To save my soul?” He speaks derisively and his lips press together, as if recalling a distasteful memory. Rey senses the embers of his own anger rising to meet hers through their bond’s echo.
She draws herself to her full height and stares him directly in the eyes. “You’re beyond saving.”
“That is what you and others don’t understand. I never wanted it in the first place.”

Ten months after the Battle of Crait, the Last Jedi and the Supreme Leader of the First Order have kept their bond tightly shut, allowing the seeds of their mutual rejection to blossom into hurt and anger. When the location of the Resistance base is revealed, Rey must make the ultimate sacrifice: the lives of her allies and friends, in exchange for yielding her freedom to the First Order, indefinitely.
But new threats soon lead to the discovery that Rey cannot draw lines between the Dark and the Light as easily as she once thought, and blur the boundaries between hatred, lust, and—eventually—a deeper bond than neither she nor Kylo Ren could have ever conceived of.

Scholarship student Rey Niima feels like an outsider at the exclusive Vassar College until she discovers a prosocial way to channel her frustration: the NCAA Division 3 Vassar Fencing Team, which needs another female fencer to compete at the upcoming regional collegiate meet. There's just the small—or rather large—issue of the team's volatile leader, who seems determined to put Rey in her place by landing a touch on her.
Rey isn't sure what kind of touch, and she's become pretty good at parrying. But how will she riposte to Ben Organa-Solo's attacks, both on and off the fencing piste?

“No,” Rey laces her fingers through his own, “I’m not angry. I needed you and you came.”
Her other hand rises slowly from her side, and she reaches tentatively for his face. Ben leans into her gentle touch, and she swipes at his tears with her thumb before tracing along the silvery line of his scar.
“When I reached out to you through the bond, I told you that I regretted not taking your hand that day, in the throne room. I meant it.”
Ben believes that the bond is gone, shattered on Crait. Then one night it is blasted open again. Rey reaches out to him, sick and dying. Delirious with fever she pleads with him to come to her. She needs him. What can he do but go to her side?

Summary
The bond, Ben is convinced- or the Force, or the lingering remnants of Snoke’s power, or whatever keeps patching them through to each other at the worst possible moment- has a sorry sense of humor.
This, though- walking out of the fresher with a towel around his waist, wearing considerably less than the memorable moment when she had asked him if he had a cowl, or something, only to find her standing next to his bed- might be the worst joke the bond has played to date.
(Someone spikes Rey's drink, and the bond decides this is Ben's problem.)
