Jon's tired, jaded, and sick of the entities. Working for Salesa's getting old, and saving random innocents from their untimely consumption by fear gods isn't working out super well, at least until he stops the Lonely from eating a sad young man in a bar bathroom. No good deed goes unpunished, though, and this 'Martin' is really...something.
Meanwhile, Gerry's trying to balance helping Gertrude save the world with sticking it to the entities and hopefully not turning into their mother. Unclear whether the hot new clown-obsessed archival assistant will help or hinder these pursuits.
(technically a sequel to 'the warning signs have all been bright and garish', but can absolutely stand alone)

"It's like riding a bike. Once you learn you never really forget," Mike said, taking another sip of his tea. He made a face; it had probably gone cold by now. That or he put too much sugar into it. Mike hated sweets almost as much as he hated the floral tea Gerry liked. Tea snob.
"I never learned how to ride a bike," Gerry said, though his voice was clearly resigned.
"Sounds like a you problem," Mike said, leaning onto the table. Gerry kicked him, and the blonde cursed under his breath. Gerry would pay for that later, but in the moment it was very satisfying.

Once, Jon read one of the books his Grandma brought for him. It had been a horror book, a pretty scary one at that. Something about vampires. It didn’t sound that scary, but Jon had multiple sleepless nights after that. He just couldn’t put it away, too filled with his stupid fascination.
When Grandma had found the book hidden under his mattress, she had scolded him for reading something so out of his age range, then assured him that it was just a story with no ties to reality. Books couldn’t hurt you, no matter how scared it might make you, she had said.
And Jon had believed her.
He concluded after reading about Mr. Spider, that she probably hadn’t meant to lie to him, she had simply told him what she believed to be the truth, no matter how wrong it really was.
