the version that stayed

Summary:

They get another version of the story.
Only Louis knows what they lost but they try a different ending anyway.

or: what if Zayn and Louis get a chance to go back to 2015, would they do anything different?

Notes:

hey there again!
so I had this idea, that could very well be the weirdest one I've ever had but I was playing around with it and ended up writing something and I actually kinda liked how it turned out, so I decided to share it with you.
it's basically a time travel fic, featuring a very oblivious Liam, a very confusing Zayn and Zouis finding their way back to being friends in a weird way.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: someone else's life

Chapter Text

2015

Zayn wakes up before the alarm.

That's the first thing that feels off.

Not the walking itself — he's always been a light sleeper. But the way it happens, abrupt and clean. Like he's been pulled out of something instead of drifting out of sleep. His chest rises too fast, breath catching halfway in, like he’s expecting...

Something.

Someone.

He keeps his eyes closed for a second longer, chasing it.

There’s a shape of a memory there, soft at the edges. Warm sheets. A different room. The faint, lingering smell of smoke clinging to cotton. An arm thrown lazily over his waist, heavy and familiar.

Zayn frowns.

That’s… not right.

He opens his eyes.

The ceiling is wrong.

Not wrong in a way he can explain. It’s just a ceiling, white, flat, exactly where it should be, but it doesn’t match the one in his head. This one is too high, too empty. There’s no crack running down the corner, no faint shadow from a lamp that never quite sat straight.

He lies there, staring at it, waiting for the rest of the room to make sense.

It doesn’t.

The silence presses in first. No distant traffic. No muffled radio from another room. No early morning movement that says someone else is already awake.

He turns his head.

The bed is too big.

Too cold.

Empty.

Zayn pushes himself up slowly, like moving too fast might break something further. His heart hasn’t settled yet. It’s still beating like he’s late, like he’s missed something important, like someone’s expecting him somewhere else.

The thought hits him suddenly, sharp and certain: He’s not supposed to be here.

It doesn’t come with panic.

Not yet.

Just a quiet, unsettling clarity that settles in his chest.

He swings his legs over the side of the bed. The floor is colder than he expects.

The room comes into focus in pieces. Achair with clothes thrown over it, a suitcase half-zipped in the corner, a phone buzzing faintly on the bedside table.

That makes him pause.

The sound feels… out of place. Too loud in the stillness.

He reaches for it anyway.

The screen lights up under his touch, notifications stacked one after the other.

Messages.

Missed calls.

Names he recognizes instantly, even if something about them feels distant, like reading about people he used to know.

His thumb hovers.

There’s a photo on the lockscreen. He doesn’t remember setting it.

It’s him — he knows that much — but it takes his brain a second too long to catch up with the rest of it. The angle, the lighting, the expression on his own face.

And next to him...

Zayn’s breath stutters.

No.

Not next to him.

Not who he expects.

There’s no trace of soot-smudged skin, no tired smile softened by long shifts, no familiar weight leaning into him like it belongs there.

Just...

Something else.

Someone else.

A life that looks polished and distant and completely, utterly unfamiliar.

A cold feeling settles in his stomach.

He locks the phone without opening anything.

For a long moment, he just sits there on the edge of the bed, staring at nothing, trying to force the two versions of his life to line up.

They don’t.

One of them has to be wrong.

And the worst part, the part he can’t seem to shake, no matter how hard he tries to reason through it, is that the one he’s in feels like the lie.

He doesn’t move for a while after that.

The room feels staged, like something put together for him to walk into. Every object is slightly too deliberate. The suitcase, the clothes, the phone, like props in a life he doesn’t remember choosing.

Zayn presses the heels of his hands into his eyes until he sees sparks.

“Okay.” He mutters, voice rough with sleep and something else he doesn’t want to name. “Okay.”

Think.

People don’t just wake up in the wrong life.

There’s an explanation.

There’s always an explanation.

He drags a hand down his face and stands, the motion automatic, muscle memory carrying him forward even when his mind lags behind. The floor creaks faintly under his weight. That, at least, feels normal.

Grounding.

The bathroom is through a door to the left. He knows that without thinking, and the realization lands strangely — like his body belongs here even if the rest of him doesn’t.

The mirror doesn’t help.

