Hyouma knew that it was probably a bad idea, giving this kid — ten years his junior — a promise that they'd get married when he was old enough but, much like running with scissors, it seemed harmless enough at the time. Then it came back to bite him in the ass.

Chigiri Hyouma agrees to marry Michael Noa when the six-year-old asks, thinking the kid would definitely forget by the time he was old enough to actually do something about it. Spoiler alert: he didn't.

Do you think he knows what he means to you?”
Michael laughed again, deeply this time. He threw his head back, stretching his neck. His hair swung, brushing against the rose tattoo as they changed back to a frontal view, drawing Hyouma’s eye. He followed the stems down over Michael’s clavicle, eying the twists and thorns that formed a barbed chain around his left arm.
Michael had always hated pain, crying over every stubbed toe and burnt tongue. How had he sat through getting a tattoo on such sensitive skin as his neck?
“A few months ago? Maybe not, but I think he does now!”
“So you think he’s watching?”
He shifted, leaning forward in his seat. “I know he is.”

--“Chigirin!” Bachira chirped when he answered the phone. “What’s up?”
“I need a favor —” he started, already dreading the words he was about to say.
“I’ve told you a million times, we can do kissing lessons whenever you want!”
“Umm…what? That’s not — no, I’m a great — what?”
“Oh! Well in that case, Rin would be happy to teach you —”
Even before Hyouma could cut him off (or hear what Rin could supposedly teach him), he heard Rin squawk in indignation in the background.
“No, I —”
“Oh! Well in that case, you and Reo are always free to use the house when I’m away —”
“Bachira!” Hyouma intervened, though that was actually a tempting offer. “That’s not — none of those things are why I’m calling. I…” He heaved a sigh. “I was wondering if you could ask Rin to ask Sae to ask Ness for Kaiser’s number.”
He could basically hear Bachira blink from the other end of the line, nose scrunched as he processed the request. It had sounded better, more rational and less convoluted, in his head.
Bachira was dating Rin, whose older brother Sae played on Royale Madrid with Alexis Ness. Two years ago, Ness had been on the German U20 team, presumably — possibly — with Michael Kaiser. They should know each other. They should have each others’ phone numbers.
“Why don’t you just ask Sae-chan yourself?” Bachira finally answered.
Because Sae, if asked by anyone outside of a select few people, would say ‘no’. The ‘select few’ were actually only just Rin and the coach of whatever team he was playing for, and even then the yes:no ratio was often 1:3, but they at least got more than .2 seconds of consideration for their trouble.
The last time Sae had said ‘yes’ to anything Hyouma asked was when they were six drinks into celebrations after having qualified for the World Cup three years earlier after beating New Zealand. Hyouma had put his hotel keycard on the table between them. Sae had looked at it for a few moments before picking it up.
Technically, there hadn’t been a question. Technically, Sae hadn’t even said yes.
He had, however, said ‘yes!’ later that night. Many times, if memory served.
