Jim wraps lanky limbs around him, pressing his chest to Leonard’s back and hooking his chin over Leonard’s shoulder. “I’m worried about you,” he says, in a small earnest voice that’s so unlike Jim that Leonard’s chest twists at the sound. “Please? Let me help?”
It’s the tentative tremor in Jim’s voice that finally tears it out of him. “I have a written exam in Basic Flight coming up.”
Jim holds still, clearly waiting for more. When it doesn’t come, he says, “Okay…uh, is that…it?”
“If I pass, I go on to the practical.” Leonard’s stomach drops at the mere thought of piloting a shuttle. “But if I fail…”
“Yeah,” Jim says, knowing the consequences. Basic Flight is required for all Academy students, no matter their level. If you don’t check that box in your first year, that’s it. You’re out.
