Work Text:

"We will spare Earth if he picks one of us to rule it alongside him," Sendak said with a grin, "Think of it as a way for The Champion to welcome us to his lovely planet."

"And why in the world would we do that?"

"We'll destroy this primitive planet and decorate our ships with your heads!" A Galra General hissed.

"Fine," Adam said, his eyes focused on the floor a few feet in front of him. "I'll pick one of you to take over Earth."

"With you at our side, it's what we're owed after the trouble The Champion put us through," Sendak said.

"No, we are not agreeing to this! We can't even be certain you won't destroy Earth anyways," Sam said.

"Why would we destroy Earth with The Champion's precious Adam at our side? The sight alone would be enough to defeat Voltron." Sendak spoke like this was the most common thing ever.

Adam just hid his hands behind his back before gripping his wrist in an iron grip.

"Like I said, I'll pick one you," Adam said, "But, only after I complete the wedding gift."

Adam looked up to see confusion and anger cross the Generals faces.

"A wedding gift?" Sendak growled.

"An act of truce," Adam said, "To show that we are allies."

Adam stared at the piece in front of him. It was made up of Galra and Human threads and was forming a unification of the two forces. It was less then halfway done- something that Adam was trying to keep from changing.

"Do you have to make this?" Ezor asked.

She, Zethrid, Luka, and Bandor showed up a little after Sam did and immediately imprinted on him.

"Yes," Adam said.

"But it's so repetitive," Luka said as she looked over Adam's shoulder, "And the threads are different textures, how are you not trying to maim people?"

Adam shrugged, "Practice."

"You've made wedding gifts before?" Bandor asked.

"No," Adam said, "Funeral shrouds."

This gift and a funeral shroud were one in the same. Adam was going to die once he makes his choice- even if it wasn't a physical death, it'd still be his death. And so he was preparing his own funeral shroud.

"What's a funeral shroud?"

"A piece of cloth you wrap the body with," Adam said.

His answer caused a collective hum of acknowledgement before it fell silent. The only noise coming from the threads being undone and woven within each other.

However, it didn't last long as soon the sounds of the doors opening and loud chatter filled the space. Adam looked up and saw the Galra Generals filing in. Zethrid was leading them- a look of barely concealed anger written on her face- while Garrison soldiers lined the Generals. It was a daily sight due to the Generals not trusting the Garrison to keep their word.

Zethrid made her way to where Adam was and pulled up a stool before sitting down with a huff. The Garrison soldiers stood near the walls and a few feet in front of Zethrid.

"Do we have to let them in? They're obnoxious," Zethrid said once a Garrison solider shut the glass door that separated Adam from the Generals.

"Do you want to deal with a war?" Adam asked as he turned back to his task, "Because this is the only way to avoid that."

Zethrid just growled. Adam tuned out the chatter of the Generals as they ate, focusing on his task. He moved slowly to prevent the piece from the halfway mark. He just needed to ensure Sam had enough time to figure out a plan to fix this- to get the Generals off of the planet.

"How do you know they won't?" Bandor asked.

"Won't what?"

"Start a war," Bandor said, "You've been working on that for four years yet you haven't even hit the halfway mark. How do you know they won't start a war because of that?"

Adam looked at Bandor. The boy looked nervous and when Adam glanced at the others, he saw the nervousness written on all of their faces. And he understood why they were nervous. Four years spent on a gift that's not even halfway done despite him working on it for hours everyday.

Adam looked at the Generals. He could hear their conversations but they couldn't hear him. It was something Sam demanded to be done, just as he had forced Admiral Sanda give Adam soldiers to protect him if he was going to be in a separate building. Which meant Adam could be truthful as the only people- besides Sam and Colleen- were already with him.

"They won't do anything because they know that with me at their side, it would kill Takashi," Adam said, "Besides, I haven't hit the halfway mark because I pull out a few threads before bed every once in a while."

"You what?" Zethrid growled, "They'll kill you if they learn that!"

Adam looked at her, "Are any of you planning on telling them- or anyone for that matter?"

"No but-"

"But nothing," Adam said, "They won't find out and so there's nothing to worry about."

He can still give Sam the time he needs. And if this won't hold up then Adam can come up with something new. He just needs to give Sam time- time to form a plan to fix all of this. He owes the man time- Sam deserves time.

Notes:

everytime I listen to 'The Challenge' I think of something like this and I might write a more fleshed out fic about this in the future

also I was gonna add some Adam/Sam and Luka/Ezor/Zethrid implications but decided against it

also also, let me know if I should add anything to the tags, I kinda don't know if anything else needs to be added or not
