“stop— stop calling me that!” she screams, her hands pounding against his chest, and it reminds him too much of that one evening twelve years ago. how her face, red and teary, had betrayed the bravery that she had mustered in hopes of an honest answer. how his stomach had felt like it had housed creeping bugs at the intensity of her expression and at the crawling realisation that regardless of what he says or does, everything would change.
he’d lied then; ran away. and, for what? to end up living through a lifetime full of regrets and dreams where he’d made a different choice from the reality he’d set upon himself.

Summary
A shadow moves through his blurry vision. It stops at the foot of his bed.
“Hi, Bob.” Yelena plops down on his comforter by his feet, afflicted. “So, quick question. How would you feel about sneaking out in the middle of the night to do things I cannot disclose but will go and do anyway, and also would you still like me if I was a worm?”
The stream of words slip in one ear and exit out the other, barely registering as he flutters his eyes. He retains enough that his sleep-addled brain manages to provide one simple thought.
Oh. This is what having a best friend is like.
And then, out of nowhere, two other, more worrying simultaneous thoughts:
‘Why a worm of all things?’ and ‘I’m ruining this friendship immediately.’
Or: RIP Bob Reynolds, Studio Killers sang it better.

After Yelena turns her recurring alarm off and accepts the usual towel from him to dry off—but before she can grab her bag and leave—he blurts out, “Where are you going?”
His heart is pounding in his chest as she halts in her movements and stares up at him with surprise. She hesitates, then says, “Catching up with a friend.”
No mouth twitch. But— The red flush on her cheeks. The one that built up from the last hour she spent flawlessly pivoting and stabbing a dagger at an imaginary force. It deepens.
She starts blushing.
He’s losing his mind.
Or
Yelena has a secret.
Bob gets to the bottom of it (and maybe learns a few extra things as well).

Wanda’s head snaps up. Her arms are full of logs. Her eyes are wide and green.
He holds out a hand, his hand, his ghost hand, snow hand, it is his hand, he thinks, “Please don’t scream.”
Wanda screams. The logs drop and clatter and thud into thick snow and she lifts a hand to her mouth to smother the sound.

The Vision wakes up in a field, someplace. His skin is white. He knows what he's meant to do.
It is hard to warm up your wife when you seem to be made of ice.

“What is it?” He sounds blank to even his own ears. “Where did it come from?”
“Her bedtime’s at seven. Should be easy. She’s a good girl.” Wanda clunks the heavy bag down. “Got it?”
Vision stares at the child. “Do I have a choice?”
(He does not.)

After their divorce due to his lack of emotional capacity, Vision is notably bewildered when Wanda drops a child at his doorstep with little warning and instruction.
What better way to flip that pesky feelings switch than a little bit of parental overwhelm?
