Chapter Text
Paris. The City of Lights. It was everything Marinette had promised and more. The soft, golden glow filtering through the ornate street lamps at dusk, the charming labyrinth of cobblestone streets, the distant chime of church bells – the air hummed with a different kind of energy than Gotham. It was a lighter, more artistic pulse, less frantic, more focused on the beauty of the everyday. Damian, surprisingly, found himself unbothered by the charming crowds, his sharp focus entirely on Marinette. She moved through the bustling streets with an easy grace, clearly showing off she was a born Parisian, pointing out historic landmarks with a passionate enthusiasm and leading him down hidden alleys to discover tiny, exquisite bakeries with pastries that looked like edible works of art. They visited the Louvre, not just to admire the masterpieces, but for Marinette to sketch architectural details and the drape of ancient robes. They explored hidden courtyards, stumbled upon vibrant street art, and spent an entire morning poring over antique textiles in a dusty, fragrant market, Marinette's sketchbook filling rapidly with new inspirations.
During the days, their dates were filled with delightful civilian activities. Damian, who typically adhered to a strict, utilitarian diet, found himself indulging in perfectly flaky croissants and delicate macarons he’d normally disdain. He listened intently to Marinette's excited ramblings about Gothic architecture and the subtle nuances of French fashion history. He even allowed her to drag him into a small art supply shop near the Left Bank where she practically vibrated with excitement, her eyes shining as she explained the virtues of different paper weights and specialized pigments. Throughout it all, he remained meticulously vigilant about their privacy. He subtly guided her away from potential lines of sight for his overzealous brothers, seamlessly avoiding crowded tourist traps where a 'random' American tourist might linger a moment too long. He'd ensured their luxurious hotel suite had robust, upgraded privacy measures, convinced he was a step ahead of his surveillance-happy siblings. He felt a quiet, burgeoning satisfaction in successfully evading his brothers, knowing they were undoubtedly tearing their hair out back in Gotham, frustrated by their inability to pinpoint his precise location.
What he hadn't accounted for, however, was Marinette's other family.
They were nestled in a small, charming café near the Seine, enjoying coffee and macarons. Marinette was recounting a story about a particularly stubborn zipper on a prototype dress for the upcoming gala, her hands animatedly describing the struggle, when a chorus of voices, loud and impossibly cheerful, cut through the café's gentle hum.
"Mari-bug! There you are!"
"Hey, Bugaboo!"
"Marinette!"
Damian stiffened immediately, his internal alarm bells blaring with a sudden, jarring urgency. Those nicknames. He knew those nicknames. He'd heard them on videos, years ago, when he was scouting potential vigilante contacts in Paris, cataloging known heroes and their associated civilians. He recognized them as familiar, if somewhat sentimental, identifiers. He spun around, his posture instinctively shifting, ready to confront an intruder who clearly knew Marinette's code name, only to see a group of six figures descending upon their table with the casualness of old friends.
First was a tall, young man with impossibly bright brown eyes and a perpetually cheerful grin, a cap on his head and headphones around his neck almost bouncing on the balls of his feet (Nino). He was followed closely by a red/brown-haired girl with sharp, mischievous brown eyes, already pulling out her phone (Alya). Bringing up the rear was a boy with picture perfect blonde hair, looking slightly more reserved but with an equally friendly smile (Adrien). Trailing slightly behind them were a girl with sleek black hair and intense brown eyes, carrying a fencing bag (Kagami), and a calm, striking young man with vibrant teal-black hair and a guitar slung over his shoulder (Luka).
"Hey, Bugaboo!" Adrien exclaimed again, already pulling Marinette into a boisterous hug that lifted her clean off her feet. "We've been looking for you all morning! Alya said you were meeting someone, but you didn't say who! How's the prep for the gala going, Grand Guardian?"
Marinette laughed, a genuine, unrestrained sound, hugging him back with equal enthusiasm. "Nino! Alya! Adrien! Kagami! Luka! You found me! Oh, this is perfect timing! Guys, this is Damian Wayne, my date." She gestured towards Damian with an easy, inclusive motion. "Damian, these are my best friends – Nino Lahiffe, Alya Césaire, Adrien Agreste, Kagami Tsurugi, Luka Couffaine”
Damian, still reeling from the rapid-fire succession of nicknames and the impossibly casual mention of "Grand Guardian" – a moniker he now recognized as belonging to the revered leader of Paris's former Miraculous Team, a role he'd only known belonged to the elusive Ladybug – could only manage a stiff, almost imperceptible nod. His mind, trained for rapid threat assessment, was now short-circuiting. His brothers were one thing, a predictable annoyance he could generally manage. Her team? They knew her identity? Did they know his identity? Had she figured it out and told them? And they were using their civilian names and childhood nicknames to casually discuss world-saving responsibilities in a public café? It was chaos. Beautiful, terrifying chaos.
Alya, the dark-haired girl with the mischievous glint in her eyes that reminded him unsettlingly of Dick, immediately zeroed in on him. Her gaze was sharp, analytical, like a seasoned reporter sizing up a subject. "So this is the famous Gotham billionaire! Heard you two were doing a project together, Mari-bug. Guess that project extends to Paris!" She winked conspiratorially at Marinette, then turned her full, piercing attention back to Damian. "You know, Marinette's been totally buzzing about this gala. It's a really big deal for her. And she's been keeping something under wraps for you!"
"
Adrien, ever the polite model, offered a charming, almost practiced smile, though his eyes held a genuine warmth. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Wayne. Marinette speaks very highly of your… creative insights. She really valued your help with the collection."
Kagami, direct as ever, simply observed Damian with an unblinking stare that made him feel as if she was evaluating his sword-fighting stance. Luka offered a gentle, knowing smile and a quiet, "It's good to finally put a face to the name, Damian. Marinette's happiness has a new melody."
Nino, meanwhile, had already pulled up a chair without asking and was starting to explain the intricacies of Parisian street art to Marinette, completely oblivious to the silent crisis unfolding in Damian's rigidly controlled mind. He was already pulling up photos on his phone.
Damian forced a strained smile, trying desperately to process the utterly staggering revelation that his incredibly private, seemingly ordinary girlfriend was, in fact, a known superhero, the leader of a powerful, former active team, and that her civilian friends were also her former superhero teammates, now using their civilian identities to casually chat about their past heroics. He had spent weeks meticulously keeping his identity under wraps from her, even as she clearly knew his. This was… unexpected. And it was going to be a very, very long trip. Keeping her secret safe from his family, while her team apparently shouted it from the rooftops in charming Parisian cafés, was going to be a new level of challenge entirely. He felt a headache forming behind his eyes, a familiar throb usually reserved for particularly obtuse villains or his more annoying brothers.