It’s him. Obviously. Same face, same dark hair, sleep-creased skin. But even that feels… off. Not different. Just disconnected, like looking at a version of himself he hasn’t caught up to yet.

Zayn grips the edge of the sink.

“Get a grip.” He says under his breath.

He turns on the tap, lets the cold water run over his fingers, then splashes his face once, twice. The shock of it clears something, just enough for him to breathe properly again.

This is real.

Or it feels real enough that it doesn’t matter.

There’s just that same empty gap where something important should be.

This isn’t just wrong.

This is someone else’s life.

He dresses without thinking too much about it. Black jeans, a shirt pulled from the chair, a jacket he doesn’t remember owning but fits him like it’s always been his. Every movement feels rehearsed, like he’s stepping into a routine he’s performed a hundred times before, just not this version of himself.

The phone buzzes again on the bedside table.

He hesitates.

Then picks it up.

This time, he unlocks it.

Messages flood the screen immediately.

Group chats.

Names.

Notifications stacked on top of each other like they’ve been waiting for him to catch up.

Niall: where are you mate

Louis: don’t be late for once in your life

Harry: call me when you’re up x

Liam: you awake?

Zayn’s breath catches on that last one.

Liam.

Something in his chest tightens, sharp and sudden.

For a second, just a second, it almost lines up. The name, the feeling, the echo of something warm and familiar that settles low in his ribs.

But when he tries to reach for it, it slips.

Wrong Liam.

The thought comes uninvited, immediate and certain.

He doesn’t know how he knows that. He just does.

Still, his thumb hovers over the message.

You awake?

There’s nothing unusual about it. It’s casual. Normal.

It shouldn’t make his pulse spike the way it does.

Zayn types before he can overthink it.

yeah

The reply comes almost instantly.

Liam: good. we’re downstairs, management’s already losing it

Downstairs.

Management.

Zayn exhales slowly, staring at the screen.

Right.

Of course.

Pieces start clicking into place now, not because he remembers them, but because they’re being handed to him whether he wants them or not.

The suitcase. The schedule. The messages.

The life.

He knows what this is.

Or at least, he knows what it’s supposed to be.

The realization settles heavy in his chest, unfamiliar and yet impossible to ignore.

Fame.

The band.

All of it.

Zayn lets out a quiet, humorless laugh.

“Yeah.” He murmurs to himself. “No. Definitely not mine.”

And yet...

His hand tightens around the phone.

He can’t just walk out. Not yet. Not without understanding what he’s stepping into or why it feels so wrong when everything around him insists it isn’t.

So he moves.

Out of the room. Down the hallway. Each step steadier than the last, even as that underlying unease hums quietly beneath his skin.

Voices reach him before he sees them.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

And still not enough.

Zayn slows just before turning the corner.

There’s a strange, fleeting moment where he considers leaving. Just—walking the other way, out of the building, out of this version of his life before it has the chance to close in around him.

But then...

A laugh.

Soft, bright, unmistakable.

It hits him like something physical.

Zayn stills.

His breath catches again, sharper this time, like his body recognizes the sound before his mind can catch up.

For a split second, everything in him leans toward it.

Home.

The word flashes through him, uninvited and overwhelming.

And just as quickly...

Wrong.

The correction follows, just as strong.

Zayn swallows.

Then, before he can second-guess himself, he turns the corner.

And sees him.

Liam is exactly where the sound said he’d be.

Leaning back against the wall, phone in hand, mid-conversation with Niall, like nothing in the world is out of place.

Like this is just another morning.

Another day that starts the same way all the others do.

He looks...

Zayn’s chest tightens.

He looks right.

And completely wrong at the same time.

There’s no soot on his skin. No tired slump in his shoulders from a long shift. No quiet heaviness behind his eyes.

This Liam stands straight, clean, put-together in a way that feels almost too sharp around the edges.

Polished.

Brighter.

Lighter.

A stranger wearing a familiar face.

Zayn doesn’t realize he’s stopped walking until Liam looks up.

Their eyes meet, and something shifts.

It’s small. Quick enough that anyone else would miss it. But Zayn feels it, unmistakably, the way Liam’s expression flickers, like something in him stutters out of rhythm for half a second.

