Summary
As Jack lowered his hand and shook off the condensation he’d wiped from the glass, he got a good look inside and froze.
Because he knew who this was lying beneath him in this rusty metal box. Despite being submerged under icy water and a face mask covering the majority of her face, he knew those loose black curls and high cheekbones immediately.
“No fucking way,” Jack stuttered under his breath, before raising his voice, “ROBBY!”

Summary
Jack watched Samira’s whole body freeze up, the colour draining from her face as her lungs started to struggle to take in oxygen, her eyes began to dart around the room and look towards where Perla was looking over a chart approaching the hub.
The hair on the back of Jack’s neck rose up as he watched Samira start to hyperventilate in front of him, “Samira, are you ok-”
Samira frantically looked between where Perla was talking to someone and looked around their vicinity until she spotted the gap underneath the desk in front of them, and without hesitation she dropped to her knees and scrambled to crawl beneath the desk.

Summary
He thinks of her often. Relentlessly. He can’t seem to think of anything else.
And that was the irony of it all; his life had narrowed in the past ten years into a pitiful existence. What else was there, besides her? She was everything. At work, at home, on the roof. She followed him, her presence haunting spaces she’d never even visited.

Summary
“Look at him, Samira,” Jack says. The words seem lodged in his throat. He's forcing them out. “Sweetheart fucking face. And they were gonna kill him.”
He kisses the dog on the top of its head. And Samira usually finds that sort of behavior foreign and disgusting, but she puddles just a little more when she sees Jack Abbot do it.
“So you took a chance on him?” she says.
“What can I say?” Jack lifts the tags on his dog’s collar with a crook of his finger. Samira watches as they slide, metal on metal, identifying information, dents and dings—and she sees it, she aches as she sees it, that scrape of metal limbs and dog tags in gray matter memories. “I'm a sucker for lost fucking causes.”
-
Jack rescues a tripod dog with a history of violence. Samira learns what they each have in common.
