Summary
At the end of Max’s second year at camp Campbell with Neil and Nikki, a bus-explosion accident causes all the campers to have to be picked up by their parents. When Max’s parents never come and he finds out news about his mom, one thing leads to another. Before he knows it, he’s outside of David’s house, with nothing but a backpack and a soaking wet hoodie.

“I think that no matter what I did, no matter what I could’ve tried, it would’ve all stayed that way. Maybe that was what taught me that you can’t change people, no matter how much you want it, no matter how hard you try.”
Slowly, processing all the information that David fed him, Max let it settle and digest.
Max understood what he meant. He absently thought back to the first few weeks of summer, where he had made the decision that he was going to break David’s spirit, no matter what it took, and felt a weight drop in his stomach.
Even then, David handled that situation the best he could, and now he could put the picture together.
No matter how hard he had tried back then, every plot, every scheme, every successful prank that, back home, would have his ass in a casket faster than you could blink, David never broke, never once snapped, and always regained that pep in his step no matter how hard he’d been put through the wringer just hours before.
You can’t change people, no matter how much you want it, no matter how hard you try.
God damn.

Max was no stranger to nightmares.
They didn’t come every night, but a few days a week, he would be forced into consciousness with his breaths coming in fast and heavy, sweat beading on his forehead with little else going through his brain other than the sound of shouting, of bottles breaking, of slammed doors.
If he caught his eyes drooping, he’d lug himself back to bed. If they never did, well, it’s not like his dark circles would be noticed, in school or… otherwise.
Unfortunately, in the all-too-familiar hellscape of Camp Campbell, where the asshole self-assigned to looking after you mutters tree names under his breath in sleep and has his ringtone set to ‘Accidentally in Love’ from the Shrek 2 soundtrack, this lack of attention is, well, lacking.