“—there he is.” Niall is saying, but his voice fades into the background.

Liam is still looking at him. Not confused. Not concerned. Just… focused.

Like he’s trying to place something he can’t quite name.

Zayn’s heartbeat picks up, uneven and too loud in his ears.

This is the part where something is supposed to click.

Recognition.

Relief.

Something.

Instead, all he feels is that same dissonance, stretched tighter now that it’s right in front of him.

He knows this face. He knows the shape of that mouth, the way his eyes crease slightly when he smiles...

But the smile Liam gives him now doesn’t land the same.

“Finally decided to join us.” Liam says.

It sounds easy, familiar. The tone is right. The cadence is right.

Everything is right.

And still...

Zayn forces himself to move the rest of the way toward them, each step deliberate.

“Yeah.” He says, because that seems like the kind of answer that fits here. “Was up.”

It sounds wrong to his own ears.

Too flat. Too careful.

Liam notices.Of course he does.

His brow furrows slightly, just for a second. “You alright?”

And there it is.

Concern.

Real, immediate, and directed entirely at him.

Zayn’s chest aches with it.

Because this part... This part feels exactly the same.

And that’s what makes it worse.

“Fine.” Zayn says quickly. Too quickly. “Just tired.”

Liam doesn’t look convinced. He pushes off the wall, stepping closer without hesitation, like it’s the most natural thing in the world to close that space between them.

Zayn goes still. There’s a moment — brief, almost nothing — where Liam’s hand lifts slightly, like he’s about to...Touch him.

The instinct is so familiar it hits before the action does.

Zayn’s breath catches because he knows this.

He knows the weight of that hand, the way it settles, grounding and warm and his...

Liam’s hand drops back to his side instead, and the moment passes.

Fast.

Too fast.

Like it never happened at all.

“Long night?” Liam asks instead, casual, like he didn’t just almost reach for him.

Zayn stares at him as something twists low in his chest, sharp enough to make him feel off-balance. Because he felt that.

The almost-touch.

The hesitation.

Like something in Liam pulled him forward and then stopped him just as quickly.

Like he didn’t even realize he’d almost done it.

Zayn swallows. “Something like that.”

Liam studies him for another second and then nods, slow.

“Alright.” He adds. “Well...come on. We’re already late.”

He turns, falling back into step with the others like nothing unusual just happened.

Like Zayn didn’t just have the ground shift under his feet.

Zayn lingers for half a second longer. Watching him. Trying to reconcile the man in front of him with the one in his head.

It doesn’t work.

It still doesn’t work.

And yet his chest hasn’t settled.

If anything, it’s worse now.

Because whatever this is... This pull. This recognition that doesn’t quite land but refuses to go away... It’s not one-sided.

Zayn exhales slowly.

Then follows.

The day moves without asking him if he’s ready for it.That’s what unsettles Zayn the most.

No one pauses. No one looks twice. Everything flows around him like he’s already part of it, like he’s been living this exact routine for years and just… forgot to notice.

Cars. Security. Management talking too fast about schedules and timing and appearances.

He follows when he’s expected to follow. Stops when everyone else stops. Nods when someone looks at him like they’re waiting for a response.

It’s disturbingly easy.

Like his body knows the choreography even if his mind is somewhere else entirely.

They end up in a studio.

That, at least, makes something in him settle — not fully, not comfortably, but enough that the tightness in his chest loosens by a fraction. There’s something familiar about the space. The quiet hum of equipment. The way sound feels contained here, controlled.

Safe, in a way he can’t explain.

“Alright, from the top.” Someone says.

Zayn barely registers who.

Music starts and it happens.

He steps into it without thinking.

The lyrics come easily. The melody sits exactly where it should in his chest, like it’s always belonged there. His voice follows a path it clearly knows by heart, rising and falling in ways that feel practiced, precise.

For a moment — a brief, almost convincing moment — everything aligns.

This.

This he understands.

But when he glances to the side, Liam a few feet away, mic in hand, focused in that quiet, intense way that pulls all his attention inward — +here’s a crease between his brows, familiar in a way that hits too close to something Zayn can’t quite reach, it fractures.

Not the performance. Not the sound.

Zayn.

Because the image in front of him doesn’t match the one in his head.

