    Summary

“You’ve spent the last twenty-four hours implying that I killed my husband,” Eddie snapped, sounding a little feral to his own ears, “you refused to help me, refused to listen to me, and now you want us to be separated? Would you ask a straight couple to separate? Isn’t it a legally recognised right to be with your partner during times of duress?” Eddie was absolutely lying on that last point, he had no idea if that was true. He knew they couldn’t be called to testify on each other, but, more to the point, they weren’t even married.

Buck didn’t speak, he stared at Eddie with big eyes, like he was waiting to wake up in some cage all over again.

“I’ve been through hell today to get him back, I am not leaving him alone with some backwater, homophobic asshole of a police force for another second.”

“Mr Diaz, I hope you realise I could have you arrested for—”

“For what? Being rightfully protective? Does your town have the money for a Hollywood discrimination suit? Because his step-mother is an LAPD sergeant and I am feeling extremely litigious.”

    Summary

He doesn’t think he’s got it wrong, his attraction to men, his attraction to Tommy, but he feels out of step. Sex has always been something he could rely on, he’s good at it, finding the point of compatibility with every one night stand, every long term relationship, but with Tommy something’s not quite clicking. If he’d realized sooner he would have more experience, could have gotten this fumbling uncertainty, this disconnect, out of his system with guys that don’t matter.

Buck spent a lot of time with desire in his early twenties, he knows passion and lust. He’s thought with his dick more than his head or his heart plenty and he's never claimed to be perfect, as often as a hookup used him he used them right back, for attention, distraction, a misplaced cure for loneliness; a bruise that feels too good to stop pressing down on.

But the thing he’s always craved, in a relationship, a partnership, is intimacy that allows for deeper connection. He still wants spontaneity, he still wants desire, and he didn’t think those things would have to be sacrificed for understanding and commitment.

    Summary

‘I love you, you know,’ Buck says, quiet, a confession tucked between Eddie’s ribs, beneath his beating heart.

Eddie shifts, turning his head, nose brushing against Buck’s ear, his breath a warm puff of air on his cheek, ‘oh, yeah? I love you too.’

It stills Buck’s heart to get that response, a held breath, an arrhythmic stop-start. It’s the answer he’d so longed to hear but shaken loose by alcohol, a tease, a joke. Not on purpose, Eddie wouldn’t do that, but they were messing around and Eddie probably thinks he’s following that thread. People think they’re a couple often enough, Chimney jokes about work husbands every other shift, and it would be fine, if Buck wasn’t bone deep, achingly in love with him, he could laugh along with it too.

Instead he sits back so he can see Eddie properly, sober enough he knows making choices he might regret, drunk enough to follow through regardless.

‘No, I mean I’m in love with you.’

‘Yeah,’ says Eddie, nodding, ‘of course, me too.’

    Summary

Eddie is halfway to the car before he realizes he’s forgotten his wallet, turning on his heel to go back and fetch it. He isn’t exactly trying to be quiet as he lets himself back into the house, scanning the living room until he spots his wallet on the coffee table, and at first he thinks Buck has heard him, is speaking to him from the kitchen, an explanation on the tip of his tongue before he hears Maddie’s voice, tinny over speakerphone.

    ‘How’s it going?’

There’s a pause that feels weighted and when Buck finally speaks, there’s a false cheer to it that Eddie really doesn’t like, ‘great! I love having them home.’

    Summary

Buck comes to visit when Eddie has been in El Paso three and a half months.

It’s not like they’ve not been in touch. They text everyday, facetime nearly as often; Buck sending an ongoing running commentary of what’s happening at the 118, Eddie responding with updates on Chris. Eddie’s texts are more hopeful than he really feels, Buck’s are too cheerful.

Things are fine in El Paso. They’re just not where Eddie hoped they’d be after nearly four months; Chris still distant, his parents obstructive, Eddie not quite arrived, one foot still in LA and no closer to a true reconciliation with his son.
