Chapter 1: The Start of a New Life

Chapter Text

Harry should have known life wouldn't be easy for him. He had defeated the dark lord, started reworking the wizarding world, and was on route to get married to Ginny. What he hadn't accounted for, apparently, was for everything to come crashing down around him.

He was sitting at home on a rare day where he had nothing to do when the owl arrived with the letter from Gringotts. He hadn't been expecting anything since he was all but banned from the institution. He took the letter from the owl, giving the bird a treat before opening the letter. As he read, his frown deepened further until he physically couldn't frown anymore. With the letter in hand, he apparated on the spot directly into Gringotts Bank.

He made his way to a teller. “Good afternoon, I received a letter from my account manager regarding my accounts.” The goblin in front of him nodded. He gives his name and his wand over for verification, then he’s led to his account manager's office.

The goblin inside is looking through multiple files when the door is opened. “Lord Potter, I see you got my owl.” The goblin motions for Harry to sit in the chair in front of his desk before he continues speaking. “We have found a discrepancy in your account. It seems some of your assets are in danger.”

Harry frowns, “What do you mean?”

The goblin steeples his hands in front of himself as he continues. “Before we get into that, I would like to run an inheritance test to verify your Lordships ' and accounts you have access to.” Harry frowns but agrees.

The goblin grabs a parchment, then a ceremonial knife. He holds his hand out for Harry to put his own in, which he does, before he pricks Harry’s pointer finger with the knife and presses until five drops of blood land on the parchment.

The text appears almost instantly. The goblin frowns. “Oh dear…this is a predicament.” Harry frowns as the parchment is turned towards him so he can read it.

It goes on to list his account assets. Mainly, the vaults he controls and the current amounts in each. What he hadn't been expecting was to find out that James and Lily Potter were not in fact his parents after all. Then the second realization set in. He’d killed his own father. Although his father was an evil dark lord but he hadn't been an orphan. The third realization was that Snape had been his other parent. He’d watched the man die…held him as he took his last breath.

Had Snape known Harry was his son? Probably not, or he would have been treated better in class. He’d had parents this whole time. Two of them ones that maybe loved him once upon a time.

When had he been taken from them? Had they looked for him? Was that why Voldemort had gone after the Potters? He guessed he’d never get his answer. Everyone involved was dead. He put his head in his hands, then looked at his accountant. “What do we do from here? Clearly, I'm the victim of kidnapping, extortion, and illegal activities. My true parents are dead, and no one can exactly ask the Potters what their part in it was.”

The goblin sighed as he looked over the document. As he went to speak, the room's air took on a hollow feel. It became colder, both Harry’s and the goblin’s breath coming out foggy. When Harry turned, a cloaked figure stood before them. “Death.”

Harry didn’t know how he knew the figure's identity, but something in him knew. “Yes, young master. I am Death. I have come to assist in your predicament.”

This couldn't be real. Death was here, offering help? What had Harry’s life become? “Alright. How do you intend to help then?”

Death just stood there, face covered by the cloak. “I can send you back in time. My limit is ten years. You’ll have the opportunity to find your true parents and live a happy life.”

Ten years ago, Harry was eight years old. Still living with the Dursleys and miserable. He’d take the chance. Not like he had anything but betrayal and deceit to stay here for. He nodded and stood u, prepared to take death's hand when the goblin stood up. “Wait, Lord Potter, I will give you a portkey so that upon waking up ten years from now, you'll be able to come directly here and get an inheritance test.”

The goblin pulls a watch from one of his drawers before creating the portkey and handing it to Harry, who clasps it onto his wrist. He then looked at death. “How will I know to do any of this?”

Death just tilted their head and replied, “You will retain your memories for now…they will fade as you make new ones.” Harry just nods, taking a deep breath before he lets death touch him.

Everything goes dark and cold. He feels like his entire being is squeezed down until he's physically smaller. When the warmth returns, he opens his eyes to the dusty spider web-filled ceiling of the cupboard under the stairs at the Dursleys’ house. Then the exhaustion and pain set in from whatever Aunt Petunia had him do the day before. He wasted no time in hitting his portkey and being transported directly into his account manager's office.

The goblin jumps at his arrival. “Good heavens, child! Who are you and how did you arrive in my office?”

Harry weighed what he should say before he spoke. “I’m Harry. I was given this watch and told to touch it…then when I arrived to ask for an inheritance test.”

Was that really his voice? No way he ever sounded that high-pitched. He watched as the goblin nodded and motioned for him to sit, which Harry did, before he pulled out parchment and the same ceremonial knife from the last time Harry had this done. The test was administered, and the same results were found. “Good heavens…I shall send for your rightful parent at once!”

The goblin wrote a note quickly, then summoned an owl and sent it on its way. Then he looked at Harry. “Are you hungry, young man?” Harry nodded, and the goblin handed him some snacks. Then they waited.

It took ten minutes for Snape to come to the room, led by another goblin. When he looked at Harry, he froze, then turned to the goblin. “Why have I been summoned?” The goblin just handed over the inheritance test.

Watching Snape's reaction made Harry unsure of this entire plan. Annoyance turned to shock, which quickly turned to anger. The final emotion was sadness. The Professor turned to Harry, kneeling in front of him. “You must be so confused. My name is Severus Prince…I'm your papa.”