In his memory Liam looks like this, but softer. Edges worn down by long days and longer nights. There’s always a trace of exhaustion in him, but it’s… grounded. Real. Earned.

Here, he looks almost untouched.

Like none of that has happened. Like it never will.

Zayn misses a line.

It’s small. Barely noticeable.

But Liam notices.

Of course he does.

His head turns slightly, eyes flicking toward Zayn mid-verse, just for a second.

Concern again. Always concern.

Zayn forces himself back in, catches the next line, keeps going like nothing happened.

But the crack is there now and it doesn’t close.

By the time they break, Zayn feels like he’s been split in two.

One version of him moves through the motions — drinks water, leans back against the wall, listens to someone talk about adjustments and timing.

The other is somewhere else entirely.

In a different room. A smaller one. Warm.

There’s a jacket thrown over a chair that smells faintly like smoke. A kettle whistling softly in the background. Liam — his Liam — standing too close, bumping their shoulders together like he can’t help it.

Zayn blinks and the studio snaps back into focus.

Too bright. Too loud.Too wrong.

“You sure you’re good?”

The voice is closer this time.

Zayn turns and Liam is right there.

Not across the room. Not a few feet away.

Right there.

Close enough that Zayn can see the details — the exact shade of his eyes, the way his hair falls slightly out of place, the faint flush in his cheeks from singing.

Close enough that it feels dangerous.

“I said I’m fine.” Zayn replies, sharper than he means to.

Liam doesn’t flinch. If anything, he leans in slightly, like resistance only pulls him closer.

“That didn’t look fine.” He says, quieter now. Not for anyone else. Just for him.

Zayn’s grip tightens around the water bottle in his hand.

There it is again. That pull. That unbearable familiarity sitting underneath everything, even when nothing lines up the way it should.

“Just tired.” Zayn says, forcing the words out more evenly this time.

Liam watches him. Like he’s trying to read something written just under the surface.

Zayn looks away first.

He can’t...he can’t do that. Not right now. Not when everything already feels like it’s slipping.

There’s a pause. “Alright.” Liam says eventually. But it sounds different this time.

Less convinced. More… careful.

Zayn nods, even though Liam isn’t looking for confirmation anymore.

The conversation should end there. It almost does.

“You didn’t answer me earlier.”

Zayn stills for a moment.

Slowly, he looks back at him. “What?”

Liam shifts his weight, just slightly. “This morning.” His gaze flicks to Zayn’s face, searching. “You said you were up.” He continues. “But you sounded...”He hesitates, like he doesn’t quite have the words for it. “Off.” He settles on.

Zayn’s stomach twists.Of course he noticed that too.

“Didn’t sleep well.” Zayn says, defaulting to the easiest explanation.

It sounds thin, even to him.

Liam doesn’t call him out on it. — that almost makes it worse. Instead, he nods slowly, like he’s choosing not to push.

“Okay.” He says, but he doesn’t move away.

And for a second, neither does Zayn.

They just stand there.

Too close.

Caught in something neither of them is naming.

Zayn’s gaze drops, just briefly to Liam’s hands.

Empty.

Still.

Not reaching for him.

Something in his chest aches, sudden and sharp.

Because they should be. He knows they should be. He can feel it, like muscle memory with nowhere to go.

Zayn steps back.

It’s small, but it’s enough to break whatever that moment was trying to become.

“I’m gonna get some air.” He says, already turning before Liam can respond.

He doesn’t wait for permission. Or questions.

Just walks.

Out of the studio. Down the hallway. Past people who call his name and don’t get an answer.

The air outside hits him cold and sharp, dragging a breath out of him that feels like the first real one he’s taken all day.

Zayn leans against the wall, tipping his head back.

This isn’t working.

He can’t... He can’t keep doing this. Pretending this life fits when every instinct in him is screaming that it doesn’t. That he’s in the wrong place. With the wrong version of...

Zayn squeezes his eyes shut but the image comes anyway.

Liam. But not this Liam.

The other one. The one who knows him. The one who would’ve followed him out without asking, would’ve stood too close, would’ve...

“Zayn.”

His eyes snap open. Of course. Of course he did.

Liam stands a few feet away, breath slightly uneven like he came after him without thinking it through.

