“Colin, my lad, us’ll find thee, and when tha’rt caught-” roared Dickon’s voice through the garden, leaving Colin’s future fate hanging to the imagination.
Colin shivered and ducked back into the small copse of bracken, just big enough for one slim adult male.
It wasn’t actually fair.

“Art tha’ awake, then?” called the deep voice of Dickon.
“I am,” Colin told him, sitting up.
“Tha’st slept a long hour or three,” Dickon said, rising and coming to perch on the edge of his bed, looking down at Colin with a small smile of satisfaction.
“What?” Colin asked him, hunching his shoulders slightly while scrubbing at his face.
“Tha’ looks good like that,” Dickon said with a wider grin.
Colin rolled his eyes before he remembered his resolve not to do that anymore.

“It’s no good, the two of us rattling around this stuffy old house,” declared Colin one night, putting his feet down on the floor with a thump that made Mary look up from her book. She considered him with an appraising glance, head tilting just a little. The society papers had long praised her birdlike grace and delicate feminine charm, and every one of his university mates had equally decried her thorny wit and shrewd tongue. Colin rather preferred their mournful tales of how she’d savaged one or the other whilst dancing; they gave him a thrill, for she was quite tame with him.
“Another wild scheme of yours?” she murmured wryly. “Shall we be uprooted, Colin? Transplanted to a smaller plot?”
