Chapter Text
Atsumu shrugs off his jacket and basically skips inside. The professional athletics branch of the Ohara agency opened up about six months ago and Atsumu comes by almost daily. You tell him that he should only come in when he’s scheduled to, but he doesn’t listen to you at all. You’ve whacked him on the head a few times.
Technically it is his day to meet with you, but he’s here waaay too early. He knows you’re in a session with another one of his teammates, but he doesn’t care. You told him something about privacy and confidentiality, but who cares. They all talk about therapy at practice anyway.
You purposely put in a lounge area with things requested by your clients so they wouldn’t bother anyone else while they wait their turn. Atsumu suggested videogames, Sakusa suggested a quiet space, and lots of other clients suggested vending machines. Ohara must have given you hella money for whatever, because everything requested was provided within the next week.
“Sakusa-san.” Atsumu heard you call out as he flops onto one of the fluffy beanbag chairs.
He sees Sakusa put the book away he was reading and walk over to where you were standing in the hallway. “Yo, Omi-kun.”
“Oh my god. I can’t ever get away from you.” He snaps.
“Atsumu, why the hell are you here so early?” You sigh.
“Uh. ‘Cause I can?”
“Please don’t bother anyone. Last time I got a complaint about some weird blond guy making lots of unnecessary noise.”
“Oi, I’m not weird!”
“Keep telling yourself that.” You wave as you walk Sakusa down to your office.
“Whatever.” He grumbles as he scrolls through his phone.
You’ve been dating Osamu for about seven months now and Atsumu has never seen his brother happier. With Hana, Osamu was basically a robot. He wasn’t even sure the guy knew what happiness was. He sure as hell was losing the bet they made when they were kids now that Osamu had you. You grounded Osamu and Atsumu couldn’t thank you enough.
Atsumu on the other hand was struggling to tell Hinata that he was very interested in him. You told him that he should find out how Hinata feels before confessing. You told Atsumu that you didn’t want to have to pull him out of the grave he’s digging himself if he tells him only to find out the feelings aren’t reciprocated. Atsumu had an inkling feeling that Hinata was dating Kageyama but wasn’t 100 percent sure.
Atsumu makes the mistake of scrolling through social media while waiting for you and finds exactly what he didn’t want to see. It was a picture, that was just uploaded maybe fifteen minutes ago, of Hinata on a date with Kageyama. The caption said something like, “Happy 4 years!” with a bunch of heart emojis. Atsumu almost died on the spot. He never even had a chance with the red head.
Atsumu decides that he’s waited long enough and marches over to your office. He knocks several times and ends up opening the door.
“How am I supposed to tell that blond dumbass how I feel if he’s obviously infatuated with Hinata?” Sakusa groans.
Both you and Sakusa snap your heads towards the door as Atsumu stares in shock. Sakusa’s face flushes red as you cover your own.
“I… Um… Shouyo-kun… he’s… he’s with Tobio-kun.” Atsumu forces out, not taking his eyes off of Sakusa. “Omi… yah—”
“God fucking damnit Atsumu.” You whine into your hands.
“I’m going to throw up.” Sakusa whispers. “I can’t believe this.”
“Omi yah like me?”
“Atsumu stop—”
“It’s too late to take it back huh?” Sakusa shakes his head. “It’s not like it means anything if you don’t like me back. So just forget about this.”
“Wait.” Atsumu says softly. “I’m not gonna forget about this. Why didn’t yah say anythin’?”
Sakusa scoffs. “You were up Hinata’s ass. It was clear you had a huge thing for him, and I didn’t… want to get in the way.”
Atsumu felt his heart racing in his chest. Sure he really really liked Hinata, but he did think Sakusa was handsome. A bit out of his league though, which scared him from doing anything. Sakusa liked him? There’s no way. No way the Sakusa Kiyoomi, the guy who doesn’t like anyone, would like him.
