Then Danny stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Nicholas in a quick, slightly clumsy hug—like he wasn’t sure if he was allowed but was doing it anyway.
Nicholas froze.
Then, slowly, he hugged back.
Not stiff.
Not awkward.
Just…holding on.
Danny smelled like frosting and cheap party poppers and the familiar laundry detergent from the station.
“Happy birthday, Nick,” he murmured into his shoulder.
Nicholas closed his eyes for a second.
