Shouto figured he would be in a situation like this at some point, he just never expected it to be him the one bleeding out on the ground of an alley, a puddle of blood around him, and a knife sticking out of his abdomen. He didn’t pull it out, he knew better than that, the villain managed to get the drop on him, stabbing him in the abdomen before running far away, away from any heroes that might come.
He could have stayed, it seemed like there weren’t any heroes coming. Shouto doubted that there were, anyways. No one knew he was here. His father probably would, but he wouldn’t come looking for him until long after he bled out. Now that he thinks about it, this probably isn’t a bad way to go.
He could just close his eyes, sleep, and just… never wake up. Would it be that bad?
Thoughts of his mother, Fuyumi, Natsuo, Midoriya, and all his classmates and teachers came to mind but were quickly dismissed. They wouldn’t really miss him that much. They would be fine in the end, and maybe it was best that he was gone. People he cared about, the people around him, just got hurt when he was around. And it was always because of him. Always.
“Hey, Shouto. Keep your eyes open.”
Shouto blinked his eyes open, staring up at a blurry figure covering his view of the sky. It took him a moment to process who it was, eyebrows furrowing.
“‘Yumi?” He muttered. “What are you doing… here?”
“I was out with Natsuo when we found you.” She replied, placing her hands on his cheeks. She was kneeling behind his head, leaning forward so that he didn’t have to tilt his head back to look at her. He felt a sharp sting at the wound and he hissed.
“Sorry, Shouto.” Natsuo muttered. Shouto moved his head enough to look at his brother, seeing how his brother was pressing against his abdomen, stopping more blood from pouring out onto the ground. “Keep talking, stay awake.”
Shouto nodded, taking a steadying breath as he thought of something to talk about. “My classmates have been trying to teach me how to cook. They’re tired of seeing how I do breakfast. With the… breakfast smoothies.”
Natsuo snorted. “Even I’m grossed out by those. I don’t know how you can drink blended up eggs, fish, and rice.”
The corner of Shouto’s lips quirked up. “It’s not that bad.”
"If they're willing to teach you how to cook, it's that bad," Natsuo grumbled. "Where are the damn paramedics? Didn't we say you were bleeding out?"
"Maybe I should go. See if I can see them and wave them down." Fuyumi said softly, running a hand over Shouto's hair. He let out a small hum, leaning into her touch.
He blinked up at the sky, barely paying attention to what the two of them were saying after that. They called the paramedics. Would he get in trouble for using his quirk? He didn't think so, he had his license didn't he?
A nap was sounding really nice right now. Sleep was always a good way to forget the pain. Just drift off and deal with it later. Sleeping through most of the pain. Most of the time he would just wake up with sore muscles in the morning.
"Shouto, don't you dare. Open your eyes." Fuyumi said, holding his face. "Keep talking."
Natsuo shifted. "Talk, uh… tell us about your crush."
Shouto's eyes groggily opened. "Why would I talk about that?"
Natsuo had a small grin. "So you do have a crush."
"Natsuo, leave it. He doesn't have to tell us about his crush."
"C'mon, Yumi! You can't tell me you don't want to know."
"I'm not saying that." She grumbled.
Their banter was stopped when they heard the siren and saw the lights getting closer. Both of his siblings let out a sigh of relief when they saw the emergency vehicle stop and a group of paramedics with a stretcher rushed towards them. One of them leaned down beside Shouto, checking him over and shining a light in his eyes. Shouto weakly swatted at the hand on his face, and the hand holding the little light.
"Concussion. I don't think it's too bad, though. You two did great, thanks for keeping him awake." They said, their companions quickly moving Shouto onto the stretcher. Shouto hissed as a sharp pain hit him.
Fuyumi nodded as she stood up, following as they placed Shouto into the ambulance. There was a lot going on now, Shouto was having a hard time keeping up with everything that was happening. He watched as paramedics rushed around him, watched as Fuyumi and Natsuo climbed in with them. Felt as the ambulance started to move, jostling on the stretcher.
He turned his head to the side where his siblings were, feeling as Fuyumi slipped her hand into his. He gave it a light squeeze as Natsuo put his hand over both of theirs.
He honestly wasn't sure what would have happened if his siblings weren't there. And he was glad it was them and not someone else.
They were saying something as the ambulance stopped, and he fought not to let go as he was wheeled into the hospital, his siblings quickly left behind. His breath caught in his throat as he watched them getting farther and farther away. It reminded him of when he was young, when his father kept him separated from his siblings. When his mother got taken away from him.
One of the paramedics was talking to him. He couldn't make out what it was. He blinked up at them, feeling his lungs burning.
Oh. He should probably breathe. He took a deep breath, coughing.
"That's it, kid. Breathe. Everything is going to be okay. Your siblings will be there when you wake up, I promise." They were talking, their voice was soft, soothing. He relaxed, staring up at them. He was okay. He's going to be okay.
The person kept talking to him as other nurses and doctors moved around them. They had stopped in a room. People were doing things, moving around. But just listening to their voice kept him from panicking. It was easier than focusing on the person pressing a mask to his face, than the person cutting his shirt open.
"Just close your eyes, okay? You'll be fine, just keep breathing, go to sleep, and you'll be perfectly fine in the morning."
He was inclined to believe them as he let his eyes close, immediately drifting off.
