After being freed from CLU’s corruption in 2010, it became safer to travel between it and the real world. In 2020, information regarding The Grid became public via an ENCOM data breach, caused by an unknown party. Today, a rogue AI known as ARES; created by a rival corporation known as ATLAS, has discovered the link between The Grid and the real world, and plans to merge the two together.
