Summary
“Stay down,” Stark demanded and pressed an iron hand against his shoulder, as if Peter was even entertaining the notion of standing. “That was a nasty spill, kid. FRIDAY says you’ve got a concussion and a couple broken ribs. We need to get you back to the Tower, have Medical check you out–“
“No!” Peter’s eyes flew open. Tony looked down at him, frowning with equal parts guilt, concern, and confusion. “I mean, uh – that’s just – not necessary. I have super healing. Radioactive spider bite, remember? Give me five minutes.”
More like five hours – but no way in hell was he going to tell Stark that.
A medical examination at Avengers Tower might mean taking blood and DNA samples.
Blood and DNA samples would reveal, clear as day, Spider-Man’s crippling addiction to heroin.
-----
When the Avengers stumble upon Peter Parker, he is not a fifteen year old, bubbly, nerdy high school student. He is eighteen, homeless, and a drug addict.
Peter refuses to let them discover the squalor he lives in when the mask is off, refuses to ruin their perfect little makeshift family with all his dirt, refuses to get too close.
Unfortunately, he doesn't really have a choice.

Summary
Shadows danced across the walls, taunting him as he screamed, writhed, and cried. They hovered above him on the ceiling and threatened to devour him whole.
“Please, please, no, please…”
A hand cupped his face. Something cool and wet moved across his forehead.
“It’s not real, kid. Whatever you’re seeing, it isn’t real. You’ve got a fever. You’re hallucinating.”
They looked real – they felt real. How could they not be real?
“Mister Stark. Don’t let them get me. Don’t leave.”
“Already told you, kid, I’m not going anywhere. You’ve got me.”
Peter drifted.

Accepting Tony's help, difficult as it was, turns out to be the easiest part of Peter's day.

Summary
Peter was supposed to feel happy.
In the dark of the common room at midnight with a blanket wrapped around his shoulders, knees tucked against his chest and eyes locked blank on the cityscape below, Peter felt nothing.
The quieting. The decrescendo. The fall. The comedown -
It always found him.
-----
Peter can't sleep. Luckily, neither can Tony.

Summary
Peter was finally starting to get used to life in Avengers Tower.
His walls were adorned with five-dollar Star Wars posters (despite Mister Stark offering repeatedly to buy him nicer décor). He knew how to get to the kitchen without somehow finding himself on the wrong floor, and was comfortable enough helping himself to things in said kitchen. In the lab, a written copy of his web formula was taped to the wall next to a work table Tony had gladly designated as Peter’s own.
The smell of coffee he didn’t drink and the sound of laughter in the morning made him smile. His body still ached and his mood had yet to stabilize, but his cravings for the heroin that had once been his lifeblood grew weaker, easier to overpower with each passing day. Peter was finding his groove in this new life; Peter was adjusting.
It just sucked that nobody but Tony seemed to want him there.
-----
Not everyone in the Tower is as eager as Tony to take in a drug-addicted, orphaned teenager. Misunderstandings ensue.

Summary
Once Peter managed to get past the idea that every Avenger held an indiscriminate hatred for him based solely on his existence, things were – easier.
Not easy, but easier. Better. He smiled a little more, laughed on occasion, breathed with a little less struggle.
And he learned.
-----
The most important part of the healing process, Peter is beginning to understand, is relearning how to be himself.
Or: ten times Peter learned something new about an Avenger, and one time the Avengers learned something new about him.

Summary
Something sharp dug into his chest as he inhaled, scrolling through the news feed on his phone only to find article after article of, Have Captain America and Winter Solider Adopted a Child?
Peter Parker, High School Dropout: Tony Stark’s Newest Project?
The Mystery Avenger: Everything You Need to Know
Is There a New Avenger in Town?
Each one bore another blurred, low-quality photo of himself, looking out of place and nervous, clinging to Steve’s arm for dear life as they walked. He couldn’t help but wonder if anybody from his old life was scrolling through their news feed in shock, too. If Ned and MJ were watching from afar, confused and wondering.
“They didn’t even get my good side,” Peter joked weakly, because if he didn’t laugh he feared he might cry.

The entire world digs into the identity of this random teenager photographed walking Union Square with two Avengers. Peter panics.

