave them alone for a while, they'll figure things out for themselves. "Whatever," she added, rolling her eyes again. "I'm leaving. Call me when you've got a song."

"Wait, you're leaving?" Sam looked crestfallen. "You're not mad at us, are you?"

Abigail sighed, slinging one arm over his shoulder and pressing a kiss into his hair (Yoba's dried elbow skin! How much hair gel does he use, anyways?). "No, you goober," she said. "I just have a headache. You two keep practicing and call me when you figure out the lyrics."

"Alright," Sam said as she walked to the door.

"I hope your headache goes away soon," Sebastian offered.

"Me too, Seb. Me too. Anyways, have fun, guys," she added as she left. Don't forget to use protection, she stopped herself from saying just in time.

"Band practice over already?" Jodi asked as Abigail made her way through the house.

"No, I just have a bit of a headache," Abigail said, stopping by the door to pull on her shoes. "They're working on a song together, so I thought I'd leave them to it."

"Is that was the kids are calling it these days?" Abigail could have sworn she heard Jodi mutter under her breath, and she had to stop herself from laughing. It was nice to know she wasn't the only one who'd figured her idiot best friends out. "Make sure you drink some water, dear," Jodi said in a much louder voice.

"I will," Abigail smiled at her. "Thanks Jodi! I'll see you soon." With that Abigail left the house, taking the short cut that went between Sam's place and Haley's to go head back home. As she passed Sam's window, she could hear him and Sebastian talking.

"It's kind of nice that we're the only ones who know about us, but I do feel bad about not telling Abs at least," Sebastian was saying.

Abigail froze in place at the mention of her name.

"I know what you mean," Sam replied, followed by a rather obvious kissing noise. "When do you think we should tell her?"

"She already knows!" Abigail jumped as Haley popped her head out of her own bedroom window that was directly across from Sam's. "We all know," she added with a grin as Sebastian swore and Sam scrambled to close his window. "Hey babe," she called down to Abigail. "Band practice over already? What are you up to the rest of the day? Want to come in and show those two how loud kissing can really be?"

Abigail grinned, turning around to Haley's front door. That sounded like an excellent idea.