“But yer way out of my league Omi, why—”
“No, Atsumu, you’re the one that’s out of my league.”
“What?”
“Stop this negative self-talk or I’m pulling out the nerf gun.” You wave Atsumu in. “Might as well sit so this conversation can happen.”
Atsumu does what he’s told and sits in the chair next to Sakusa. He notices the light dust of pink on his cheeks and the slight pout of his lips. His brows are furrowed a bit, but it’s not his normal disgusted look. He's embarrassed.
“Omi I didn’t mean to barge in on yer session like that. I found a picture of Shouyo-kun on a date with Tobio-kun and I didn’t know how to feel. So I ran here and… yeah.”
“How does that make you feel? Seeing Hinata with someone else?” You apparently flipped back into therapy mode.
“I don’t feel as upset as I think I should.”
“So what I’m hearing is that your crush on Hinata didn’t have that big of an impact on you?”
“I guess not. I feel like me walkin’ in on Omi sayin’ he liked me had a bigger impact.”
“Sakusa, what do you think about all of this?”
“I wish it didn’t happen the way it did.” Atsumu grimaces at his words. He knew he should have just waited, but he’s an idiot and didn’t think before he flung the door open. “But I can’t change anything now, can I?”
You shake your head with a soft smile. “I think it all depends on what happens next. Sakusa, did you mean what you said to me about the blond dumbass over here?”
“Sadly, yes.”
“Whadda yah mean ‘sadly’?” Atsumu gawks.
“And Atsumu, what do you think about what Sakusa said?”
Atsumu takes a minute to think back on all of his interactions with Sakusa. He felt his heart flutter when Sakusa joined the team. But he thought it was because he saw Hinata. Sakusa was always by his side, always bickering with him, always giving him constructive criticism, always looking at him even when the play was over, always high fiving when he offered, only going to team bonding when Atsumu asked him… Why didn’t he notice this feeling before? Was Atsumu just so hung up on Hinata that he never noticed how easily Sakusa fit into his hectic life?
“I think I feel the same.” Atsumu offers a small smile.
“You think?”
“Nah, I know.” His gaze meets Sakusa’s. “Sorry it took me so long to notice.”
“I have a feeling that the two of you have a lot more to talk about, so I’ll end the conversation here.” You pat your legs and grin. “Sakusa, do you want to end the session here, or is there anything else that’s on your mind?”
“I’m good. I forgot about everything else.”
“Atsumu, do you still need to meet today?”
“Nah. Omi and I have a lot to talk about, don’t we?” He pats Sakusa’s shoulder.
“Don’t make me regret this.”

Osamu has been stressed for about two weeks now over this one stupid thing that he just can’t seem to do. He’s been so close so many times, but something always interrupts him. Like Atsumu calling him right when he’s about to do it. Like you getting called into work. Like the both of you getting sick after eating bad food on a day trip to Tokyo. Osamu was trying his best. He’s had this moment planned in his head since the day he kissed you. That was a little over a year ago and his plans keep getting ruined.
Today, it’s fucking raining. The two of you planned to take the weekend to go to Hyogo to visit his mom and Gram and meet with Kita about a new rice order, but it’s fucking raining. He had already told Kita he wanted to do it while visiting the gorgeous rice paddy. But nature said not today.
It’s almost like the universe doesn’t want it to happen.
“Damn. I was really hoping to finally get a tour of the farm Kita-kun.” You huff as you take a seat next to Osamu. “We must be really unlucky.”
“I think Osamu’s the unlucky one.” Kita chuckles and Osamu nudges him. “I was gonna show him the new way we harvest his best-sellin’ rice.”
“What a bummer.” You pat Osamu’s head as he leans down against your shoulder. “We’ll have to come up again when we know the weather will be nice.”
Osamu’s phone buzzes a couple of times. He ignores it and nuzzles his face into your neck and sighs dramatically. “I just want one thing to go right.”