Summary
“Shhh. It was just a bad dream, bud. You’re fine. Everything’s fine.”
Peter cried against Tony’s shoulder. He cried the last little bit of life left in his soul out onto a wrinkled pajama shirt. He cried and cried and cried.
“I’m not fine. I’m not fine. Nothing is fine.”
Spider-Man was the last thing that had been truly and wholly his. Now it was everyone’s and nobody’s. Free for the taking, for the studying, for the picking apart. Fair game.
“I know you’re not.” Tony, too, sounded close to tears, gripping Peter as if afraid he might disappear at any moment. It wasn’t exactly an irrational fear. “I know.”
Did he?
-----
In the aftermath of his unintentional identity reveal, Peter is beyond shaken.

Summary
Something dark and treacherous followed him through the streets as he swung. It was nameless, faceless, voiceless, but Peter knew it was there. He could feel it creeping up his back, threatening to dig its claws into his heart-thumping chest.
He had to get away. He had to get away. He had to get away.
I’m dreaming, his mind supplied, but it was no comfort, because he couldn’t fucking wake up.
“Mister Stark!” Peter called out into the cold night, praying the sound would somehow make it through to the real world. “Help! Mister Stark, please, I need help!”
No footsteps came running. The city remained unusually dark and empty, the peaceful silence of the night entirely undisturbed.
When the invisible monster finally caught up to him, dropped him onto the cold concrete, and began to tear him to shreds, it looked just like a full syringe.
-----
Peter has nightmares. He decides he'd rather deal with it on his own than worry Tony and the rest of the team. This turns out to be Not The Best Idea™.

Summary
This was exactly what Peter had imagined when he dreamed of becoming an Avenger. Spending his days helping people and saving lives. Coming home in the evening to a Tower full of people who were happy to have him around. The road up until now had been rough and uncertain, but everything had finally, finally fallen into place.
Peter kept his mouth shut about the bag of heroin beneath his mattress.
It wasn’t like he was going to use it.

Summary
Up hundreds of feet in the air, choking on his own vomit, Tony begging him to stay alive for just a few minutes longer. This was how he would die.
He was dying – and it was entirely his own fault.
I love you, he longed to say, just to make sure Tony knew, but all that came out was a weak groan. Thank you for everything. I love you. I’m sorry.
“You can’t check out on me, kid. Not here. Not like this. Another minute, okay? Peter, please.”
FRIDAY said, calm but with a tinge of regret, “Peter is no longer breathing.”
He drifted.
-----
In the wake of Peter's relapse, the team's trust in him - Tony's trust in him - is all but irreparably shattered.

Summary
“So what do you want?” Tony asked when Peter shuffled groggily into the kitchen one morning.
Peter, barely awake and sporting a serious case of bedhead, blinked a few times. “Huh?”
“For your birthday. What do you want?”
“How did–“ Peter stared at him with wide, incredulous eyes, suddenly feeling much more alert. “How did you know?”
“Don’t insult my intelligence.”
Clint pointed his fork in Peter’s direction and said through a mouthful of bacon, “Tell him nothing. I made the fatal mistake of admitting I wanted a new pickup truck last Christmas. He bought me five Ferraris. Five of them.”
Tony shrugged. “I couldn’t decide.”
“I live on a fucking farm! What the hell did you expect me to do with five Ferraris?”
Peter said faintly, “Please don’t buy me five Ferraris."
-----
Peter isn't much of a birthday person, and insists upon a no-gift policy when his nineteenth approaches. Tony isn't much of a rule-follower.

Summary
Having Ned and MJ back was like realizing, after months of trying desperately to assemble the puzzle of his life, that he’d been missing a vital piece all along.
It wasn’t that Peter hadn’t been trying hard enough, or that he couldn’t see the picture clearly in his mind. He wasn’t lacking the intelligence, lacking the drive, lacking the desire. He wasn’t inadequate; he hadn’t failed. The journey wasn’t futile. He’d just lost something important along the way.
Sure, the edges were a bit rough. The final image wasn’t quite as bright as it might have been had all the pieces not been lost or rained upon or trampled over in the first place; there was some damage that would be eased with time, and some that wouldn’t – but it was, finally, complete.
For the first time in nearly four years, Peter felt whole.
And then came the question:
Once the puzzle is whole, where does it go?
-----
Peter has been a great many things over the past six months. He has been an addict, a patient, a survivor. He has been shattered, picked up off the concrete, and repaired. He has been elated; he has been heartbroken; he has been sorry.
Now, he has to figure out what comes after sorry.
