And it worked just fine, it did… Until two nights turned into five, or six, or ten, until Mikey liked a lot more things about Pete than just the way he kissed.
Until he found himself lying in bed, thinking about Pete’s smile and his jittery hands and his voice and his hair falling onto his hypnotizing eyes and fuck- he knew he was done for. Last time he had seeked someone’s presence that desperately, it had almost killed him. And so he buried it and started to act like an asshole (he was aware, and he felt guilty, cause Pete deserved better, but what was a boy to do), he even completely stopped being in the same room as him. Or replying to his texts. Or smiling at him when they were in the same room.

It stuck out, compared to the others. The enveloppe was black, Gerard’s name written on top of it in white Sharpie. He knew who wrote it, he would’ve recognized the unique curves of those e’s anywhere. But it seemed so… serious. So out of character from the one who had written it.

or: Ten years ago, Frank and Gerard had a summer fling that felt a lot like love. The last decade hasn't been easy for either of them, and now they're both leading lives they never planned for. Gerard is the reluctant owner of a failing bookstore left to him by his grandmother, staying sober and keeping the place open and not doing much else. Frank is a reluctant corporate broker, white-knuckling sobriety by not staying in one place too long, buying buildings for companies he doesn't respect.
When their current lives intersect over six weeks, they confront who they are, who they were, and the feelings they never fully grew out of.