For a second, neither of them speaks. Then Liam steps closer. Slow. Careful. Like approaching something that might bolt.

“You wanna tell me what’s going on?” He asks.

And there’s something in his voice now, not just concern but Pomething deeper. Heavier. Something personal.

Zayn stares at him. Stares at this version of him that feels so close and so completely out of reach at the same time and hiis throat tightens.

Because the truth...The truth would sound insane.

I don’t think this is my life.

I think I loved you somewhere else.

I think you were different. I think we were...

Zayn exhales shakily instead “I just...” He starts.

Stops.

Shakes his head.

Liam waits.

Of course he does.

Always does.

Zayn laughs under his breath, but there’s no humor in it.

“This is gonna sound mad.” He admits.

Liam’s expression doesn’t change. “Try me.”

Zayn looks at him for a long moment, like he’s searching for something that might still be there. Something that might match.

It doesn’t.

Not quite.

But it’s close enough to hurt.

“I think,” Zayn says slowly, the words unfamiliar even as he speaks them, “I’m in the wrong place.”

The silence that follows is immediate.

Heavy.

Liam’s brow furrows slightly. “What do you mean?”

Zayn swallows.

There’s no easy way to say it. No version of this that doesn’t sound completely unhinged. But the words come anyway. Like they’ve been sitting there all day, waiting.

“I mean,” He says, quieter now, “this...” he gestures vaguely, the building, the world, everything around them “...doesn’t feel like mine.”

Liam stares at him. Trying to make sense of it.

Zayn can see the exact moment where logic and instinct collide behind his eyes.

“You’re just overwhelmed.” Liam says finally, careful, measured. “We’ve been going non-stop, it messes with your head...”

“No.” Zayn cuts in. Too fast. Too certain.

Liam goes still.

Zayn’s chest rises and falls unevenly.

“It’s not that.” He starts again. “It’s...”

He stops again. Because how does he explain a life that only exists in his head? How does he explain missing someone who’s standing right in front of him?

Zayn looks away. Runs a hand through his hair.

“This isn’t...” He tries one more time, softer now. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.”

The words hang there.

Fragile.

Dangerous.

Liam doesn’t answer right away.

When Zayn finally looks back at him something in Liam’s expression has shifted.

Not understanding. Not agreement. But not dismissal, either.

Something else.Something quieter.

“Then how is it supposed to be?” Liam asks.

And that... That almost breaks him.

Because Zayn knows. He knows exactly how it’s supposed to beHe can see it, clear as anything.

He can eel it.

The life. The space between them. The way Liam fits into it like he was always meant to be there.

Zayn’s throat tightens.

“You wouldn’t believe me.” He says.

Liam’s gaze doesn’t waver.

“Try me.” He repeats, softer this time.

Zayn lets out a shaky breath.

For a second he almost does. Almost tells him everythingBut then he looks at him again.

Really looks.

And all he sees is a version of Liam who doesn’t know him.

Not the way that matters. Not the way that counts.

Zayn shakes his head. “I can’t.”

Liam exhales slowly and nods once.

Not pushing. Not asking again. But he doesn’t leave.

He stays right where he is.

Close.

Steady.

Real.

And somehow that makes everything worse. Because for the first time since waking up, Zayn understands something clearly.

This isn’t going to fix itself. This feeling... This wrongness... It’s not going anywhere.

And if he stays... If he keeps trying to force himself into a life that doesn’t fit... It’s only going to get worse.

Zayn looks at Liam one last time.

At the almost-familiar lines of his face. At the space between them that feels both too small and impossibly wide.

And something in him settles.

Not comfortably.But decisively.

He can’t stay here.

Not like this.

“Yeah.” Zayn says quietly, more to himself than anything else.

Liam frowns slightly. “Yeah what?”

Zayn steps back. Just a fraction. But this time, it’s intentional.

“I just need some time.” He says.

It’s not a lie. It’s just not the whole truth.

Liam studies him for a long moment.

Then nods. “Alright.” He says. “But don’t disappear, yeah?”

The words land heavier than they should.

Zayn’s chest tightens.

Don’t disappear.

He forces a small nod.

“Yeah.” He echoes.

But even as he says it...He knows.

That’s exactly what he’s going to do.
