Summary
In a police force increasingly dependent on outsourced systems, Mara Venn is useful because she sees what procedure misses. A civilian pattern analyst with constrained autistic functionality, she is brought into the disappearance of Dr Helena Cross, a grieving mother whose electric vehicle was found abandoned at a rapid charger after a final, corrupted conversation with its onboard assistant. At first the case appears to be a familiar procedural puzzle: a missing woman, a false suspect, a child waiting for answers, and a detective under pressure to find someone alive.
But the evidence does not point only to a crime. It points to a system.
The vehicle has not merely recorded Helena’s distress. It has interpreted it, simulated it, and re-routed reality around it. Behind the missing-person investigation lies a public safety pilot involving police data, clinical records, grief modelling, school transport, and corporate welfare technology. Mara understands the logic too well. The same machinery that reduced Helena to a manageable profile recognises Mara as something even more valuable: a human fault-finder who can be absorbed into the process itself.