You hum in response as Kita gets up to answer the ringing house phone. Osamu takes the opportunity to pull you close and trap you in a tight hug. You chuckle lightly and wrap your arms around him the best you can. He plants a kiss on the top of your head and looks out at the rain. It’s starting to let up, but you never know with Hyogo weather apparently.
Kita comes back and tells Osamu that Atsumu called and told him to call him back later. Osamu rolls his eyes and reluctantly lets go of you to call the bastard back. He walks down the hall and clicks on Atsumu’s ugly contact picture.
“Yo ‘Samu!” Atsumu sounds way too cheery for him. “Didja ask her yet?”
“Nah. It’s fuckin’ rainin’ out here.” Osamu hisses.
“Wow yer never gonna ask her are yah?”
“Yah better not curse me yah asshole.”
“I’m not tryin’ to! Omi keeps askin’—” Osamu hears Sakusa in the background saying something about lying to his brother “—Shut yer trap Omi. Omi and I were just wonderin’. We’re excited for yah! She’s gonna say yes.”
“But what if she says no? What if I’m goin’ too fast?”
“Yer jokin’ right?”
“Nah.”
“Omi. Omi listen to this shit. “Samu said that he thinks (Y/n)-chan’s gonna say no.”
“Is he stupid?” Atsumu must have put it on speaker.
“I don’t need two people slanderin’ me when I’m havin’ a crisis.”
“Osamu, ask her over dinner or something.” Sakusa pipes up. “You’re tying too hard to make it fancy and elaborate.”
“Since when are yah the love guru, Omi?”
“Since the two of you try too hard to impress her.”
“I’m offended Omi.”
“Look, she obviously loves you, or she wouldn’t have let you drag her out to the middle of bumfuck nowhere to look at rice.”
Sakusa was right. This was Osamu’s home. This is where he grew up. It’s nothing exciting at all, but you asked him if you could come. You willingly canceled a fun weekend getaway with friends so you could visit his hometown again. You showed Osamu that you loved him. Now it’s his turn to show you.
“I’m gonna do it tonight. Over dinner. I’ll ask Kita-san if I can make her favorite or somethin’ while he distracts her I dunno.”
“Great idea. Let us know how it goes.”
“Good luck ‘Samu! I’ll tell Sunarin what’s happenin’ so he doesn’t feel left out.”
Osamu hangs up the phone and gains a fresh new boost of confidence. He can do it. He’s going to do this. Hopefully after dinner, you’ll be his fiancée.
***
The rain ended up stopping around three in the afternoon. You were talking with Kita when Osamu declared that he wanted to make dinner for the three of you. You asked if he needed help, but he declined, saying it’s the least he could do for Kita.
Kita narrows his eyes at him and shakes his head. “Alright, (Y/n), would you like a tour of the farm? I think we have a spare pair of boots you can wear.”
You glance back at Osamu who has a bright grin on his face. “Go have a look, baby, I’ve seen it a buncha times.”
“Are you sure? I don’t mind staying and—”
“Nah. Go have fun.” He leans down and kisses the top of your head. “’Sides, someone’s gotta make dinner.”
“Alright. Don’t complain to me that no one helps you do anything.”
“Whatever.” He snorts.
Kita finds you a pair of boots that are a little too big, but you make it work. The farm is gorgeous, especially right before sunset. It’s almost seven by the time Kita brings you back to the house. The sky is layered with orange, red, purple, and blue. Soft stars are starting to peek through as the night sky settles in. You wanted to stare at it forever. You wished Osamu could have seen it with you, but that man really loves cooking, and you weren’t about to stop him.
You slide off your boots and place them outside the front door to be cleaned later before you head inside. You catch a whiff of your favorite dish and hurry to the sink to wash up. Osamu calls you to the table and you see that it’s only set up for two.
“Where’s Kita-kun going to sit?” You slide into your seat across from Osamu and he smiles.
“He had to go run an errand real quick. I told him I’d wrap his plate up.”
