I didn’t hear the door close, or Simon’s footsteps in the hallway as he made his way back to me. In fact, I had barely even looked up from my latest manuscript all morning. It was nearly done, and the final details of the piece were eluding me in a way they hadn’t since my earliest days as a journalist. I was frowning at one passage in particular, wondering what mind-altering substances I had been on at the time of writing it to create such nonsense, when Simon entered.
“We got a letter,” he said, quiet and unassuming, nothing in the slow domesticity of his tone to suggest that anything life-altering had happened.
Only Simon could remain so composed after punching a man in the face.
