3rd Pov:
It had been 4 months since Lilly had signed the papers and was now an official assassin. Lilly was now walking through the woods, away from her older brother rath. He had turned 18 and decided to kill Lilly because of a will. Lilly never fully understood, never stuck around long enough to be bothered. Lilly wore some simple black leggings, a black hoodie that hung just above her knees and some black sneakers. Her brown hair was braided, and she wore a black satchel.(She hadn’t fully explored her outfit options, and was still running on little money, and petty theft.) She looked like any normal 10 year old. If she was in the city many would assume she was maybe in the 4th grade, not a kid with a kill count of 3.
Ev was walking beside her. Her and Lilly had only known each other for a year, and were as close as sisters. Even though people couldn’t see Ev, she was less lonely with Lilly. For Lilly it was a gift to Ev by her side, and of course Salem, her familiar.
“So how long are we walking for this time?” Ev complained beside Lilly. Her red hair caught in the light between the tree lines.
“Until that bastard is far enough away” Lilly responded coldly. Even at 10, her words could be innocent or made of steel. Though Lilly never really talked to anyone besides Salem, Ev and Ryder, her assassin manager.
“He just never gives up though!” Ev continues, as Salem meows from slightly behind the two girls. “What is this, like his 4th attempt in 2 months?!” Ev continues.
“Fifth” Lilly mutters.
Dealing with her brother was a pain but became almost normal on these past months, it was like nostalgia in a really fucked up way.
“That guy really needs to give up,” Ev said, walking backwards, staring at the shorter girl. ”Like seriously, he has to get a hobby”
“One can dream,” Lilly said, a slight float in her voice.
Salem starred up at the two girls.
“You know I can’t kill him, that goes against my contract” Lilly said. Both her and Ev had a way of understanding Salem. Lilly because Salem was her familiar, and Ev because she was kind of binded to Lilly. “Plus, I don’t want to end up like him” Lilly said, saying ‘him’ with distaste.
After what felt like hours they finally made it to a clearing. A little further away they could see a house, it looked like a farm, there were a lot of people on that farm from what Lilly could see from the distance. That was bad.
“...Maybe it's best we turn back” Lilly said, turning to Ev and Salem.
“Yeah…probably” Ev said slowly as she started taking slow steps back.
Lilly followed and Salem moved in front of the two girls. But before Lilly could make a run for it, the adults started running towards her.
“Hey there. Are you lost?” Lilly looked up at the voice. It was a man. It was Steve Rogers. Aka Captain America. Aka Mister Capitalism himself. Shit. Lilly cursed in her head. Out of all the times I run into adults and it’s him.
“This piece of fucking egotistic shit” Ev said, her face was plastered with disgust. “His concern is as fake as his love life” Lilly had to resist making a face. That was a strange comparison
“Do you need help? Are you hurt?” Steve continued, crouching down to Lilly’s level. Lilly simply looked at him, blinking.
I either run for the hills and run into Ethan and die for the 3rd time, or deal with Avenger crap. Lilly thought to herself.
“Great, now more are coming!” Ev said, throwing her hand dramatically in the air.
“It's only one more” Lilly breathed out, her voice barely above a whisper.
“So she speaks,” Steve said with a smile. Lilly kept her face carefully neutral. But so badly wanted to punch him in the face.
“What's going on Cap?” Tony Stark asks as he walks over to where Steve is crouched.
“A kid came from the forest looking lost” Steve explained, his eyes not leaving Lilly’s, though not seeing how Lilly’s face scrunched up as he explained. Rude, im not lost, just…exploring. Lilly thought to say but didn’t.
Salem hissed, making both men turn to the small back cat in front of the girl. Salem had her tail held high and her teeth showing. Her purple eyes glaring at them.
“So the kid has a bodyguard” Tony said, clapping his hands “With really strange eyes” Tony said with confusion as he leaned closer to Salem. Salem swatted her paw in his direction. “I like the cat,” Tony said, nodding approvingly.
Lilly turned behind her and looked into the forest. Running would be so simple. She thought. Just have to make it far enough to teleport without them seeing. But why run? They aren’t the enemy…are they though? Were they just going to dump her with CPS, try to save her from something she can’t be saved from. Or worse, try to fix something that was shattered and she was still piecing herself. Her thoughts grew cold as she felt the shadows form. Consuming the forest. She closed her eyes and quickly took a breath out and the shadows disappeared when she opened her eyes.
Ev looked at her friend, worried. Even though only Lilly saw the darkness, Evelyn knew when Lilly saw it.
Lilly turned back to the two avengers in front of her, giving Ev a quick look from the side. A reassurance that she was fine, or at least going to be.
“You got someone with you? Some adult preferably?" Tony said, looking around. He saw Lilly turn back hoping this kid wasn’t alone and some parent was going to come out running. But no one did. “Right so how about you come with us,” Tony finally said motioning to him and Steve. “Back to that house right there and we call for help, or something” He continued pointing to the farm house.
Lilly looked past them already seeing a woman walking up. “You guys okay? You’ve been there for a few minutes looking at the goun-” The woman, Natasha Romanoff Lilly’s mind helpfully supplied, stopped talking as her eyes landed on Lilly. Her green eyes already assessing. “Whose kid is this?” Natasha flatly asked.
“And now there is an attractive red head! Great! Just wonderful!” Ev flopped down on the grass dramatically before standing up again quickly. “That's Black Widow, Lilly. Assassin, Lilly. She is going to figure you out so fast, we’re going to go to Juvie.” Ev exclaimed. Lilly bit back a laugh listening to Ev.
“Find anything funny?” Natasha said with amusement, making slight eyes contact with Lilly. Lilly held her tongue so she wouldn’t say anything she would regret.
“Maybe she can’t talk?” Tony suggested looking at his teammates.
“I heard her say something earlier” Steve said standing up “We should still help find her parents” Then he looked at Lilly directly “If she has any” At that Lilly’s eyes darkened. Do you need help? Steve signed. Lilly knew sign language very well. Lilly just stared. No movement in her face.
“Where are your parents?” Natasha asked, assessing the girl, looking for any hint of…anything.
“Wouldn’t you like to know,” Lilly said before she could stop herself. Lilly didn’t regret her words, just the timing.
“You can be smart sometimes, this is not one of those times” Ev said with mock fondness.
Natasha’s face stayed neutral, Steve looked concerned, even more than he was before, and Tony, he looked proud.
“We aren’t the enemy,” Steve said, his hands raised.
“No, but you’re full of shit” Ev sassed, while Lilly simply rolled her eyes.
I wish they could hear you. Lilly thought to herself. This is the most entertainment I’ve had in a while.
All of a sudden someone yelled from the farmhouse and the three adults' heads turned towards the sound. Lilly used the opportunity and ran. Salem jumped into a small blue rimed portal.
“Hey!” Lilly heard behind her, but she had already made it far behind the treeline, and teleported into the shadows. By the time the three avengers followed no one was there.
“What the Hell?” Tony breathed out, looking around. But no trace of the girl could be seen.
