His stepfather did not hit him because he was drunk. He hit him, and sometimes he was drunk when he did it. Giorno didn't freeze up the same way whenever the TV was turned on, or when he saw people wearing a collared shirt and tie. Correlation did not equal causation.
Giorno told himself that over and over again, but it never managed to stop the tight ball that wound up in his chest whenever his parents had a beer with dinner.
Or: Giorno gets anxious when people around him are drunk, and he can't seem to shake it.

Sighing, Hans rubbed his temples. It was so easy for any sort of interaction to go wrong with this man, and yet, he couldn’t shake him off at all. As the wagon’s wheels scraped against the dirt and the horses’ hooves dragged them to their camp, they settled into silence- not wholly uncomfortable, yet missing the usual warmth that would reignite Hans’ spirits.
