Chapter 1: Introducing

Chapter Text

Light…

will always shine on the geniuses or the ones who are more special than others.

It will never shine on the losers.

Our world only has space for the geniuses.

What about the ordinary ones?”

“Hello.”

The greeting echoed through the silent classroom. A girl stood at the front of the class, a polite smile on her face, hands clasped neatly in front of her, and hair shifting as she softly inclined her head.

“My name is Nanno.”

The eyes of 25 students stared blankly ahead at the introduction. In less than a month, the school year would be over, and they would be on break, and yet -

“It’s nice to meet you.”

-There she stood. A new student is introducing herself. A collective confusion settled over the class, bringing a palpable awkwardness.

“Thank you for that introduction. You may take your seat.”

The class watched as she bowed slightly and made her way down the rows, settling into her seat with an almost careless attitude. And the feeling in the classroom shifted from confusion and disbelief to a predatory kind of curiosity, one that came only with a new type of player in the game, the thrill of a rare type of choice - a new predator or a new prey.

She moved gracefully with measured steps towards her desk. Towards him.

Izuku Midoriya blinked as he realized and shrank deeper into his seat, trying his hardest not to stare.

She was moving towards him; the only empty desk in the class was right next to his, and of course, that was where she was going to sit. Of course, the new girl was going to sit next to him and bring all sorts of unwanted attention to him because, naturally, in trying to get to her, they’d have to pass him, and when they’d crowd around her, he’d get crushed, maybe even kicked out of his seat, so someone could have a better vantage point.

His heart beat in a mixture of excitement and fear.

Logically, it made sense that she would sit next to him. There was always a chance, a one-in-a-million chance, that he might finally be able to make a friend, but in time, she would obviously come to hate him just as everyone else did, naturally. Only right now, she didn’t know he was a quirkless loser, but she would, and he would be right back where he started.

He looks warily to the side.

But at that moment, as she sat down, she turned her head towards him and smiled.
