Blood Under My Nails

Summary:

Simon doesn't know what happened, or how it happened. The last thing he remembers is the walls of the sub exploding inwards as the last remaining space filled with air around him was flooded with thick blood. He thrust the black box with the life jacket out with his hand, hoping, praying, that it would reach the surface and the COI would find it.

Everything went black.

And then he opened his eyes. The sub was intact, still partially flooded with blood, but it was floating all around him instead of settling at the bottom. Simon was in zero gravity.

or: Simon is saved by what he can only assume is an angel taking him to the other side

Chapter 1: Zero G

Chapter Text

Simon doesn't know what happened, or how it happened. The last thing he remembers is the walls of the sub exploding inwards as the last remaining space filled with air around him was flooded with thick blood. He thrust the black box with the life jacket out with his hand, hoping, praying, that it would reach the surface and the COI would find it.

Everything went black.

And then he opened his eyes. The sub was intact, still partially flooded with blood, but it was floating all around him instead of settling at the bottom. Simon was in zero gravity. "shit-" He pushed off a wall to reach the control panel, the indicators read all zero's. The shield on the window was still closed- maybe he was in space. but he couldn't open the shield to check because he knew the window was broken.

Simon growled under his breath, pain pulsing through his body from his left shoulder. He took the controls and tried to move the sub, but the numbers didn't change and not a single sound came from the engine.

"Fuck!" Simon slammed his fist as he cursed. Only to be startled by static break through the deafening silence around him. Simon spun around to face the radio, droplets of blood floating all around him, but he could see it, the small light on the radio flickering.

"Ava?" Simone pushed himself through the floating blobs of blood to grab near the radio, "Ava, do you read me? god damn it! are you alive?"

He was almost certain Ava's sub had been destroyed, but he thought the same about his own and here he was. so who knew. The static cut in and out, a muffled voice on the other side.

"Hello!?" Simon was about ready to pull his hair out, tears brimming in his eyes. he just wanted to live. "Jack!? pull me up damn it! what are you waiting for?"

"-he-llo? ca- hear me?"

Simon felt like a weight was lifted off his chest and he grinned. "yes- yes I can hear you!" he clung to the radio like the lifeline it was. "who is this?"

"I'm- save you- hold on-"

Simon's smile faltered, he didn't recognize this mans voice, but it was a man. So not Ava. then who?

"how?" Simon asked. maybe this was the alien fucking with his mind again. "what's your fucking plan to get me out of here- where even am I?"

he received static in response before the voice spoke again.

"-floating near- in orbit- I'm coming to you."

"what?" Simon breathed slightly. none of that made sense. He shook his head and pushed his soaking hair back, strands of it floating around his face in the zero g. "okay- I can't get out, I'm welded in… and I don't have a space suit." Simon looked around with wide eyes, this was bad. maybe good? he had no idea what was going on. maybe he was dead. maybe this wasn't a man at all, maybe it was an angel here to bring him to heaven.

"that's no good-" "we will pull you down- we'll- when we- sit tight-"

Simon growled and smacked the side of the radio slightly and checked the wire- it was still attached. "I- I can't really hear you that well, but- please hurry- I'm kinda bleeding out-" Simon looked down where his left arm should be and watched as more blood floated out from the injury into the space around him.

the angel spoke again to him.

"it'll just be a few minutes- idea- cutting- out soon-"

Simon was beyond frustrated with all of this, he hated not knowing and he'd had enough of it with this stupid exploration and Ava and all the lies. A loud clang against the side of the sub startled Simon, for the second time since waking back up.

"what was that?" Simon asked- but the angel didn't say anything. "hello? d- don't leave me- I I'm sorry, I- I just don't want to be alone- please say something."

but the only thing to come back was static. Simon tugged on his blood soaked hair with his hand and screamed into the silence of space. He was familiar with it, but he'd never enjoyed it.

knock knock

Simon looked around. that was definitely a knock. then it came again, two knocks. "hello?"

"hey- can you hear me better from here?" The Angel- they came back for him. "I've got you hooked up to our ship, were gonna cut you out, just sit tight." Simon held tightly to the wall as everything started to move. "first were going to bring back some gravity, hold onto something." Simon had no idea how they were going to do that, but he kept a firm hold to the wall as everything started to settle.

Simon watched in wonder as the blood all splashed down to the ground, leaving him standing with his feet firmly planted. Then he heard the start of a saw, grinding against the wall of the sub.

Simon had no idea what was waiting for him on the other side, if it was an actual angel or if this was some trick- he instinctively reached for the knife his mother gave him and when his fingers found nothing his heart skipped a beat. He'd used the strap to secure the life vest. it was gone.

Sparks started to fly inside the sub as the barrier was broken, the saw continuing to make large cuts to make an opening big enough to climb out of. The saw stopped and two loud bangs later the piece of wall flew inward, crashing against the opposite wall before splashing to the floor in the nearly waist high blood.

And there he was, the angel- wearing an orange space suit- despite the oxygen where he was and inside the sub. Simon didn't question it, he just needed out of this stupid thing. The Angel held out their hand to Simon, beckoning him to cross over.

"Let's get you out of here."

Simon pushed through the blood and took his hand with his own, letting himself be pulled through the opening into a dark tunnel. At the other end a light. this must be death.

The idea was… peaceful this time. he'd wanted to live, but there was no denying he was dead now. In the arms of an angel as his muscles started to give way, there was nothing he could do to stop it. This was his end.

"whoa, hey, stay with me-" the Angel spoke to him but his voice seemed far away. Simon's head felt heavy and his eyes rolled back into his head and everything went black once more.
