    Todd rounds his mouth to say something but no sound comes. What happens instead is that Neil’s gaze flickers down to his useless mouth.
    This can’t be nothing. This feels like a mountaintop, a treacherous one.
    Tremulously, Todd allows his own eyes to stray to the rounds of Neil’s lips. Allows in just a sliver of a thought.
    “What was…” Neil says, then stops. He swallows. His Adam’s apple bobs. “What was the poem about, Todd?”
    Todd’s kidding himself. He’d never shut out his thoughts. That’s an impossible thing to do. All he’d managed was to ignore their insistent calls. And now, he’s thinking he might unplug his ears.
    The way Neil had said his name had been different to how he usually spoke it. Like it was daunting yet precious.
