The Never-Ending Dance

Summary:

A split-perspective poem about Batman and Joker’s relationship.

Notes:

In a poem like this, there are two people narrating, but each person has their own side of text, and there’s a middle text when they’re both saying something. In this case, the text on the left is Batman, and the text on the right is the Joker.

This poem may not be ideal to read on a cell phone, because of the narrow screen.

Work Text:

I wish I could stop thinking about it

I wish I could see it over and over again

Our rooftop dance

I was pursuing you from the scene of the crime

I had tried another way to get your attention

And we fought

Like we always do

A sick, obsessive pattern

A beautiful, bright rhythm

A perfect dream

It should have been a nightmare

Blows and blows-

punches

cuts

batarangs

and laughing gas

Weapons tried and true

Time and time again

But the scene has to end

But I always win

And so we drive to Arkham

A place I fear how much I belong

A place that was made for me

And I ask the same question

Even though I know the answer

Will you please let me

Rehabilitate you?

Corrupt you?

All I want is for you to

See the world the way I do

Nothing matters

Everything matters

Every one matters

All I want is to help you

I could make you free, for the first time in your life

I could save you from the prison of your mind

But I don’t know how to change your answer

And I don’t want to change mine

And I fear that one day you’ll die

And I’ll settle for the next best thing:

Dying by your hand

That you’ll wear down my ideals until I break

And if that happened,

nothing would ever be the same

But in the meantime

I cause problems

And I react

I endanger people

And I save them

And we fight, and fight, and fight

And I try to hide it

And I remind you

How much we both love our dance
