Summary
Just as he secured the small load of peppermints in his right hand (after putting some back—he probably didn’t need thirteen peppermints), he was ready to put on the lid, sneak back into his room, and test his experiment—but before he even got the chance to close the container, he heard footsteps, lightly echoing from the hallway.
The footfalls got increasingly closer in the few seconds that he froze from sheer panic, and they rounded the corner in record time.
Peter shut the cabinets, hastily spinning around. As soon as he was faced with someone, who was likely not paying attention as they stepped into the kitchen, he shoved the few peppermints he had into his mouth.
Why was his first, initial response, to shove them in his mouth, like he was genuinely stealing something that he wasn’t supposed to? He doesn’t know. Not a single bit. It's just the first thing he thought of.
