Chapter Text
It happened on a sunny summer morning. Mrs. Scamander was up early as usual, having her breakfast tea before heading out to the hippogriff enclosures. Mr. Scamander and Theseus were still asleep, though Theseus would soon be up to get ready for work. And Newt, their precious baby Newt, would still be in bed, reveling in the opportunity to sleep in after his second year at Hogwarts.
Or at least, that was what Mrs. Scamander expected. Until a heartstopping wail of terror shattered the early morning calm.
“MUMMY!”
Mrs. Scamander had never apparated so fast.
Mr. Scamander and Theseus were not far behind.
After a chaotic morning full of terrified confused sobbing from two full grown men and one newly confirmed adolescent, a bewildered call to a doctor (who was soon sworn into silence), and a frantic search in the Scamander family records, Mrs. Scamander sat down with her precious baby Newt to explain what was going on. After firmly banning her other two boys from the library under threat of no more Newt cuddles for a week.
She had never expected to have this sort of conversation with her son. But he took it in stride.
“So…that means I can be a mummy like you?” Was his eventual reply. He looked delighted.
Mrs. Scamander laughed softly. “Yes, love. You can be a mummy or a daddy, depending on your future partner. Though I hope you wait until you are at least thirty, happily married, and ready to devote at minimum the next seventeen years of your life to raising your children before you become either. But Newt, if you want to be a mummy, that means you need to find someone else to be the daddy. Do you think you would be okay with that? With marrying a man?”
“I’ll be the daddy!” Theseus slammed open the door (“Didn’t I tell you to head to work, Theseus?”), bowling over Mr. Scamander as they gave up any pretense of not listening in.
“No Newt cuddles for a week unless you leave right now!”
“Noooooooooooooo….” Mr. Scamander whimpered and disappeared. Theseus twitched but stood firm. This was more important. He was ready to endure the unjust punishment.
“No one will ever touch my baby potato!”
“But Thee, I want to be a mummy!”
“You’re too young to be a mummy!”
“Mum already said I have to wait until I’m at least thirty and married.”
“I’ll never let that happen! No one will ever be good enough to marry my Newt!”
“Theseus…” Mrs. Scamander was dragging an elegant hand down her face. “We’ve discussed this.”
The Scamanders were not your typical pureblood family. Yet they still had some of the quirks of the same. Overprotective overemotional men was just one of the unique traits of the Scamander line. Theseus seemed to have inherited the strongest variant of that particular…curse. Though Mrs. Scamander couldn’t really blame him. Newt was an upsettingly adorable child.
While she was busy being exasperated, her oldest son had knelt before his little brother, down on one knee, and reverently cradled her younger son’s hands in his much larger own.
“Newt, I will gladly be the father for any of your babies. I swear to devote the rest of my life researching a way to help you become a mummy without having to…having to…” he couldn’t bear to say the rest.
“Thee, you suck at research. That’s why you’re training to become an auror.”
“I can change! Just please, don’t…don’t…” he still couldn’t say it.
“Theseus.” Mrs. Scamander used her strictest tone. “Get. Out.”
Once the ridiculous boy was ushered unhappily away, Mrs. Scamander turned to her precious baby boy with a sigh.
Her little boy was frowning, a look of concentration on his face.
“Mummy, do you think anyone would ever want to marry me?”
Mrs. Scamander had to hold back a scoff. Only every single person you’ve ever met. She spared a thought for her other son. She was glad that they weren’t that kind of pureblood family. Things would have been even more difficult to manage if that were the case.
“One day, my darling, you will find someone you will want to spend the rest of your life with. When that happens, you’ll know.”
“But what if they don’t want the same?”
“Oh my little love, you don’t have to worry about that.”
