After winning the Trial of Seven, Baelor Breakspear dying, and losing faith in the gods and himself, Dunk lies down underneath his tree, closes his eyes, and wishes he were dead. And when he opens them, none of it has happened.

Or: Dunk seems to be the only person who has the power to change fate. But why would anyone choose him?

“I’m sorry,” he said, entirely unapologetically, “but I couldn’t hear you.” He licked his lips, his gaze skipping from Dunk’s eyes to his mouth and back. “Say it again. Look me in the eyes and say it again.”

How was this possible? How could it be that Prince Baelor, who had done nothing but the honourable, chivalrous thing, had come to pay the price for Dunk’s actions?

    _
It made Dunk’s heart skip a beat. As if, the moment he stopped seeing Baelor, his mind suddenly couldn’t overpower the terrible visions. As if the prince was only real as long as Dunk’s eyes were on him.

    _
I’ve researched spells that could change the past; spells which could ensure Baelor’s survival. And I crafted this one so that it would let him live through his last day again, with the knowledge of what had gone wrong. That way, he could change his action and thus rewrite his fate.
    (...)
Until you have saved Baelor, you will live the day, over and over again. Only when you’ve found the path to the future where the spell is fulfilled, you will be released from its power.”

    _
What makes a man? It is taking care of what is his. His lands, his people, his family.

    _
There were a million ways to fail. There had to be one to succeed. There had to be at least one.
