Work Text:
They and White has been dating for a while by now, and meanwhile Green won't say that their time passed wasn't good, they felt stuck. In the sense as if they were still in the initial phase of their relationship.
White destroyed the entire concept they had about romantic relationships, always assuming it was all about going on dates, quality time, learning more about the other, and being all caring towards one another the way you aren't with others. They came from a very affectionate family, and their town was lovely, so from a young age they thought that the day they was with someone it would be as clingy and domestic just like their parents were with each other, like taking breakfast to bed and that type of things.
Being with White wasn't like that.
Green isn't saying that White is cold or cruel at all, just a little... dense. When they agreed to formalize their relationship, it felt almost like they were doing business—White didn't even consider the possibility that they might get rejected. And while many viewed their self-confidence and boldness as arrogant or smug, Green didn't think the same.
Yes, they had the bad habit of saying everything they thought without worrying about the consequences, but they never really made fun of anyone; they were just... unused to these environments, and the way other people lived. But they never did anything with the intention of hurting people's feelings or disrespecting them—well, not on purpose.
When they tried to explain this, their friends said that they always look for the good side in everyone. But was that a bad thing?
What they are trying to say is that White, so disconnected from the world beyond their private yacht, doesn't seem to show affection in any way other than by giving expensive, generic, and not even personal or with meaning gifts. But the truth is that they don't really know each other that well yet, they do get together to eat at restaurants that Green couldn't afford even if they worked themself to death. But their conversations consist of listening to White ramble about anecdotes from a vacation they took or things that happened to them while filming for television, all while drinking whine.
It wasn't necessarily bad, but Green would like their relationship to be a little more than just this. That they could share things together and walk hand in hand, showing their affection in many more ways.
But even if they had the idea, that doesn't mean they are good at actually acting on it, and White didn't exactly help.
But if they want this to work, they can't let this shyness hold them back.
They will had to try.
”And by my twelfth birthday, I already had my own limousine and private chauffeur, so I no longer depended on my parents to take me places, it wa—”
Green listened vaguely to White's story, lost in their own thoughts. Right now they were in a luxury hotel, drinking wine together—well, more White to be honest—and listening to the other talk. White was complaining not so long ago at how 'plain' the rooms were, and Green felt like a royal right now.
Putting that aside, they need to interrupt the other, before it was too late and embarrassment got the better of them.
”Yeah, that's amazing.. umh, White, can I talk you about something?”
It took them by surprise, judging by their expression, but they quickly gave in. "Sure, if it doesn't take too long, I don't want to miss the buffet."
"I won't waste your time, I promise." They gently said. ”To begin with, w-well, I'm not trying to sound rude, I love everything you do for me, the gifts are a great touch—"
"Of course, my dear! I'm just doing my job. If you need anything, just tell me and you'll have it at your fingerti—”
"But I feel like it's not enough."
There was a moment of a hellish silence for Green, and White watched them perplexed, having already stopped swirling the wine in their glass.
”What?”
Panic gripped them. Did they sound ungrateful? The last thing they wanted was to anger the other.
“I-I mean, I like them, I really do,” they explained. “But we don’t spend much time together, and the few times we do it’s always the same conversations. D-Don’t you feel a little stuck?”
White's expression was terribly neutral, bordering on confused.
"I don't get it, what do you mean by stuck?"
They swallowed. ”Um, it's just in the time we've been dating, you've been very kind, but I don't think we're really communicating. Anyone would mistake us for casual friends, given how little we show affection for each other.”
That elicited a reaction from them, with a slightly irritated tone and moving their hands. "Little affection?! What are you talking about? I've given you thousands of gifts! And very expensive ones! I said I could get you anything! Why are you saying this?"
Green tried not to let negative emotions overwhelm them. ”White, there's more to a relationship than just material possessions; it's not just about spending money. It's about getting to know each other, building a bond of trust. And those things can't be bought with money, love don't work that way.”
White's shoulders slumped as they pondered their words. They seemed... lost, but they no longer looked angry, rather sad.
They stared silently at the ground for a few seconds until they spoke again with some haste and nervousness.
"B-But if that's not enough, what am I supposed to do? I don't understand what you want from me if it's not all those gifts. I thought I was being affectionate."
Green's gaze softened, and slowly reached across the table to place their hand affectionately over the other's. White seemed surprised but didn't let go—they viewed the grip as something from outer space. Weren't they used to this?
“I’m not asking you to understand it now,” they said kindly. "We can figure it out together slowly; you don't have to do it alone. I was just thinking that we should try new things, find other ways to show affection."
White seemed conflicted, Green wondered what was bothering them so much, but for now they wanted to give them their space, so they waited until the other spoke.
"...Okay," they finally said after a long silence. "We can try new things together, I guess."
Green felt like they were going to jump for joy, but before they could start squealing, White continued talking—looking out the bedroom window.
"Hey, it's a beautiful day outside, we could go for a walk."
...what?
“Huh?” this felt very out of place. White wasn’t the type to ’walk,’ but rather the type to take a limo to a store that was a 15-minute walk away. It was very strange that they would suggest something like this. “But your buffet..”
"Pff," they made a vague movement with their free hand. "If I wanted, I could bring a wheeled buffet over to us, don't worry about it."
That was an obvious exaggeration, but Green chose not to mention it.
“So…” White tried again, with their usual lack of self-confidence. “Do you want to go out?”
Green had to use a lot of willpower to not nod so hard that they could broke their neck.
Outside it was a truly beautiful day, and as they walked they chatted about many things regarding their lives and interests—White even asked them about their life before now and listened to them ramble about their fondness for worms!
It was a good date, and Green hopes they can have even more dates like this in the future.
Holding each other's hand as they walk—looking at White blushing face, they feels a sense of security that promises it will be so.
