Chapter 1: Hug

Notes:

Edit: I decided at the beginning that each chapter would be 500 - 1,000 words, but I sometimes end up going past that, lol

Chapter Text

“HOLY HELL, KID, ARE YOU OKAY??”

“DAKOTA! Don’t curse in front of children!”

“Cav, the kid just did, like, seventeen backflips over a herd of cattle on a unicycle that was on fire. I think my reaction is pretty tame.

Milo Murphy groaned as he rubbed his head. He could ride a unicycle just fine, but riding one that was on fire was a little harder. Especially getting off of one. He had tripped a little as he dismounted and hit his noggin on the cement. Thankfully, he seemed to be just fine, other than a bump on his head and a headache, but that didn't stop his godfathers from fussing over him.

“Quick, Dakota! We must elevate his head! No, no, Milo, stay still! Did you lose consciousness at any point? Do you feel weak? Any trouble breathing? Do you remember where you are?” Cavendish quickly lifted Milo's head and placed it on his lap, while running his hands along all sides of Milo's head, looking for injury.

“C-Cav, I'm fine, I promise!” Milo tried swatting his hands away, but was unsuccessful, as Cavendish's arms were much longer and far more determined.

“Kid, kid, look at me.” Dakota waved his hand in front of Milo's face, getting his attention.

Giving up on trying to get Cavendish to leave him alone, Milo turned to look at Dakota. He was staring intently in his eyes, darting back and forth between them before glancing around to other areas of his face.

Milo squirmed under his scrutinizing gaze. This was definitely far from the worst head injury he'd ever had, and he could tell when he was fine and when he needed to stop at the hospital on the way home. This incident was solidly in the first category, and, if it was up to him, he would be continuing on his way to school and ask the nurse for an ice pack when he got there. It was just his luck, however, that he managed to fall right in front of the two most overprotective members of his family. Cavendish and Dakota had taken their new role as godfathers very seriously, freaking out over every small injury and cut he got and insisting on nursing him back to health, however unnecessary it usually was. There was no way he'd get to school on time now, in fact, they might just keep him home from school today, and fuss over him for the rest of the-

“Yeah, he's fine.” Dakota interrupted his thoughts, patting him firmly on the shoulder.

“Wh- really?” Milo blinked up at him, mouth falling open.

Really? Are you sure?” Cavendish worried, biting his lip. Milo chuckled as he patted his hair, trying to smooth down his signature flip.

Dakota smiled warmly. “Yeah. I don't see any concerning symptoms, and I trust Milo enough to know that he'd tell us if anything was off. He should be all good to go to school.” Dakota ruffled Milo's hair, completely undoing all of Cavendish's efforts.

Milo couldn't help but grin as Cavendish reluctantly conceded. “... Fine . But! If you start to feel dizzy, or, or restless, or have trouble concentrating, or anything, call us at once!” He waggled a finger at him as Milo sat up.

Milo couldn't stop smiling. “Of course. There's no one I'd rather call.”

For a moment, Cavendish just stared at him. Milo's smile faltered for a moment as he wondered if, maybe, he had said something wrong. Then, Cavendish surged forward, scooping Milo into his arms and hugging him tight.

Milo let out an undignified squeak as he was taken by surprise. Then, it dissolved into giggles. He squirmed in Cavendish's tight hold, trying to wiggle his arms free so he could hug him back. He felt his face start to hurt from smiling too much when another pair of arms wrapped around him. He grinned up at Dakota as his cheek came to rest on his head, Milo's hair tickling his nose.

Milo fought to speak through his giggles. “Come onnnn, guys, what's with all the affection?? I still have to get to school today, you know!”

“Ah, yes, sorry...” Cavendish chuckled awkwardly, pulling back but finding himself trapped by Dakota’s arms worming around him as well. “ Dakota-

“It's fiiiiine, we can drive 'im,” Dakota grinned. “ After we get ice cream. You want some ice cream, Miles?”

“Heck yeah!!” Who could say no to ice cream? Even a grumpy Cavendish had little more to say than a huff that 'it had better not take too long.'

Milo had to admit, nothing could beat sitting with his godfathers in an ice cream parlor, sharing a pistachio-flavored treat.
