“Hey, are you okay?”
Chi Cheng’s voice was soft but hoarse, “Fine.”
But Shuai didn’t believe it for a second. He reached out and pressed his palm lightly to Chi Cheng’s forehead. The heat radiated sharply, it was too high.
“Fine? You’re burning up,” Shuai said quietly, a tight knot forming in his chest. He let out a low sigh, caught between frustration and concern. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
Chi Cheng blinked, eyes glassy but still steady. “I didn’t want to bother anyone.”
“Bother? You’re sick Chi,” Shuai said, stepping closer and wrapping his arms around Chi Cheng’s still-weak frame. Chi Cheng clung to him instantly, nuzzling into his neck like he was holding on for dear life.

Chi stepped closer, the space between them evaporating until Shuai could almost feel the heat of Chi’s breath. “Fail,” he whispered, black as night despite the daylight, “and I’ll go back to my old ways. You'll take his place. I can't bring myself to force him, but you? I won't hold back. I won’t be gentle, Shuai.”
His words stabbed deep, opening up scars that had barely scabbed over.
Chi Cheng noticed the sudden tremble in Shuai’s frame, the sharp, shallow breaths, the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it flicker of panic in his eyes. Something primal stirred beneath Chi’s cold exterior, fear, yes, but also a raw, aching concern.
Everything happened fast.
