Summary
As with any sporting event, the Poughkeepsie Regatta has its traditions and rituals. Some of these are stoic and dignified. Some are not.
The post-race “revenge” against the coxswains is very much in the latter category.
Bobby Moch would do almost anything to see the East Coast teams knocked down a peg - wearing a dress for one party is nothing to him. Of course, that doesn't mean that it's not everything to someone else.

That looming deadline is why he’s considering this thrice-damned fucking foolish plan. He’ll probably never have a chance like this again, in a whole host of ways: to be touched by someone he’s in love with, to have a ready-made escape, to have such an excuse to approach in the first place… To lay claim to an experience that Don will never have with someone else.
Bobby is graduating soon, and intends to leave Seattle within weeks. He hopes to soothe the loss with something that will be precious to him, and nothing more than a favour to Don.

The reality is that Don is feeling too much for a man who should just be one of his best friends. And Don does cherish that friendship, more than anything, but he can’t let this continue. If he does then one day it’ll all come out, either in a touch that lasts too long or in words Don won’t be able to keep holding back, and it’ll destroy him. Hell, it might destroy them both: if Bobby was to realise the sorts of things his dear friend has been wanting and thinking and dreaming of, surely that would gut him too.
Don has been in love with Bobby almost since meeting him. When some asshole throws a crude insult into the mix it nearly drives the tall stroke insane - and forces the situation to a head.

Bobby knows he must’ve been sitting for hours now, regardless that he can’t remember any of it. The Sunday afternoon sky has dimmed down into a rust-edged twilight, and his body aches worse than after even the longest practices. He must’ve been stiff as a board; when he tries to stand, his joints shoot pain from his ankles all the way up to the nape of his neck.
