Chapter Text

It was almost midnight, and Farkle wanted to go home more than anything.

December 31st, 2019, 11:27 PM.

Riley, being Riley, thought that it would be a great idea to have her friends (Maya, Farkle, and Lucas) over to stay up and watch the ball drop for new year’s eve. And while it sounds like a great and fun idea, it wasn’t. Well, for Farkle. Everyone else seemed to be having a great time.

And Farkle would be too if Lucas wasn’t here.

You see, about 3 days ago, Riley, Maya, Lucas, Farkle, and Zay were having a snowball fight, like they do every time it snows. They were having a great time. Until Lucas said that he had to go. His ‘Mama wanted him home’ or something.

About a half an hour later, everyone decided to go home. It was late, cold, and they were all starving. Farkle decided to walk over to the corner convenience store to change his clothes, since he didn’t want to go on the subway freezing cold in snow clothes. He walked into the bathroom of the place and changed quickly, shoving his wet clothes in his bag, before exiting.

When he left the convenience store, that’s when it changed.

Farkle looked to his left and saw none other than Lucas Friar talking to a pretty blond girl. He had a smile on his stupidly handsome face that infuriated Farkle so badly. He quickly hid before peeking over again. The girl had blue eyes and dirty blonde hair, similar to Farkle.

Farkle put the hood up on his navy blue hoodie and started walking quickly until he could no longer hear Lucas’s annoying sweet laughter, and the girl stupid high pitched voice. He couldn’t understand what they were saying, sadly. But he didn’t even want to know.

Farkle got on the subway and sat down, pulling his knees to his chest. Why would Lucas lie? To go hang out with a girl? Who even was that!? Farkle’s fists clenched in his jacket pockets as he waited for his stop which seemed like forever.

As soon as he got home, Farkle flopped onto his bed face down. There were a million thoughts running through his head. And although he’d never admit it, the one that hurt the most was;

‘Why can’t I be her?’

That brings us to today. Riley, Maya, Farkle, and Lucas, all in Riley’s living room with 2 mattresses on the floor. Farkle was still pissed at Lucas, not for talking to that stupid girl but more importantly, for lying.

They were all talking, laughing, sitting on the mattresses in front of the TV, besides Farkle, who decided to go to the bathroom.

He gazed at himself long and hard in the mirror. He noticed that his reflection was starting to blur a little, before he felt a tear roll down his cheek.

Huh.

Farkle’s eyes widened as he noticed himself crying. He quickly wiped his eyes and splashed water on his face.

‘If I were a girl, would Lucas like me?’ Farkle thought.

He sighed, glancing one last time in the mirror, and leaving the bathroom.

“Farkle, I gotta have a little chat with you,” Maya said, grabbing Farkle’s wrist and pulling him back into the bathroom.

“What?- Okay? What- What’s wrong?” Farkle’s asked, puzzled.

“Why have you been avoiding Ranger Rick all night?” She asked, her pale blue eyes meet Farkle’s.

“What? What are you talking about..” Farkle mumbled, lying. He was a horrible liar.

“Don’t lie to me, Farkle,” Maya replied, “Me and Riley were just talking about how you are being so quiet with him. What’s going on between you guys? Lover’s quarrel?” Maya added, wiggling her eyebrows.

“I- what? N-no, Maya! We aren’t- ugh, never mind,” Farkle blushed, the heat on his face traveling down to his neck. “Remember that time we went out in the snow a few days ago?” Farkle asked, to which Maya nodded. “He said he had to go home because his mom wanted him home. He.. he lied. I..” Farkle whispered quietly, afraid his voice would crack if he spoke any louder. “I saw him with a girl at the convenience store.”

Maya looked confused. “Ah, so you’re mad at him because he lied,” Maya concluded.

“Well it’s not j-just.. that… I,” Farkle started, afraid of basically outing himself. He looked down at Maya with a sadness in his eyes hoping she would understand.

“Wait-“ Maya said, staring into Farkle’s eyes. “Oh. You like Lucas?” She asked hesitantly, to which Farkle exhaled and nodded.

“Aw, Farkle, C’mere,” Maya said with open arms, that Farkle immediately walked into, feeling tears well up in his eyes. He buried his face in the crook of her neck and she wrapped her arms around his skinny frame.

“I- I can’t help it.. I know he’s not g-gay or anything but-“ Farkle sniffled, “I like him so much, Maya. And now he’s probably dating that other girl and-“
Farkle’s voice cracked.

“It’s alright, Farkle.” Maya pulled back from the hug, her hands on Farkle’s shoulders. His eyes were rimmed with red and shiny with tears, and he had tear tracks on his cheekbones. “C’mon, splash water on your face. It’ll make you feel better,” Maya said, to which Farkle obeyed. He rubbed his eyes slightly and looked in the mirror.

“Okay,” he said, inhaling deeply and exhaling. “Can we go back?”

“Not so fast,” Maya interrupted, which made the taller boy whine. “What are you gonna say to Ranger Rick? Are you gonna talk to him about it?”

“I.. I don’t know if I should..”

“C’monnn, Farkle, you gotta! It’s almost midnight, maybe you should tell him then.”

“INFRONT OF YOU AND RYLIE? absolutely not. You will make fun of me and Rylie will squeal like she just saw a bunch of puppies doing ballet on a rainbow or whatever she thinks about.”

“Yeah.. you’re right,” Maya said, looking to the floor. “Whatever! Just do it, Farkle, whenever you’re comfortable.”

“But what if he’s not gay or something!” Farkle said, panicked.

“Farkle,” Maya started, “I’ve seen the way he looks at you. There’s no way that’s platonic.”

Farkle blushed. “Okay fine.. I’ll tell him sometime. But- what about the other girl!”

“Farkle.” Maya interrupted. “Stop worrying so much.”

“Okay fine..” Farkle mumbled. He opened the bathroom door and walked out with Maya.

It was 11:49. 10 minutes and 53 seconds until the ball drop, Farkle calculated.

This was going to be a long night.