The two of you fall into a comfortable conversation about new flavors Osamu wanted to try out at the shop and different places you wanted to visit on your days off. After dinner, you helped Osamu clean up and the two of you lay down on Kita’s balcony to look at the stars.
“This is nice.” Your fingers intertwine with Osamu’s.
Osamu hums in response and squeezes your hand. “(Y/n)?”
“What’s up, my love?” He stands up and pulls you to your feet. “Is everything okay? You look a little flush. Did you drink enough water today?”
“Everythin’s fine. I’m gonna say a buncha things and I’m gonna need yah to listen closely, okay?”
“I’m listening.”
Osamu takes a deep breath and takes both of your hands in his. “(Y/n), do yah remember the day we met?”
“Please don’t remind me. I looked terrible.” You laugh.
“When yah walked into my door, I couldn’t even remember the most popular flavors at my own shop.” He shakes his head with a smile. “Suna and ‘Tsumu made fun of me for weeks. Mostly ‘cause I forgot to ask yah for yer name. They asked everyday if yah came in or not and I almost murdered them.”
“Would have saved me from a headache.”
“Shhh. Lemme finish.” Osamu rubs his thumbs on the back of your hands and keeps going. “When I finally learned yer name, I couldn’t stop thinkin’ about yah. It probably sounds dumb, but I’ve liked yah since we met. Yah really turned my life around even if yah didn’t mean to.”
Your heart starts thumping in your chest. Where is he going with this?
“I’ve been tryin’ to plan this special moment for weeks to tell yah all of the things that I love about yah. I guess now’s better than never.”
You bite your bottom lip to keep from crying. You look down at your intertwined hands with blurry eyes as he continues.
“I love the way yah smile at me, even after I piss yah off. I love the way yah get along with ‘Tsumu and Suna and everyone else important in my life. I love the way your eyes shine when yah eat something you like or watch yer favorite show or do somethin’ yah love to do. I love the way yer hands feel in mine and the way yah scratch my head after a long day at work. I love wakin’ up to yah and kissin’ yah good mornin’ and makin’ yah breakfast. I love fallin’ asleep next to yah and snugglin’ with yah even though yah hate it.”
Someone behind you clears their throat and Osamu nods his head.
“Alright, I’m getting’ to the point.” Osamu drops to one knee and fishes for something in his pocket. “I’ve been tryin’ to ask yah for weeks now, but everythin’ keeps goin’ to shit.”
He pulls out a small black box and grins at you, eyes welling with tears. “I love yah. So fuckin’ much. Will yah stay with me for a while longer?” He opens the box, and a simple diamond ring sits in the middle. “As my wife?”
You open your mouth to speak, but all that comes out is a whine. Osamu laughs and wipes the tears streaming down your face as you nod frantically.
“Yah mean it?” He whispers as he slides the ring on your finger. It fits perfectly.
“Yes, you idiot!” You shout through sobs.
Osamu cups your face and kisses you gently. You hear a few hollers of happiness behind you as Osamu pulls you into a crushing hug. You were crying into Osamu’s chest when you felt multiple bodies hug all around you. Atsumu on your left, Suna on your right, and Sakusa ruffling your hair.
They explained that all of them quickly hopped on a train after Osamu said he was finally going to propose. Osamu’s mom and Gram were there, and your parents were watching via video chat. You were surrounded by love and happiness. And you planned on keeping a tight hold on it.
~You beat me, huh?~
I guess I did.
~Are you going to get rid of me now that you’re happy?~
I don’t think I could if I tried.
~Then what are we doing?~
We’re going to learn to live together. You’re not going to keep me from being happy. You’re not going to keep me from anything I want to do. No more doubts. No more negativity.
~Hmm? Sounds a lot like getting rid of me.~
Remember what you told me a while ago?
~I’ve said a lot of things, you’re going to have to clarify.~
Sweetheart, you are me.
