Chapter Text
Earth-8099: New Eden . . . .
Elena walked alongside her childhood friend, Janet van Dyne, and the rest of their classmates in peculiar building. Their entire class was on a field trip to a museum that was near their school, but it wasn’t an ordinary museum like the ones that showcased famous artwork or important events and people from history. It was one that showed all sorts of artifacts of the arcane from all over the world, so it was more of a museum of magic. Most of the students didn’t care for the ancient objects that were on display, but Elena was.
In fact, she was currently looking at a prism gem that was said to have belonged to a witch from long ago. “Just look at how pretty it is!” Elena muttered.
“You really are impressed by almost anything, huh?” Janet asked, slightly amused by the brunette’s expressions.
“Huh?”
“Nothing. What’s so special about some rock anyway? What’s it supposed to do?” Janet questioned, looking at the prism. “Well according to the legend, it was made by a witch to imprison a demon that was going to destroy her village.” Elena explained. “And the demon’s been sealed in the prism ever since.”
“Demons? Really?” Janet said. “What? That’s what the story said.” Elena told her. “But you don’t actually believe that stuff, right?” Janet said. “Not really. I know that there’s a normal reason behind weird stuff happening in real life. I just like magic because of the shows that I watched with my family when I was little.” she explained.
“Oh. I guess that makes sense. So what do you want to do after this?” Janet asked.
“Well, I-” Suddenly, everything around them began to shake violently, alarming everyone. “!” ‘What the hell is that?! An earthquake?’ Elena wondered, attempting to get her and her friends back with the group for safety. Then, the display for the prism fell over, causing both the glass case and the gem to shatter. ‘The prism! It broke?!’
“Elena, c’mon!” Janet shouted, grabbing a hold of her friend’s wrist and dragging her away. The two friends made sure to stay away from any glass items that were nearby, and since they couldn’t find their group, the two nineteen year olds found a table and hid underneath it, deciding to wait it out.
Three minutes passed, and the shaking stopped.
“Do you guys think it’s safe now?” Janet asked, not sure if they should get out from underneath. “I think so.” Elena said, being the first one to get out. She helped Janet get out from under the table and look for their group again. Elena and her friend made sure to be careful of the broken glass around them, especially Janet since she wore sandals.
The three then saw their teacher, Mr. Sanderson, and the rest of their classmates. The blonde haired man looked at the three, relief all over his face. “There you are! I was getting really worried when I didn’t see you all here. Are you two ok?” he asked. “We’re fine.” Janet said. “Are you sure? Nothing broken, nothing bruised?”
Elena and Janet nodded their heads. “Alright, if you all say so. Ok, I want everyone to call their parents or guardians right now so that they can come pick you up.” the teacher said loudly.
Everyone nodded and pulled out their phones to make a phone call. Janet talked to her father. Elena knew that both her parents were busy with work, so she decided to leave a voicemail for them to listen to. For her ride home, the young latina decided to call her grandfather. First thing’s first, leave two voicemails for her parents.
As soon as Elena went to her father’s contact info, she felt something on her hand.
“?”
She looked to see that there was a dark purple spider with glowing green eyes. Before she could react, the spider bit down on her flesh, leaving two red spots on her skin. “Ugh. . .!” Elena raised her left hand and smacked the creature, killing it. The small body of the spider fell from her hand, landing on the concrete.
“Hello? Elena, is that you?”
“!”
The brunette raised her phone up to her ear. “Dad? Is that you?” Elena asked, shocked that he answered right away. “Aren’t you busy at the station?” “I just got back home from my shift when I felt the ground shake. Are you ok? That was a pretty big earthquake.”
Elena sighed, still looking at the spider bite. “Yeah, I’m ok. The only thing that happened to me was getting bitten by a weird looking spider.” “A spider bite? Is it bad?” her father questions. “Strangely, no. I guess I got lucky that it’s not poisonous.” Elena heard someone opening the door in her family home, causing her to wonder if her mother got back from her shift at the Italian restaurant nearby.
“Is that Mom?” Elena asked. “Yeah, it is. I’m gonna tell her about what happened so that she doesn’t worry. I’ll see you home, ok? ”
“Ok. I’ll see you soon. Bye. I love you.”
“I love you too. Bye.”
The call ended, leaving Elena to now hear the others speaking on their phones. The brunette decided to text her grandfather to come pick her up, when suddenly, Janet appeared in front of her. “Hey, so I called my dad and told him about what happened.” “How’d he take it?” Elena asked. “He was really worried, asking if I needed to be taken to the hospital. How’d your parents take it?” Janet said.
“My dad asked if I was hurt, and he’s gonna tell my mom so that she doesn’t worry.” Elena said. Janet’s light blue eyes looked away from Elena’s eyes and noticed the bite on her friend’s hand. “Oh god. What happened?”
“Oh this? It’s just a spider bite.” Elena told her.
As Janet looked over Elena’s hand, the brunette asked, “. . .Jan, what are you doing?” “You got bitten by a spider. I’m just making sure that it’s not poisonous.” Janet replied, not letting go of her hand.
Elena sighed. “Again, I’m fine. It’s not even itchy.” she said, exasperated. “If you say so.” Janet said, finally letting go. “Oh! My dad’s sending a limo to come pick me up. You wanna come with? I can have the driver drop you all off at your home.” she told her. “I don’t know.” Elena said. “My home’s not that far from the museum, and-” rain began to hail from the sky, getting everyone drenched.
“So. . .you wanna take me up on that offer?” Janet asked.
“Yes.”

Corazón Family Home. . . .
After showering, Elena changed into her pajamas and was drying her hair with a fluffy lilac colored towel. She heard a knock on her bedroom door. “Who is it?” she asked loudly. “It’s me, mija . Can I come in?” her mother asked. “Yeah.” The door opened to reveal her mother, her pretty face wearing a concerned expression. “You ok? Some of my friends’ kids were on the field trip with you, and most of them were pretty shaken up.” her mother said.
“Uh. . .I was a little scared earlier, I guess. But I’m fine now.” Elena told her. “Alright, but if you need anything, let me know.” her mother said, and added with a smile, “Dinner’s almost ready. Hurry up before Charlie and Maia decide to take your portion.”
“Wha-?! No way!” Elena shouted, immediately running out of her bedroom. "You guys better not touch my pozole!"
“E-Elena, I was just kidding!”

Elena woke up to the sound of her alarm clock going off like crazy. She let out a groan as she moved to turn it off. ‘I much as I want to go back to sleep, I should probably get ready for school. . .’ Elena then got out of bed and made her way to her and her siblings’ shared bathroom to brush her teeth. As soon as she looked into the mirror, Elena became shocked by the sight of her eyes and the appearance of her body.
She seemed to have slightly more muscle, her matching pajama top and bottoms were now a little too short and tight. And her eyes? They were once sky blue like her mother’s, but they were now a cool minty green, and around her pupils were rings of gold. ‘What. . .what is this?!’ Elena went to rub her eyes to see if she was imagining the whole thing, but found something else that was odd.
Her pink toothbrush was sticking to her hand. Specifically on her palm. “!” Elena struggled to get it off, and when she did, the young woman had accidentally slammed her hand on the wall, causing it to get stuck as well.
“Oh no. . .”
She didn’t know it at the time, but this would change everything. This was the day that she got powers. The day that she’d become a hero.
