Summary
“Two years since Goose died,” he fills in, stomach sinking when Maverick nods. Two years. The anniversary. How the hell did he not see this coming?
“Mav…” Ice starts, his voice quieter now, but Maverick cuts him off, his tone sharper than Ice expected.
“Don’t,” Maverick snaps, looking away. “I don’t need a lecture, and I don’t need your pity.”
-----
On the two-year anniversary of Goose's death, Mav is spiralling. After finding him in a bar fight, Ice helps him come to terms with it.

Summary
But before he can fire, the comms crackle with a voice that freezes him in place. Calm. Sharp. Unmistakable.
“Exercise terminated. Return to base.”
Maverick’s heart skips. He knows that voice. His grip on the stick tightens as his gaze snaps to the F-14. The Tomcat rolls to the side, peeling away as a chill runs through him.
“Ice,” Maverick breathes.
“Return to base, Mitchell,” Ice repeats, his tone cold and unyielding. “Now.”
------
Training to fly on the F-18, Mav is having trouble with the changes in the squadron and to Ice's position, and he acts out. Ice is there to reel him back in.

Summary
Ice forces himself to keep his voice level as he presses down on the mic. “Maverick, I am ordering you to stand down. Return to your patrol route immediately.”
There’s a beat of silence, and then Maverick’s voice comes back, crackling with static—too convenient to be genuine. “Ice… you’re breaking up. Comms interference… might be that bogey I’m trailing.”
------
Maverick ignores direct orders on a mission, faking comms interference. When he gets his ass back on deck Ice has a long conversation with him about following orders.

Summary
“I have spent the last six months worried sick about you,” Ice says. “So maybe stop acting as if I walked in here looking for reasons to take somebody else’s side.”
“Oh,” Maverick says quietly.
The word comes out small enough to irritate him on principle.
---
It's 1994. Ice returns to the squadron after months away at the Naval Postgraduate School and promptly discovers that six months of deployment, command changes, and far too little sleep have left Maverick in a thoroughly impossible mood. Misunderstandings ensue. So do consequences.
Or: Maverick has a lot of feelings about not quite feeling like he fits in without Ice by his side.
